ChatGPT account models can advertise reasoning choices while native Codex discovery provides no selector. Preserve that account metadata so explicit reasoning choices survive composer normalization.

The fallback fills only missing reasoning controls, keeps native controls and unrelated options, uses the catalog default, and ignores malformed optional metadata per model. Native Astra retains its existing medium default. This server metadata is shared by web, desktop, mobile, and agent model selection; no wire or UI code changes.

Based on @niburhsoj’s work in #17865. Maintainer takeover preserves the contributor commits and merges main instead of rewriting their branch. Seven added tests were reduced to three focused behavior tests in the existing catalog test file.

Verification:

  • Red/green: with main production files, 3 regression tests fail and the 2 existing tests pass; with the fix all 5 pass.
  • 70 tests pass across CodexChatGptModels.test.ts, CodexProvider.test.ts, packages/shared/src/model.test.ts, and composerProviderState.test.tsx. Scoped server typecheck and targeted lint/format pass; git diff --check is clean.
  • Test-level proof covers catalog-only selectors, default presentation vs explicit selection, native capability preservation, and malformed metadata isolation. No authenticated live ChatGPT catalog or integrated client was exercised in this takeover. Screenshots are not supplied for this server-only change.
  • macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not verified. Human confirmation of selector/default presentation remains outstanding; independent agent review does not supply that approval.

Current-head CI suites pass. Duplicate native-fingerprint cancellation has a successful replacement on the same head; it is not counted as a passing check. The PR remains unmerged for the human approval described above.

Implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol; tests: GPT-6-Astra; independent reviews: Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol (one full-diff round, no code blockers). Codex and Claude harnesses through T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This restores reasoning controls for ChatGPT account models by propagating catalog metadata into server capability descriptors, including a newly visible/default reasoning choice for account-only models. Native capabilities remain preserved and malformed metadata is isolated, but the new default behavior warrants human confirmation.

📝 Walkthrough

The Codex catalog now accepts optional reasoning metadata. Catalog mapping adds a reasoning descriptor when native capabilities lack one and valid supported efforts are available. Tests cover defaults, native controls, malformed metadata, and option selection.

Changes: Codex reasoning controls

Layer / File(s)Summary
Build Codex reasoning descriptors
apps/server/src/provider/CodexProvider.ts
The exported helper builds a reasoning-effort descriptor from supported efforts and an optional default. Native capability mapping uses the helper and omits the descriptor when no efforts exist.
Apply catalog reasoning metadata
apps/server/src/provider/CodexChatGptModels.ts, apps/server/src/provider/CodexChatGptModels.test.ts
The catalog schema accepts optional reasoning metadata. Mapping adds a descriptor when native capabilities lack one and valid efforts decode successfully. Tests verify defaults, preserved capabilities, hidden-model filtering, and malformed metadata handling.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: maria-rcks

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 41054

This change restores reasoning controls for ChatGPT account models when native discovery lacks them, and no actionable merge-blocking risk is evident. A live authenticated catalog was not exercised, which is normal validation uncertainty rather than a concrete defect.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 41054

The change adds optional selection metadata without changing sign-in, permissions, or deployment. Existing controls remain authoritative. Behavior with live account data and integrated clients remains unverified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed exposure is reasoning-option metadata for models published by the selected authenticated provider instance. The inspected path does not grant additional account, filesystem, or tool authority; those permissions remain independently selected through existing runtime policy.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Catalog effort identifiers are checked for nonempty-string shape, not against a fixed allowlist. Normal turns validate effort through their protocol schema. Auxiliary text generation instead reads raw selection text into an existing CLI configuration argument; this behavior is unchanged from the comparison base. Its existing command serializer uses direct arguments outside Windows batch execution and escaping for Windows batch execution. These controls do not prove compatibility with every future catalog identifier.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Fallback precedence and per-model optional decoding contain metadata failures without replacing existing native controls or introducing shared mutable capability state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As defense in depth, validate reasoning values against the applicable execution contract and serialize CLI configuration strings explicitly at the execution boundary. This addresses pre-existing raw-value handling; it is not a demonstrated vulnerability introduced by this PR.

Preserve catalog defaults for catalog-derived descriptors.

When a catalog-only gpt-6-astra supplies "low" as its default and supports "medium", mapCodexReasoningEffortDescriptor marks "medium" as the default. The helper is used by both native and catalog paths, so the Astra override is not native-only. Make the override explicit for native mapping and disable it for catalog-derived descriptors. Add a catalog-only test for this case.

✅ Addressed in commit 6b3de02

Fixed in 6b3de02ba7. The generic helper now uses only the supplied default; mapCodexModelCapabilities applies the historical Astra medium override explicitly on the native path. Added a red/green catalog-only Astra regression showing catalog low remains low while native Astra remains medium. Opus 5.5 reviewed this correction before push and approved. Focused tests, server typecheck, targeted lint/format and diff check pass.

@niburhsoj Thanks for the fix in 6b3de02ba7. Keeping the Astra override in mapCodexModelCapabilities preserves native behavior without changing catalog defaults. The reported regression test covers both paths.

  • fix(codex): preserve account catalog reasoning defaults6b3de02
Synced from GitHub

Follow-up on related reports and default presentation:

  • Reviewed #14321 and its maintainer triage. That report distinguishes intentional managed-account model availability from missing configured custom-model reasoning descriptors. This PR does not add unlisted/custom models or service tiers; it handles list-visible account models whose advertised reasoning metadata has no native descriptor. Related PR #15272 changes text-generation fallback, not this mapping. My initial search missed #14321; broader follow-up searches found no exact duplicate implementation. The PR body now documents that distinction without claiming to close #14321.
  • Macroscope raises a human scope/default-confirmation question, not a code-review approval. The added descriptor displays the account catalog default; it does not invent a product default. An added assertion verifies no explicit user choice produces no dispatched model option. CodeRabbit correctly found the Astra exception leaking into the account path; that is now corrected in 6b3de02ba7, with native behavior preserved.
  • 70 focused tests pass (69 catalog/provider/composer/shared tests and 1 targeted adapter case), plus server typecheck and targeted lint/format. Opus 5.5 approved the incremental correction. Human confirmation of the newly visible/default presentation is still requested; agent approval is not maintainer sign-off.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch codex-01. Keeping the focused reasoning-control fix, updating it against main, reducing regression coverage, and running independent reviews. I will add commits on this head branch; no merge is planned.

At dde935ccdcdc7bd2ed6f03ba4a32015c3a2b1bb8, the catalog fallback again applies codexDefaultReasoningEffortOverride(model.slug) before default_reasoning_level (CodexChatGptModels.ts:57–61). The new catalog-only gpt-6-astra fixture supplies default_reasoning_level: "low", but its assertion expects Medium. This conflicts with the body’s catalog-default claim and the earlier correction described in https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/pull/17865#issuecomment-6100079778.

Please preserve Low for the catalog-derived descriptor while keeping the native Astra override separate, or clarify explicit maintainer direction for applying Medium to account-only Astra and update the stated behavior/test accordingly. This is source inspection only: exact-base/head execution and authenticated client validation remain unrun. Green CI does not resolve that default-policy mismatch.
