Codex threads in T3 Code can use Codex's own Computer Use. Claude, Cursor, Grok, Antigravity, ACP Registry, and OpenCode threads cannot use native apps or the browser tabs the user is signed in to.

This takes over #14523, which was closed before the new orchestrator (#2829) landed. It keeps the original commits and ports them to the new orchestrator.

It adds two opt-in settings under Settings β†’ Integrations β†’ Computer. Both are macOS only for now:

  • Agent computer access attaches Cua Driver (MIT), which the user installs, as an MCP server. It uses apps in the background and does not move the user's cursor.
  • Agent browser tabs attaches Chrome DevTools MCP to the Chromium browser the user already has open (Chrome, Helium, Brave, Edge, or Chromium).

Computer settings

How it works

  • Setup. Turning a switch on opens its setup. Apps setup installs Cua Driver with Cua's installer (pinned to 0.31.0). Then it asks macOS for Accessibility and Screen Recording for CuaDriver, not for T3 Code. Browser setup lists the browsers it finds, and its Done button installs Chrome DevTools MCP. A status check never installs anything.
  • Providers. ProviderSessionManager records the servers on each thread's MCP session. Claude, Cursor, the ACP adapters (Grok, Antigravity, ACP Registry), and OpenCode 1.x attach them and add their prompt text. Codex keeps its own Computer Use. OpenCode 2 registers MCP servers per directory, not per thread, and Pi has no MCP client, so neither attaches them yet.
  • Stopping. Cua ends a session, and removes its cursor, when the MCP process that owns it exits. A small proxy in front of cua-driver mcp, one per thread, lets T3 end the session when a turn ends and on Stop. The next tool call reconnects. The proxy also exits when T3 Code closes. While a turn uses Cua, the composer shows Using your computer with a Stop button.
  • Remote. Everything runs on the Mac that runs T3 Code. The setup dialogs name that Mac, and they say that someone at it must approve the macOS and browser prompts.

Changes since #14523

  • Ported to the new orchestrator. The old ProviderService and V1 adapter hooks no longer exist.
  • Status checks and session starts no longer run npm install (an open CodeRabbit finding on #14523).
  • The proxy handles a failed control socket and writes its script atomically. It also no longer deletes a newer proxy's socket when it exits, which a provider-session handoff can cause.
  • If the setup dialog closes right after Start, it now cancels the permission request (an open CodeRabbit finding).

Still WIP

  • macOS only.
  • The mobile app has no "Using your computer" banner. Stop on mobile still ends the session, because the server does it.
  • Cua tool calls show as plain MCP rows. #10899, from the Cua team, has app icons, @App tagging, and a live window preview. Those can follow on top of this PR.

Verification

  • New focused tests:
    • ProviderSessionManager: Stop and turn end each end the thread's Cua session once, and a late terminal event ends nothing. The test fails without the turn-end hook.
    • ComputerAccess: status and session start run no commands.
    • ChatView.logic: banner detection for each provider's tool naming.
  • Existing tests pass: ComputerAccess, CuaMcpProxy (end to end with a fake driver), RuntimeInstructions, RpcAuthorization, and the Claude, Cursor, ACP, Grok, ACP Registry, and OpenCode adapters. Server, web, contracts, and client-runtime typecheck clean.
  • Two AntigravityAdapterV2 file-system tests fail on this Mac with and without this change (a /var vs /private/var path issue).
  • Not verified after the port: a real Cua Driver session, and the setup dialogs in a real client. #14523 tested both by hand on one Mac before the port.

Original work by @t3dotgg in #14523, kept as separate commits.

Built with Claude Opus 5.5 in T3 Code, through the Claude Code harness.

Fixed in 58c9948. The proxy now ends the session first, then closes the control connection, and endCuaSession waits for close instead of connect (bounded to 2 seconds). The pump publishes the terminal only after that, so the next turn cannot reach the old driver.

Not changing this. The premise is wrong: enableAgentComputerAccess and enableAgentBrowserTabs are not in PROJECT_SCOPED_SERVER_SETTING_KEYS, so no project override can exist to shadow them. The server reads both only from environment settings in ComputerAccess.servers. Enabling writes only to the selected environment on purpose, because that is the only machine whose readiness the dialog checked (see the earlier finding on #14523).

Fixed in 58c9948. When the replayed initialize returns an error, the proxy drops that driver and fails the queued calls with the normal "Computer use stopped" error. The next call starts a new driver. The new CuaMcpProxy.test.ts case fails without the fix.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable β€” This PR adds a substantial cross-component integration that installs and launches external MCP servers, requests macOS permissions, controls native apps, and accesses signed-in browser profiles. It also changes authorization wiring and adds a static-analysis suppression, creating sensitive runtime and review-policy implications.

The feature is opt-in and macOS-only. The remaining issues are bounded: a possible setup hang, occasional corrupted non-ASCII text in Cua results, a stuck setup dialog on rare errors, and a banner that can stay visible too long. These are worth fixing, but they are not severe blockers.

Decode the proxy's stdio streams as UTF-8 before you split lines.

The stream encoding is not set, so each data chunk is a Buffer. buffer += chunk and input += chunk decode each chunk separately. A chunk boundary can split a multi-byte UTF-8 character. Each half then decodes to U+FFFD.

Cua results are large: they include screenshots and accessibility trees, so they arrive in many chunks. Any non-ASCII text in those results (app names, window titles, labels, user text) can be corrupted before it reaches the provider. The same issue applies to client requests on process.stdin.

To fix this, call setEncoding("utf8") on both streams. Node's StringDecoder then keeps a partial character until the next chunk arrives.

Add a timeout to the permissions status probe.

status calls cuaPermissions on every check. The setup dialog runs these checks repeatedly while it waits for grants. runner.run has no timeout here. Running the binary from CuaDriver.app relaunches it inside the app. If that relaunch stalls, serverCheckComputerAccess never returns, and the setup dialog stays stuck on its loading state. runAction returns yield* status, so every action RPC also stalls.

Add a short timeout. On timeout, return the existing unverified fallback, which orElseSucceed already supplies.

Reset pending in a finally block.

runAction calls setPending(null) only after await run(...) resolves. If run rejects, pending stays set. Then busy stays true, the dialog cannot close (Line 127), and the close button stays hidden (Line 130). runAtomCommand usually returns a Failure result instead of rejecting. A defect path can still reject, and the dialog has no other way to recover.

Superseded by a stack that ships computer use on macOS, Linux, and Windows together, instead of macOS only:

  1. #16527 hosts Cua Driver on every OS (bundled in desktop, downloaded by npx t3)
  2. #16528 attaches it to every provider session, including Codex, OpenCode 2, and Pi
  3. #16529 shows Cua calls as computer use, with app icons on every OS
  4. #16530 adds the setting and per-OS setup
  5. #16531 adds the floating live preview of the window the agent drives (from #10899)
  6. #16532 adds agent browser tabs on every OS (this PR's Chrome DevTools MCP half)

The per-thread Cua proxy from this PR is dropped. Theo is credited as co-author on the layers ported from here.

Closing in favor of the stack above, which covers everything here on macOS, Linux, and Windows. I checked #15006's diff against the stack before closing. The two pieces that were missing are now in it:

  • "Using your computer" banner with Stop in the composer, while a run is driving the computer: #16531.
  • Restore defaults now lists and resets Computer use (#16530) and Agent browser tabs (#16532).

Deliberately not carried over:

  • The per-thread Cua proxy that ended Cua's session at every turn end. Stop still ends the provider's turn, and Cua's own idle timeout hides the agent cursor.
  • User-run Cua installer and macOS grants for CuaDriver. The driver is now bundled in the desktop app (or downloaded by npx t3), and macOS grants go to T3 Code.
