feat(cua): turn on computer use from settings on any host#16530

Computer use can now be configured from Settings on the host that runs the environment. Web setup requires choosing one host when several are configured, explains which machine needs permission, and keeps failed saves open for retry. The mobile Agent behavior toggle retains its existing bulk selection behavior.

Setup waits for persistence before closing or restarting the local Mac driver. The status refreshes while Settings is visible and distinguishes startup, running, and driver failure. Disable, the row reset, and Restore device defaults with an explicit environment selected all return computer use to off. Restore also fixes authorization validating already-decoded duration values as encoded numbers, which previously dropped the remote connection during a full defaults save.

This remains the original dependent layer on t3code/cua/3-presentation, pinned at ce33ec92. It preserves Julius Marminge’s original work in #16530; parent provider and driver architecture stay in their existing layers.

Verification on ea01aa1c:

  • Primary CuaDriver and restore tests: 24 original → 28, preserving all 23 parent cases. Two service cases cover platform identity, lifecycle, failed startup and recovery; two updater cases cover save completion, retry and destination permission. The additional RPC authorization regression increases that existing suite from 24 to 25 and reproduced the exact Duration schema failure before the fix.
  • 201 focused cases passed across nine existing files during implementation and review. The previous functional head passed all 53 CuaDriver, restore and authorization cases, plus 71 Integrations and search cases. After the final compiler cleanup, all 78 affected restore, Integrations and search cases passed again; server files and the other supporting suites were unchanged after their earlier pass. Web, mobile, contracts, client runtime and server typechecks passed; the final authorization change passed a narrow server check and fresh web check. Targeted lint, formatting and whitespace checks passed.
  • Actual web client with two isolated Linux servers: Settings search reaches Computer use and preserves the selected host; All environments offers a host chooser; Finish later leaves computer use off; enable, disable and the row reset persist only on the selected remote host. Full Restore device defaults names Computer use, saves successfully, and leaves both the selected remote and untouched primary host off. Verified the actual settings JSON after each operation.
  • Controlled boundaries in the actual Settings client: a rejected save leaves the dialog open and switch off; restoring the real command and retrying saves successfully. Controlled status responses change from waiting for an agent session to Running, crash and recovery without leaving Settings; polling stops after unmount.
  • Two fresh parallel full-layer review rounds on Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol: no remaining introduced code blockers. An optional read-only reset concern was checked against the shared Settings row and rejected because it already hides reset without write permission.

Before — actual parent Integrations component, same isolated fixture and 1280×800 viewport; no Computer section:

Before: Integrations ends with device settings

After — selected remote host with computer use enabled:

After: remote computer use setup and enabled state

Actual two-host flow: host selection, cancellation, enable, disable and Restore device defaults:

Controlled status responses exercise the actual visible Settings polling path:

Linux web settings and RPC behavior were exercised. This headless environment cannot verify native macOS permission grants/restart, Windows or Wayland graphical startup, Electron shell behavior, or native iOS/Android settings. Those remain native verification items; injected platform service tests and controlled client responses do not establish native readiness. Direct local/remote connections were exercised; relay and tunnel transports were not.

Compiler follow-up: removed three introduced React Compiler bailouts in save/setup handlers. Focused transforms over every changed web file now match the pinned parent’s eight inherited diagnostics exactly; no new bailout remains. The 78 affected Settings, Integration, and search tests, scoped lint/formatting, and web typecheck pass. Both independent reviewers rechecked the full layer, and failed-save retry was exercised again in the actual two-host client on the final head.

Known inherited limitation: Restore device defaults under project or checkout scope can name environment-wide settings without resetting them. Select an explicit environment for the verified Computer use restore path. This layer does not change the existing general project/checkout restore semantics.

Tests: GPT-6-Astra. Implementation and integrated proof: GPT-6.1-Sol through Codex in T3 Code. Independent reviewers: Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Agent and GPT-6-Sol through Codex in T3 Code.

Final-head host checkpoint: Macroscope correctness passed on ea01aa1c; Approvability explicitly requires human review for cross-platform activation and RPC authorization changes. CodeRabbit’s automatic review was still in progress at handoff; its prior compiler finding is fixed, replied to and resolved. The branch’s existing CI workflow targets pull requests against main, so it does not run on this dependent base. No CI pass is claimed for absent jobs. All watchers are stopped; coordinator owns approval and landing.

Rebased onto current main, which split the Integrations settings page: computer use now sits in the Devices page's Computer section, and old /settings/integrations#computer links redirect there. The screenshots above predate that split.

Taking over this settings layer for batch settings-theme-03. I will trim the tests, rebuild the host-aware setup against its existing dependency layer, and verify enable, disable, and restore defaults in an isolated Linux client. Landing remains with the coordinator.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This exposes opt-in computer use through settings with host status and permission guidance, without changing its default. The new lint suppression on the status-polling effect requires human review under the configured policy.

Walkthrough

Adds computer-use settings for web and mobile, host-status reporting through a WebSocket RPC, and a setup flow with platform-specific guidance. Scoped settings updates now return save outcomes, and settings restore includes the computer-use option.

Restore may appear complete even when a client setting was not saved. This is a bounded risk, but the save outcome should account for client persistence.

Remove the try/finally compiler bailout from save.

This is a mandatory React Compiler coverage issue, not an established functional wrong-result bug. The scoped settings update returns persistence failures as results, so cleanup can follow the awaited call.

✅ Addressed in commit ea01aa1

Fixed in ea01aa1c. Removed try/finally from the nonrejecting Settings save path and moved setup-handler cleanup after their catch blocks. Compiler transforms over all six changed web files now introduce zero diagnostics relative to the pinned parent (three introduced bailouts removed; eight inherited diagnostics remain). All 78 affected tests, scoped lint/formatting and web typecheck pass. Two fresh full-layer reviewers found no introduced blockers; the final-head actual two-host client also passed failed-save retry and enable/disable persistence. No test growth.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The updated save handler removes the flagged try/finally and preserves persistence, refresh, and cleanup order. Your reported compiler checks and failed-save retry checks cover the concern raised here.

In All environments scope, changedSettingLabels stays empty when the representative host has enableCua at its default but another selected host has it enabled, so Restore device defaults is disabled; when another dirty setting enables restore, the confirmation also omits Computer use even though the reset clears it on that host. useScopedSettings exposes only the representative host here, while updateSettings applies the reset to every selected host; check enableCua across all scoped targets when building the label.

Include client persistence in the save result.

persistScopedSettingsPatch calls persistClient without awaiting it. persistClientSettingsPatch catches persistence failures and resolves normally. A restore that includes client settings can therefore return { saved: true } and call onRestored even when those settings were not written to storage.

This client write was already fire-and-forget at the merge base, so the persistence failure itself is not a new major regression. The new saved result is still incomplete. Have persistScopedSettingsPatch await a promise-returning client callback and propagate its rejection. Keep explicit error handling at callers that intentionally fire and forget client writes.
