Fixes #15611. Also reported in #15717. Replaces #15612.

Problem and change

A queued message can send its original text while you are editing it. This PR holds that message until Save or Cancel. Save sends the revised text; Cancel keeps the original. The active response continues normally.

The hold preserves queue order and independent Stop, restart, and failure pauses. Web, desktop, and mobile share the commands. Editors track ownership so a stale client cannot overwrite another edit, and unsaved drafts remain recoverable.

Original recordings

These show the original bug and earlier fix, not verification of the November 1 integration.

Andrew tested this earlier Android build and reported that it worked. A separate before-fix Android recording and current-build close/reopen verification are still outstanding.

November 1 integration

Updated against main at 23075af981, preserving the contributor history. Resolved the web, mobile, shared-client, and server conflicts. Reused main's sequence tracking and kept its attachment-only prompt handling, child-agent approval UI, and unattended queue recovery.

Current local verification:

  • 220 focused tests passed: web queue/editor/draft tests (26), mobile draft/edit/permission tests (99), server edit holds (9), and shared commands/ownership/execution tests (86).
  • 21 React compiler cases passed across the changed web and mobile files.
  • Shared-client, web, mobile, and server typechecks passed. Changed-source lint and formatting passed.
  • check:changed passed dependency-patch, formatting, both unused-code, and GraphQL checks. Its first typecheck found automatic-merge duplicates; those were corrected and the affected typechecks rerun successfully. The broad test step was interrupted; the focused results above are separate runs, not a claim that the entire command passed.

Current-head CI must still complete. No new APK or manual native runtime verification is claimed. T3's Browser and Device verification tools are unavailable in this session.

Scope and attribution

This retains Julius's composer-chat-19 rebuild and the existing contributor history. Credit to @Andrew-Forster for the original implementation, @GLDRoger for failure-pause and reordered-queue analysis, and @juliusmarminge for the ownership and recovery rebuild.

The server advertises an additive capability so older hosts remain connectable, but those hosts do not provide the durable hold. Attachment restoration and recovery are part of preserving the edited message, not separate features.

Earlier rebuild verification and evidence

Previous rebuild verification

  • Before implementation, eight server hold cases and two client ownership/presentation regressions failed against the base. The rebuilt head passes 716 tests in 15 focused suites. The first final run passed 714 cases and timed out on two workspace-launch tests during severe machine contention; both passed in a focused rerun. Coverage includes the existing runtimeLayer, ProjectionStore, commands, threads-sync, threadExecution, web queuedMessageEdit/composerDraftStore/composerContextRecords, native queued-run-edit/use-composer-drafts/attachmentUpload/composerContext, and ServerEnvironment/ThreadLaunchService/ThreadStop suites.
  • Scoped web, mobile, server, client-runtime, contracts and shared typechecks passed after integration; affected scopes were rechecked after the attachment fix. Changed-source lint has no errors. No repository-wide checks were run locally.
  • Independent full-diff reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol. Rounds 1–4 found ownership, compatibility, Resume, stale-draft, attachment integrity and asynchronous cleanup issues; those were fixed. Round 5: both reviewers found no code blockers. Two optional recovery UX nits remain: undoing a removal can retain an otherwise unchanged draft, and a failure toast does not name the visible recovery location. On the published head, Native fingerprint diff, PR Vouch and PR Size checks passed; the label-definition sync was skipped. CodeRabbit reports β€œReview skipped: draft pull request.” No full CI run or current-head configured code review has reported, so those remain gates.
  • Live isolated Linux web/server: Save/Cancel, takeover confirmation, recovery beside an occupied main draft, navigation and page reload, persisted ownership across an actual server restart, holding two queued successors after interrupting a preparing run, and Resume preserving the edit hold. Normal UI image/file upload, text-only edit, removal, reload and Save produced bound references or no references as appropriate. A text-only edit reused the original image ID with no image data in the command. Failed attachment restoration plus an actual isolated server stop retained ownership across restart and page reload; Save refused incomplete content and Cancel released the hold while keeping the server attachment. A delayed image fetch failed after the user typed while the server stayed online; successful cleanup retained that text beside the unchanged main draft. Clearing the retained draft removed its chip. A simulated missing persisted image triggered a visible refusal while retaining the server image and edit token; the browser's actual storage quota was not filled.
  • Fixtures used normal server commands and disposable state; no provider was started. Natural provider completion/failure races were covered by deterministic runtime tests, not a live provider run. Capability negotiation was test-verified; no live mixed-version, relay or tunnel pair was exercised.

Web evidence

Same disposable message and 1280Γ—800 viewport. Appearance is similar; the behavioral proof is the persisted server hold and lifecycle checks above.

Before (main): Before: local queue editor

After (rebuilt head): After: queue editor backed by a durable hold

Save and Cancel recording

Simulated missing persisted image: Save refuses and retains the server attachment: Missing attachment guard

Recovered text typed during a failed image load, beside the main draft: Recovered text after failed attachment restoration

Remaining review

Still draft, as requested by Julius, pending current native evidence and human review. The original videos above do not replace testing the rebuilt mobile Save/Cancel, close/reopen, takeover, and attachment-recovery flows.

Models used in the earlier rebuild: GPT-6 Astra (tests), GPT-6.1 Sol (implementation), Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol (review). Earlier harnesses: T3 Code through Codex and Claude Agent. November 1 maintenance: OpenAI Codex desktop harness; exact model identifier unavailable.

This new projection-load error mapping discards the underlying failure, losing its cause and stack. Please preserve the immediate error when wrapping it:

Fixed in 80f07caaf. The edit-state projection wrapper now keeps the immediate failure as cause.

🟠 High orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts:1305

A queued message being edited starts automatically after the active run fails with a non-validation provider error or ends before its worktree is created, instead of pausing for the user. This return runs before the terminal-run pause checks, and Save or Cancel later calls startNextQueuedRun without failedRunId or endedRunId; apply those pause checks before returning for queueEditId.

Confirmed and fixed in 80f07caaf. Terminal-run pause checks now run before the edit-hold return. Four regressions cover Save and Cancel after a provider error or an interrupted worktree preparation. They wait for the persisted queue-hold event and verify that both queued messages remain paused after the edit ends. Restoring the old ordering made both Save regressions fail waiting for that missing event. All 20 focused server/mobile tests pass, including after integrating the concurrent main update in c01455864.

Confirmed and fixed in 80f07caaf. The shared row controls now disable steering when queueEditId is present, including the long-press menu. The action handler checks it too. Mobile typecheck and the existing queue-control tests passed; native mobile interaction was not rerun.

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The native mobile edit, Save and Cancel flow changed, but the PR explicitly leaves it manually unverified. Please add before/after mobile evidence and a short recording showing an edit held through turn completion, then Save or Cancel, as required by the verification guide. Keep this in draft until that evidence is added.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable β€” This PR introduces a cross-platform queued-message editing workflow with persisted server holds, new commands, event-sequence coordination, and changes to queue scheduling and presentation. Its broad runtime impact and an unresolved queue-lifecycle risk require human review.

Thanks for working on this. It fixes a bug I hit too. I reviewed the current head (40cefcdca) and found a few things. The server-side hold is the right approach, so these are refinements, not a redesign.

Fixed in a follow-up PR into your branch: Andrew-Forster/t3code#1

  1. Save/Cancel can bypass a failed-run pause (Orchestrator.ts ~11217 and ~11075). Both call startNextQueuedRun(threadId) without the failed or ended run ID, but the provider-failure and missing-worktree checks only run when those IDs are passed. If the active run fails while a message is edit-held, and Save lands before the terminal listener records queueHeld, the edited message starts against the failing provider or outside its worktree. The current regressions wait for the hold event before saving, so they don't cover this order.
  2. Reordering around an edit hold doesn't restart the queue. With A edit-held at the head and the turn finished, moving B ahead of A leaves B queued. Reorder never triggers a start check, and queueHeld is false, so there's no Resume either.

The follow-up derives start eligibility from the latest run's durable state and re-checks the queue after a reorder. 52 focused tests pass, and reverting the production change makes 8 of them fail.

Open questions (not changed)

  1. A second device silently discards an in-progress edit. Edit auto-fills previousEditId from the projected token (ChatView.tsx ~4715, mobile use-thread-composer-state.ts ~450), so opening the same message on another device takes the hold without confirmation. If the first device's composer already has a draft, its unsaved edit is deleted. Would it be worth keeping the displaced draft, or asking before taking over?
  2. Version skew. Clients always send queued-run.edit.begin, but pre-PR servers don't recognize it and both report orchestration protocol 2. A new client on an older host would fail to open the editor. Is gating this on a capability intended, or is that pairing acceptable?

Model: GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5. Harness: T3 Code.

Walkthrough

Queued-message editing now uses server-held edit IDs. The server prevents edited runs from starting or being promoted to steering. Web and mobile clients begin, save, and cancel edits while tracking edit ownership.

Explanation

Issue #15611 requires a queued message to wait for Save or Cancel when the active turn completes. The server records an edit hold, blocks dispatch and steering, and resumes queue evaluation after Save or Cancel. The client sends and verifies the edit ID, preserves the draft, and handles lost ownership. Regression tests cover turn completion, revised Save text, original Cancel text, queue order, pause preservation, reordering, failure timing, and editor reopening.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #15611. Server commands, shared client-runtime state, web and mobile editor handling, projection updates, protocol compatibility changes, documentation, and tests support the edit hold, Save or Cancel behavior, queue state, stale-editor protection, or deployment compatibility. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, scope, verification results, limitations, linked issues, and remaining evidence. It combines the Problem and Change sections and does not use a distinct Verification heading, but the required information is present and detailed.

Bump the orchestration protocol version for the new wire commands.

queued-run.edit.begin is absent from the pre-PR OrchestrationV2Command schema, so that server rejects the new dispatch payload. The protocol remains version 2, and the client accepts the connection when the server reports 2. Both mobile and web can therefore connect successfully but fail when they start a queued-message edit.

This is a wire-incompatible change. Increment the shared protocol version so the existing equality check blocks pre-PR servers instead of reporting compatibility.

βœ… Confirmed as addressed by @Andrew-Forster

Fixed in f2b0c4d62. Both protocol constants are now 3, so the existing compatibility check rejects protocol-2 servers before the client sends edit-hold commands. Added a protocol-2 regression test and updated the connection URL assertions. The 69 focused tests, two server protocol tests, contract/client typechecks, and scoped lint passed.

@Andrew-Forster, thanks for fixing this in f2b0c4d62. The protocol version bump and protocol-2 regression test address this finding.

Preserve the failed-run pause when completing an edit.

If the failed terminal event is committed before the detached terminal listener acquires the thread lock, queued-run.edit or queued-run.edit.cancel can acquire the lock first. Their post-commit startNextQueuedRun call does not pass failedRunId, and canStartQueuedRun does not treat a failed run as a blocker. After the edit clears queueEditId, the queue can enter status: "starting" before the listener writes queueHeld: true.

Make edit completion re-check the latest durable terminal failure before queue promotion. Preserve the existing validation_error exception and explicit resume behavior.

Restart the queue after queued-run.reorder.

If terminal handling stops at an edit-held head, reordering that run behind an unheld run does not restart the queue. Reorder emits only position updates, and both fresh dispatch and receipt replay omit queued-run.reorder from their startup checks. The terminal listener does not help because it filters for terminal run statuses.

Add queued-run.reorder to both startup conditions.

When queuedRunEditOwnership reports "lost", recoverQueuedMessageEdit moves the edit only if the thread composer is empty. Otherwise, it clears the edit draft. The warning toast does not provide recovery.

Preserve the edit when the thread draft is occupied.

When another client changes the queued run's edit owner, this client can enter the "lost" branch. If the thread draft already has text or attachments, keepable is false. endQueuedRunEdit then deletes the separate edit draft and cleans up its attachments. The edit cannot be restored after a restart because queued-edit keys are excluded during draft hydration.

Merge the edit into the thread draft before ending edit mode. Preserve attachments beyond the send limit so the user can trim them later.

Updated this branch with main in 48fcc41045 and a navigation follow-up in d8e9db9f0d. This keeps Julius's ownership/recovery rebuild and the existing contributor history.

The integration preserves Send now without letting it bypass an edit hold. I also reused main's shared edit lifecycle after reproducing two navigation regressions; both now pass, including keeping newer text when an older save finishes.

Current-head CI is green, and GitHub reports no merge conflicts. Local checks passed except an installation-detection test that also fails on unchanged main on Windows and a browser-start timeout; both browser suites passed separately.

Keeping this draft for current native-device evidence and maintainer review. The older recordings are still linked, but aren't being presented as validation of this updated build.

Synced from GitHub

Resolved the new main conflicts in 7de0ad1d6c and 766a98bb15. GitHub now reports no conflicts. Kept the updated queue layouts and preserved the edit holds and draft recovery. Typechecks, lint and formatting pass; all 7 browser regressions and 9 server hold tests pass. The changed-file run has one unrelated Windows install-detection failure, reproduced against main. Keeping this draft for current native evidence and maintainer review.
