feat(dev): add an update lab for multi-environment update testing#17584

t3/update-lab

update behavior needs a repeatable way to exercise several environments without changing real provider installations. this linux maintainer lab runs isolated servers, simulated provider/package-manager layouts, a local npm registry and release feed, and the real service launcher.

requires linux, /proc, flock, ss, bash/git/tar, the repo's node version and installed dependencies. homes, caches, temporary files and state stay below .t3/update-lab. down preserves state; reset clears it while retaining two lock files. topology and initial runtime version require down then reset to change. host and busy duration can change after down.

T3CODE_NPM_REGISTRY_URL controls fallback provider advisory HTTP lookups. T3CODE_RELEASE_INDEX_BASE_URL controls CLI release discovery at <base>/index.json?per_page=100&page=N. unset values keep public npm and github. ambient npm_config_registry does not redirect the fallback advisory lookup; package-manager-owned discovery still uses that manager's configuration. T3CODE_RELEASE_BASE_URL remains download-only. github authentication stays on public discovery and is never forwarded to index mirrors. this stays draft for maintainer approval of the lab and those production settings.

rebased onto 6f41364805, preserving julius's lookup coverage, lifecycle ownership, locking, configuration validation and rollback support. main already contains the scripts dependency registrations. its static mock-update-server.ts does not replace the lab's dynamic npm metadata and paginated release index without adding machinery. fixed metadata probes accidentally mutating simulated installs after main added npm/pnpm discovery commands.

verification on boat linux x64, node 26.12.1, head 58cd7d48d74c9540c569df63937f6cf5611eb674:

  • vp run check:changed passed on blacksmith, including formatting, lint, both knip passes, graphql generation, affected typechecks and 103 tests in four existing files. the three focused update files passed 102 tests. no new test files.
  • the documented flow passed normally and with the filesystem outside .t3/update-lab mounted read-only. a write outside the lab was rejected. normal-run syscall tracing found only lab file writes plus kernel cgroup/oom controls and device handles; the sealed run also mounted /proc and /sys read-only. real provider executables and installation/config trees had identical sha256 snapshots before and after.
  • all 15 simulated updates across three environments changed their versions. codex, claude, pi and grok reported successful updates. opencode's homebrew, bun and native commands ran and persisted their versions; its status remains an error and update verification says unchanged because the lab intentionally does not simulate opencode serve. methods exercised: npm prefix, pnpm, bun, yarn, volta, vite-plus, homebrew formula/cask and native updaters. grok's npm/bun layouts select its native updater on current main. a separate fourth environment proved mise is manual-only: it reported update=manual, and the update RPC refused one-click updates.
  • the real launcher downloaded the lab release and committed 0.1.5 β†’ 0.1.6. a real authenticated RPC snapshot proved the mock-acp busy run was running. env1's codex update left env2/env3 unchanged. all recorded lab processes stopped before reset.

transcript from the sealed run, with pairing tokens removed and repeated provider rows omitted:

this pass used API-only source runtimes because apps/web/dist was absent; no UI source changed. earlier maintainer proof at cc2bdcfe6d covers browser pairing and launcher database rollback. those interactions were not repeated here. web/mobile discovery keeps its normal source; self-update <env> <version> targets the lab launcher feed. cursor and antigravity have no simulated update path. macos, windows, ios/android, electron, real provider installation/upgrades and remote/relay/tunnel connections remain unverified. no contracts or bundling changes.

original implementation by maria-rcks; maintainer fixes by juliusmarminge preserved. this rebase and verification used gpt-6.1-sol through codex in t3 code.

When the feed process dies, rerunning up can move the feed to a new port while leaving live servers running with npm_config_registry and T3CODE_RELEASE_BASE_URL still pointing to the old port; provider discovery and self-update then cannot reach the feed. Reuse the previous port when it is free, or restart the servers when the feed origin changes.

The lab now reuses the dead feed's free port. If another listener occupies it, only the recorded lab servers restart with the new feed origin. Both cases were exercised: the first preserved all three server PIDs, and the second preserved the unrelated listener while all three environments discovered provider updates on the new origin.

Concurrent state updates can silently discard a successful install: two updateState calls can read the same state.json, then the later rename overwrites the earlier install's version. down can also write its stale snapshot after an installer finishes. Serialize cross-process mutations and avoid writing stale state snapshots.

State mutation now holds a kernel flock through read, mutation and rename. Lifecycle commands have their own lock and write fresh process fields, preserving concurrent installer writes. Concurrent Grok and Pi installs across all three environments persisted their successful versions.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable β€” This PR adds a large multi-environment update lab and changes production update lookups to honor configurable release and npm registry mirrors. It also introduces several explicit static-analysis suppressions in the new script, so the scope and review-policy impact warrant human review.

Walkthrough

Release and npm version lookups can use configured sources. A new command-line lab script creates isolated server environments with simulated providers, local feeds, and commands for exercising updates.

Changes: Update sources and lab

Layer / File(s)Summary
Configurable update sources
packages/shared/src/cliRelease.ts, apps/server/src/cli/update.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/maintenanceResolver.ts
The release-index URL helper and server update flow accept an optional release base URL. Latest-version lookups use the normalized npm_config_registry value, or the default npm registry when the setting is absent or empty.
Lab state and simulated providers
scripts/update-lab.ts
The script persists lab state, creates isolated provider tool layouts and projects, simulates provider commands and installs, and serves local npm and release feeds.
Runtime publishing and server lifecycle
scripts/update-lab.ts
The script publishes and installs launcher runtimes, manages isolated server processes, and sends authenticated RPC requests.
Lab commands and package entry point
scripts/update-lab.ts, package.json
The script provides startup, shutdown, status, provider update, busy-turn, runtime-build, and reset commands. The package script invokes the lab CLI.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template's section structure but is only partly complete. It has no explicit Problem heading and no Change heading, and the problem and change content is spread through the prose. The Scope and approval section is not satisfied. It gives no linked triaged issue or maintainer approval comment, and the author states the PR remains a draft pending maintainer approval of the lab and the production settings. The author also gives no justification for a missing issue or discussion. The Verification section is extensive and specific, with commands, environments, observed results, and items not checked. The author also states the PR is for a maintainer lab with production seams, and the template's approval requirement applies to it. Because the required approval evidence is missing, the description is incomplete on a critical requirement, but the template's other sections are substantially present.

Resolution

Add a clear Problem section that states the expected behavior and the reproduction or environment. Add a Change section that summarizes the fix and explains why each component change is needed. In Scope and approval, link the triaged issue or discussion that contains the explicit maintainer approval comment, or explain why a very small obvious bug fix qualifies without one. Keep the Verification section, and state the commit or head that the results refer to. Remove the note that the PR stays draft only if the approval is already in place, or link the approval directly.

If the server closes the WebSocket before sending an Exit, rpc leaves its promise pending until the 10-minute timeout, so update hangs after down instead of failing promptly. The socket has no close handler; reject through finish on close so the timer is cleared.

RPC settlement is now idempotent. Early socket closure and timeout both clear the timer and close the socket. Verified the exact failure by stopping the isolated lab while server.updateProvider was in flight: the command rejected immediately with socket closed before response, instead of waiting ten minutes.

The default launcher runtime serves no web client, so its pairing URL/UI returns HTTP 503 even when apps/web/dist exists. buildRuntime copies only apps/server, but the server looks for a sibling web/dist; copy the web build into the staged runtime.

Source runtimes now include an existing production web build under the sibling web/dist path. A missing build is explicitly reported as API-only. Rebuilt the staged runtime from the verified Blacksmith build; / and /pair both return HTTP 200 with the actual T3 client, and its JavaScript assets load with HTTP 200. The preview host disconnected before browser pairing completed, so that interaction remains unverified.

A live host change now fails before any state mutation and tells the caller to run down first. The guard checks only recorded owned lab servers under the lifecycle/state locks. Reproduced the old failure with 127.0.0.2; the fixed command exits 1 with state byte-for-byte unchanged, and omitted-host up preserves PIDs. After down, all three environments restarted on 127.0.0.2 and served /pair with HTTP 200. Restored 127.0.0.1 afterward.

Stop early with a clear message on hosts other than Linux.

The lab depends on three things only Linux provides:

  • acquireLock runs the flock command (Line 201).
  • listeningPorts runs ss (Line 730).
  • isLabProcess reads /proc/<pid>/cmdline and /proc/<pid>/cwd (Lines 762-766).

On macOS, up, down, reset, publish, fail and delay throw spawnSync flock ENOENT before they do any work. isLabProcess also always returns false there, so down never signals a recorded process. The help text mentions Homebrew formulae and casks, so macOS users may try the lab. Add an explicit platform check before main runs.

Fixed in cc2bdcfe6d: user-facing operational commands reject unsupported hosts and missing Linux prerequisites before locks or state writes; help remains readable everywhere. Internal fake-tool/feed reentries skip redundant probes. Verified simulated non-Linux and missing-tool errors, plus real isolated Linux lab startup, updates, launcher rollback and shutdown.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for fixing this in cc2bdcfe6d. The early prerequisite checks address the finding while keeping help available on unsupported hosts.

Taking over this one for maintainer batch ssh-relay-remote-15. I will keep this draft while checking the local lab and production registry/release-feed seams, with isolated Linux verification before publishing any changes.

Maintainer takeover is published at cc2bdcf. Two independent second-round reviews found no blocking code findings; all review threads are resolved. Current-head lint, build/typecheck, server/web/shared tests, Rust and release smoke pass. One fingerprint run was cancelled, with a later fingerprint run successful. The description contains the focused test counts and live launcher/database-rollback proof. This remains draft for human review of the explicit production lookup settings. T3 monitoring repeatedly failed host reads despite successful direct GitHub reads; no monitor is relied on for readiness. Nothing merged.
