Current verification

Integrated main 2359643cffa6ba9ee84d6f2694b935de54a8013e while preserving the existing PR history. At 190c3c21a56cd1dee81dbcda1f9be730ec1ee199, vp run check:changed against that main revision passed 464 selected tests, compiler checks, affected package types, formatting, lint, unused-code and applicable dependency/schema checks.

Hosted CI and reviews must be assessed at this head. No integrated web/desktop or native-client pass was performed in this update. Earlier verification and media below retain their stated historical revisions; existing proposal and approval requirements remain as described below.

Current authorization follows main: standard pairings include access:write, so plugin installation and settings mutations are available to those sessions. Earlier traces that describe standard pairings as view-only predate that scope change. Mobile continues to expose its deliberately read-only plugin screens.

Compatibility update and verification: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex harness through T3 Code.

Historical verification

Compatibility repair at 7c5aa27:

  • Corrected the mobile status strip's AppText import to its current components/ui/AppText location. Mobile tsc-rs --noEmit -p apps/mobile/tsconfig.json passed at that historical revision; the parent CI failed on that removed import path.
  • Carried forward the matching web compatibility repair from the status layer: eight renderer suites migrated to React DOM and four existing DOM suites moved into the compiled browser project; three redundant manual memoization calls removed; Device promise cleanup retains its async boundary and thread scope; terminal transport mock no longer exposes an accidental then method. The old parent status layer and this PR differed only in the nine preserved mobile/doc files.
  • Focused mobile layout and presentation tests: 2 files / 54 passed. Compiler-enabled jsdom web fallback: 12 files / 50 passed. Targeted React Compiler coverage: 15 passed / 1,012 unrelated skipped. Web and mobile typechecks, lint/formatting on all 16 changed files and diff checks pass. Lint retains one inherited array-index-key warning in a test stub.
  • Native Chromium command stopped at config loading because existing dependencies lack @vitest/browser-playwright; no dependencies were installed. The jsdom fallback excludes the browser-profile interaction test, uses scratch-only getAnimations/scrollIntoView shims and emits unsupported-canvas warnings. It is not Chromium verification. The same inherited repair on #16045 still has an unresolved Chromium mock-factory CI abort. Historical CI is blocked: Test Web aborts with an unhandled Vitest mock-factory rejection, and aggregate Check fails. The nested cause repeats the wrapper rather than naming the underlying module or exception. FilesSidePanel.browser.test.tsx is reported with zero tests before the abort; this does not establish which mock caused it. Lint, Build and Typecheck, Test, Rust, Release Smoke and all eight server shards pass. A later native fingerprint run passes after a cancelled duplicate. Diagnosis needs a focused Chromium run in an environment with the existing browser provider available and the underlying mock exception exposed; the jsdom passes do not clear this failure.
  • No fresh native-device build, integrated client run or captures were performed for this compatibility repair. Media below retain their named historical revisions. Local Node 24.12 is below the workspace's declared ^24.13.1 range. Verification used an isolated source fixture with existing dependencies; no live T3 state was changed. Git hooks are unavailable in that non-Git fixture, so focused lint and format checks ran explicitly.
  • Fresh independent review was skipped because recovery instructions prohibit delegates. CodeRabbit remains paused; its retained review ends at 66daed0 and does not cover this repair. Earlier findings were addressed in the recorded replies; the new summary adds no actionable finding.
  • Macroscope requires human approval for the 74-file Pi status capability, inherited panel architecture, server defaults and operational impact. No new inline finding accompanies that verdict. This PR stays open and unmerged.

Historical integration notes

Rebased 2026-10-10 onto #15010's current head (1fe8efd69a, on main 57b3780770). Apart from context lines, the patch is unchanged by this rebase, so the earlier review still applies. Captures below were taken at the revisions they name. At this head (ee45b127a5) these pass: focused tests (2 files, 48 tests), typecheck (@t3tools/mobile), lint and fmt on the changed files, knip, lint:mobile.

iOS: this PR's mobile surfaces were also captured on an iPhone 17 Pro simulator (iOS 26.5), at the top-of-stack head 5ec8b17425, which contains this PR: dark-status-details · dark-status-row · light-status-details · light-status-row. These are after-only captures; the before/after comparison below is on Android.

Problem

Pi extensions report short statuses with ctx.ui.setStatus. After the previous PR in this stack, web and desktop show them beside the thread title, but the iOS and Android apps show nothing. Someone following a Pi thread from their phone loses the hint the extension uses to say what it is doing.

Why this qualifies

This is the proposal route in CONTRIBUTING. It is the mobile half of the Pi status work proposed under Ideas discussion #6837 (Pi-style extension API: hooks, UI contributions, settings) and the agent status line request #14557, ideally agreed in one "show Pi setStatus on the thread" Ideas post. No maintainer has agreed to this direction yet. It depends on the stacked PR "feat(pi): show extension statuses in the thread header", which adds the contract, the server stream and the shared client-runtime atoms. The mobile layer adds no further server or contract change; the complete main-based contribution includes the inherited server and contract changes described above. Both PRs remain open pending maintainer direction. Previous PR in this stack: feat(pi): show extension statuses in the thread header (#16045).

Fix

  • State (apps/mobile/src/state/contribution-status.ts): one instance of the shared client-runtime status atoms, wired to the mobile connection runtime and server config. It subscribes only when the server advertises the capability, as on web.
  • Presentation (thread-contribution-status-presentation.ts): a pure function that flattens a thread's entries into chips in the server's order. Each chip is keyed by source and item key, so a provider-session takeover re-keys the chip and the same key from two sources stays two chips. The accessibility label is " status: ", and the help line says where it came from and that it can lag a session change.
  • UI (ThreadContributionStatusStrip.tsx, mounted in ThreadDetailScreen): a horizontal row of compact chips floating just under the navigation header. It sits under the glass header on iOS 26 and at the top of the screen under an opaque header. The first chip of each source shows its provider icon. Non-neutral tones show a small dot in theme semantic colors. Chip targets are at least 44pt on iOS and 48dp on Android. A tap opens an alert titled " status" whose body holds the full text, the tooltip if any, and the help line. The text goes in the body because native alert titles truncate (Android cuts the title after two lines). Nothing renders when there are no statuses, and there is no animation.
  • Feed geometry (ThreadFeed topOverlayInset, deriveThreadFeedTopGeometry): the feed reserves the row's height above its first row and in the offset a just-sent message anchors to, so the strip never covers the oldest loaded row, the "Load earlier activity" control or a new message. Pi threads reserve that band from the start (reservesContributionStatusBand), so a status appearing, changing or clearing never moves the feed. Composer and keyboard insets are unchanged. The screen subscribes only to whether the thread has a status, so status text changes do not re-render it.
  • Docs: docs/user/providers-pi.md says where statuses appear on mobile.

The historical mobile layer was 9 files, +436 / −6; the current main-based contribution is the full 74-file range described above.

Historical evidence

These captures and measurements apply to the earlier revisions stated below; none were recaptured for the current compatibility repair.

Environment: owned Android emulator (API 36, 1080×2400, 420 dpi), dev client built from this branch, isolated vp run dev on fresh local state, Pi 1.0.2 with a proof extension whose ctx.ui.setStatus calls follow a control file, local Llama 3.2 3B. Before = the base PR head, after = this head; same thread, same script. The header subtitle (machine name) is masked.

Observed

  • Before: statuses are set on the server, but the phone shows nothing in any step.
  • After: chips appear under the header and follow set, replace, clear one key and clear all. Each chip is a Button 126 px (48dp) high, labelled "Pi status: ".
  • No jumps: in all four runs (before and after, light and dark) the composer stays at [159,2211][924,2306] and the last feed row stays put through open, set, replace, clear one key and clear all (uiautomator bounds).
  • At the top of the feed, the first message starts at y482, below the strip (bottom y427). Its copy control takes the tap (Android clipboard preview), with the keyboard closed and open.
  • Clearing every key the extension controls leaves its own t3-trace chip. Detaching the provider session clears that too, and the reserved band stays empty with the first row in place (External image).
  • TalkBack is partly checked: the service ran and focused the alert's help text (External image), but chip focus, speech and double-tap activation were not verified.

Historical checks at ba742e03a1, re-run 2026-10-05 (CI=true, all exit 0):

  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/lib/layout.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-contribution-status-presentation.test.ts: 2 files, 48 tests pass. New feed tests: the first row and an anchored message rest below the strip under an opaque header; under the glass header only the strip is added; nothing changes without a strip. New band tests: a Pi thread keeps the band through set, replace and clear; other providers and servers without the stream reserve nothing. Recorded during development: with the feed and presenter sources from before the overlap fix, 6 of these fail. A presenter test checks that the alert body carries the full status text, the tooltip and the help line under a short "Pi status" title. It fails on the previous revision of this branch, where the full text was the alert title. The presenter tests (empty thread; keys and server order with duplicate keys across sources; takeover re-keys; label and help never claim freshness) fail on the base PR because the presenter does not exist there.
  • vp run --filter @t3tools/mobile typecheck, vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives on the touched files (warnings only in ThreadDetailScreen.tsx and ThreadFeed.tsx, the same 18 and 24 as the base files), vp run lint:mobile (ktlint and detekt are not installed on the build host, so the script skips them), vp fmt --check, vp run knip:check. All pass; no lint warning is on a line this PR changes.
  • Not part of the re-run: node scripts/release-smoke.ts passed when this PR was built, and again at the top of this stack (the example plugins PR), which contains this change.

Surfaces

  • Entry points: the thread screen only. No settings, list row or action; statuses are display hints.
  • Clients: iOS and Android (this PR); web and desktop come in the base PR.
  • Providers: Pi produces statuses. Codex, Claude, Cursor, Grok, OpenCode and Antigravity have no setStatus equivalent: not applicable. The chip label and icon follow the source's provider, so another producer would need no mobile change.
  • Contracts: none changed. A new app on an old server sees no capability, does not subscribe, and shows nothing.
  • Reverse states: an extension clears a key with empty text; session stop or a T3-initiated switch clears statuses on the server; the row disappears when the last one clears.
  • Connection modes: uses the base PR's read stream over local, direct remote, relay and tunnel connections. No new traffic beyond that stream.
  • Docs: docs/user/providers-pi.md updated.

Not verified

  • The chip-tap frames above come from a later run on this head than the rest of the matrix, after the alert was changed to carry the full text in its body. The recordings still show the earlier alert, where a long status title was cut after two lines. The chip itself still clips a long status at the screen edge; tapping it shows the full text.
  • "Load earlier activity" never appeared in the test thread (a few long entries fit one history page). It sits in the same list header directly below the reserved band.
  • TalkBack speech and double-tap activation on a chip.
  • iOS: not captured. The simulator build is blocked on the build host by a foreign xcodebuild process, which was left alone.
  • A Pi thread with no status shows a blank band the strip's height above its first row; it is visible only at the very top of the feed.
  • Mobile thread list rows do not show statuses.

Merge Risk: External image Low · previous review 66dae

Thread annotation sends are now limited to the thread that started them. One small issue remains: closing a terminal can produce an unhandled error if the close request or the fallback exit write fails. This is a low-impact follow-up, not a broad blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 66dae

The new status channel is read-authorized, bounded, and rendered as advisory plain text. Panel actions retain existing send controls and gain explicit thread binding. No material security regression was established, but status clearing during authorization or connection loss remains insufficiently demonstrated.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A caller with orchestration-read scope receives statuses for populated threads throughout one server environment, not just the open thread. Stored visible content is capped at 128 items across 64 visible threads, with eight items per source. Exposure includes status text, optional tooltips, thread IDs, and provider-source identity.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new subscription passes through authenticated WebSocket setup and connection-scope RPC middleware. It requires orchestration-read scope; the inspected RPC test verifies rejection of a caller holding only relay-read scope.
  • observed — Panel annotations use the existing ChatView onSend path, retaining operation-scope and send-readiness gates. The new sender checks the captured environment/thread key against the latest committed sender, rejecting stale panel actions after a thread change.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The store serializes mutations and snapshots under a mutex. Slot generations invalidate replaced producers, repeated binding preserves an owned slot, stale clears cannot remove replacement data, and source-scope finalization releases only the still-owned slot.
  • inferred — Immediate removal of already-received status data during authorization failure or session absence remains unproven. The status selector reads a generic subscription result, session absence emits no replacement frame, and the inspected reconnect test clears data only after a new snapshot. This does not establish delivery to an unauthorized caller.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit status-cache invalidation policy for authorization loss and account/session replacement, including the interval before any replacement snapshot arrives. This would make the privacy and freshness guarantee independent of generic stream-atom behavior.

Explanation

The PR adds a contribution-status subsystem across packages and apps, including a new contract in packages/contracts/src/contributionStatus.ts, server storage in apps/server/src/contributions/ContributionStatusStore.ts, client state in packages/client-runtime/src/state/contributionStatus.ts, and mobile UI in apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadContributionStatusStrip.tsx. It also includes a broad web panel refactor; apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx has 898 changed lines in the reviewed diff. This matches the rule: “Adds a subsystem or user workflow, or is a large refactor across apps or packages.”

Resolution

This pull request needs a maintainer's review under the subsystem and large-refactor rule. A maintainer should review the contribution-status changes and the web panel refactor before CodeRabbit approves it.

🟡 Medium Adapters/PiAdapterV2.ts:1255

Late setStatus events from the session being left are written to the newly bound thread, so a shutdown status such as legacy=old-shutdown-write is displayed as current provider state until another update or session close. Track the originating native session (or discard post-switch shutdown events) before calling statusSource.set/clear.

No longer relevant as of 16a80ba8c623738e884922025d7108b2d02e7da9

Known and documented. Pi's RPC stream gives setStatus no session identity and marks no rebind boundary, so a shutdown write that follows the switch cannot be told apart from the new session's own statuses. The adapter header describes this residual, and a test pins it so it gets flipped once Pi exposes the boundary. A later status update or closing the session clears it.

When a switch_session, new_session, or rollback fork returns { cancelled: true }, the still-active native session loses all displayed statuses. lifecycleRequest queues the t3.status_generation marker before the transition is accepted, so the cancellation path still clears the old status source and rebinds it to null; enqueue the marker only after the lifecycle operation succeeds.

No longer relevant as of 0c5808f6551dfdd60181d2e06e487cab0d3d606d

Partly agreed. For a rollback fork, the thread stays usable after a cancel, so its statuses are now put back (see the fix on #16045). For switch_session and new_session, registration retires the old binding before the request because even a failed lifecycle call can change Pi's session. With no thread registered, showing no statuses is intended and tested. The marker has to go out before the request, because Pi's rebind statuses arrive before its response.

Fixed in the layer that introduced it (#16045, commit 8b674726bd); the PRs above it carry the same commit.

This guard moved unchanged from ChatView in the base branch, so the stack does not change it. The suggested change would also break the common case: when the first terminal opens, the server list is empty while the client already holds the new id, and reconciling then drops the terminal being opened. A real fix needs a signal that a session ended, not a length check.

Rechecked after rebasing onto current main: unchanged from main, and the suggested empty-list exception would drop a terminal that is still opening (the server list is empty while the client already holds the new id). Resolving here; a correct fix needs a session-ended signal.

Once the server has opened the preview session, dropping the result left that session hidden. openUrlInPreview no longer checks the visit after openPreview resolves: the session is applied to the thread it was opened for, which never touches the thread you moved to. Work that has not asked the server yet is still dropped, and errors are still shown only to the visit that started them. Covered by "keeps a browser the server opened after the thread was left in that thread".

Fixed in the layer that introduced it (#16044, commit 31a446e6ba); the PRs above it carry the same commit.

Fixed in #16044 (commit bc0076ad2b): Open in browser now uses a lifetime keyed only by the thread, so switching the composer to a queued-message draft no longer drops it. Add to chat keeps the draft-aware lifetime. Covered by "still opens a browser after the composer switches drafts in the same thread". The PRs above carry the same commit.

Restore the shared thread.worktreePath mock in a finally block.

The test resets thread.worktreePath only at Line 110. If either assertion fails, the hoisted mock keeps "/repo/.worktrees/feature". Later tests then get wrong state and fail as well, which hides the original failure. Move the reset into afterEach or a try/finally.

Close the drawer store entry only after the close command settles, or handle a rejected close.

The closeTerminal callback starts an async IIFE that is never awaited. If closeTerminalMutation rejects instead of returning a Failure result, nothing catches the rejection. The same is true if fallbackExitWrite rejects. Either case produces an unhandled promise rejection. Add a .catch to the IIFE so that a transport error does not reach the global error handler.

This is unchanged from main: the same un-awaited close and fallbackExitWrite are in main's ChatView, and this stack only moves that code into PersistentThreadTerminalDrawer. A rejection handler belongs in a change to the terminal close path, not in this move.

@saphid, agreed. Thanks for clarifying the scope. I withdraw this finding from the extraction. The move preserves the existing close behavior; rejection handling belongs in a separate terminal close-path change.

Reject stale annotation sends after navigation.

PreviewView retains the callback from the pick-start render while it waits for the picker. If the thread changes before the pick settles, the callback can send the current composer prompt and context to the original threadIdForSend. Reject the stale send before calling onSend; the annotation and image are already stored on the original thread’s draft.

On the current base this send can no longer happen. PreviewView (main #9789) cancels an in-flight pick when the thread changes and returns before calling onSendAnnotation, so the retained closure never sends for a thread you left. The Preview side panel test now asserts that a late pick reaches neither thread (02-panel-host, 60e7d87ad2).

@saphid, you’re correct. PreviewView marks the in-flight pick as cancelled when the thread switch changes runtimeTabId. It then rejects the late result before calling onSendAnnotation.

The updated PreviewSidePanel.test.tsx asserts that neither thread receives the send callback and no annotation is added. I inspected these assertions; I did not run the tests.

The suggested ChatView guard is unnecessary for this case. I withdraw the finding. Thanks for the clarification.

5Learning: In the React/TypeScript preview flow, apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewView.tsx cancels an in-flight element pick when a thread switch changes runtimeTabId. The post-await pickRequest.cancelled guard rejects the late result before storing an annotation or calling onSendAnnotation. apps/web/src/panels/preview/PreviewSidePanel.test.tsx covers this through the registered panel path and asserts that neither thread receives the send callback. A retained PanelHost.sendAnnotation closure alone does not establish a stale-send bug; inspect the caller's cancellation guards.

site:react.dev/reference/react/useRef React render discarded render writing ref during render useLayoutEffect commit

💡 Result:

1React’s docs say **don’t read or write `ref.current` during render**, except for predictable one-time initialization. Render can run more than once, and in Strict Mode a ref object created during an extra development render may be discarded; render-phase mutations can therefore make behavior unpredictable. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useRef?utm_source=openai))
2
3Move the mutation into an event handler or an Effect. **`useLayoutEffect` runs after the component commits to the DOM and before the browser repaints**, so it’s appropriate when the ref update needs to happen before paint. ([react.dev](https://react.dev/reference/react/useLayoutEffect?utm_source=openai))

Update the annotation sender ref after commit.

An in-flight preview pick can read this ref after a same-thread render enters or exits queued-message edit mode. If React discards that render, the assignment can expose its onSend closure. The thread-key guard still passes, but onSend can update the queued message instead of sending a new turn. Move the assignment into useLayoutEffect.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @saphid

Fixed in 897efdfa52 "fix(web): lend the annotation sender only after the chat view commits". The sender is now updated in a layout effect, so a discarded render cannot lend its onSend. A pick right after a thread switch still goes only to the thread it was picked in.

@saphid Thanks for the fix. The supplied code updates annotationSenderRef.current in useLayoutEffect, so a discarded render cannot expose its onSend closure. This addresses the finding.

A retained PanelHost.sendAnnotation closure alone does not establish a stale-send bug; inspect the caller's cancellation guards.

this dry-run assessment proposes closure under the prior approval rule. the description says "no maintainer has agreed to this direction yet." the complete contribution adds the Pi extension status contract, server stream and client presentation, including the mobile chips. this introduces a capability beyond a focused configuration option or an obvious defect repair.

obtain explicit maintainer approval for the direction and scope in the linked Ideas discussion, including the inherited status and panel work, then link that approval and request reconsideration. the report that mobile users cannot see extension statuses remains useful. this is an unexecuted draft; no github action has been taken.

merged current main 3368dd70f2 without rebasing. the sole conflict in mobile layout keeps the status-strip feed inset helper and main's removal of the unused pane-role type. no feature scope changes.
