Mobile foreground reconnects can wait for dead-socket teardown, repeat discovery work, and reload a shell snapshot that is already in memory. This rebuild keeps the original reconnect work, merges current main, and adapts it to the current route and shell-stream behavior.

Dead-session cleanup runs under the supervisor without delaying the next attempt. A reconnect that just started survives the following foreground notification. Relay descriptor discovery overlaps ticket creation, with compatibility checks using only fresh descriptors. Replacement shell sessions replay from the in-memory cursor; disk-only caches and server-version changes still require an authoritative load. Full snapshots supersede pending link fills while metadata-only refreshes preserve them.

Credit to @catfogtoad for the original implementation and measurements in #14098. The contributor's commits are retained. The old mobile timing measurements describe the original revision; this revision has not been benchmarked on a phone.

Verification at 27f02830:

  • 143/143 tests pass in five existing suites: authorization/layer, connection/resolver, connection/supervisor, rpc/session, and state/shell-sync. The original revision's 116 cases were reduced to 115 before integration; current main adds existing coverage. Overlapping cleanup cases and polling helpers were removed. The metadata-refresh regression extends the existing link-fill test; no new test file.
  • Scoped client-runtime typecheck, lint and formatting pass. Lint reports one existing accumulating-spread warning.
  • Negative controls: replacement shell cursor regresses from 40 to 20 without memory resume; fresh descriptor compatibility fails without the handoff; dead-socket cancellation stalls without the writer race. Separately disabling metadata-fill cancellation protection or its persistence guard fails the link-fill regression. Disabling the upgrade guard reuses cursor 40 instead of refreshing HTTP to cursor 20.
  • Headless Linux web smoke: close the isolated local WebSocket, deliver a foreground notification, and confirm generation 1 → 2, live shell at cursor 4 → 4, and zero shell HTTP reloads. Current-head trace. This is a functional smoke test, not a mobile or relay performance measurement. The visible layout does not change; test output and the trace show the reconnect behavior.

Not verified: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Electron desktop, or production relay reconnects. The read-only real-data seed could not migrate because its migration history differs from this checkout; the web smoke used isolated development state. No live user database was changed.

Two independent adversarial review rounds covered the complete diff. Round one caught the metadata-only snapshot race; it was fixed, along with shutdown telemetry ordering and refresh after server-version changes. Round two found no blocking bugs. CI on the published head and human approval remain separate gates. This PR is unmerged.

Implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol via Codex in T3 Code. Test reduction: GPT-6-Astra via Codex. Independent adversarial reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol.

📝 Walkthrough

The client runtime now returns environment descriptors through authorization and connection preparation, changes supervisor retry and release handling, ends pending RPC writes after transport loss, and resumes shell subscriptions from an in-memory cursor across replacement sessions.

Changes: Authorization descriptor flow

Layer / File(s)Summary
Descriptor authorization and concurrent fetch
packages/client-runtime/src/authorization/service.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/authorization/layer.test.ts
Bearer authorization returns a descriptor when it fetches one. DPoP authorization fetches the descriptor alongside the socket ticket. Tests separate descriptor responses from ordinary responses and cover a pending descriptor request.
Descriptor handoff to connection preparation
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/resolver.ts
Bearer, relay, and SSH broker results carry descriptors. Connection preparation uses a supplied descriptor when available and otherwise fetches one from the prepared HTTP base URL.

Connection runtime lifecycle

Layer / File(s)Summary
Connection retry and release lifecycle
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.test.ts
Recent connection attempts can continue through an application-active reconnect. If a retained attempt later fails, the retry ladder resets. Attempt scopes close in the supervisor scope, with tests covering retry timing and release completion.
RPC transport closure and stream cancellation
packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.test.ts, docs/internals/connection-runtime.md
Socket writes stop waiting after transport closure. A regression test covers cancelling a lifecycle stream while its socket is unopened. The documentation describes cancellation over the old socket during session replacement.
Shell snapshot resumption across sessions
packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell-sync.test.ts
Shell subscriptions can resume from the in-memory cursor on replacement sessions. The test expects cursor 40 without another HTTP snapshot load.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f79c6

Two narrow reconnect reliability and authorization-consistency issues remain for follow-up; the change is otherwise mergeable with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f79c6

Reconnects can proceed while an old connection is being cleaned up, and replacement connections reuse current metadata and synchronization cursors. Environment checks remain in place. No introduced security issue was established, but recovery coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The verified security-relevant exposure is reconnect processing and shell state for each configured environment using this shared runtime. State ownership is keyed to the supervisor's target environment; the inspected flow does not establish broader service or credential authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Remote metadata crossing into connection preparation is checked against the requested environment and orchestration protocol. Cached bearer metadata is not forwarded for compatibility evaluation. The initial WebSocket server configuration is also checked against the prepared connection's environment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Durable subscriptions select sessions through switchMap, and transport failures end the current subscription while awaiting replacement. Authorization failures are excluded from expected-failure retries. RPC socket retry is disabled, making transport closure terminal for that session.

Reuse the descriptor validated during DPoP token exchange.

exchangeDpopToken fetches and validates the descriptor for bootstrap.endpoint.httpBaseUrl, but getDpopToken stores only the resulting token. authorizeDpop then misses relayDescriptors and fetches the same descriptor again. Fiber.join waits for this request before authorization returns, so a slow response can delay initial connection preparation.

Cache the validated descriptor after token exchange, or carry it into authorizeDpop.

Note

The iPhone measurements establish the reconnect delay, and the tests cover individual paths. Could you explain which measured bottlenecks require the five-minute relay-descriptor cache and deferred provider refresh in addition to the dead-socket teardown/retry fix? Those changes also affect later authorization and usage freshness, so their necessity for this one problem is not clear from the bundled timings. Please provide that relationship under one problem per PR, and link any maintainer agreement on the broader reconnect policy. Leaving this open pending that explanation.

Thanks, that is a fair question. The honest answer is that the table does not isolate them.

The before/after table measured all four changes together (de251fc297 -> 6d47dee50b). Per-change phone data exists only for the first two commits, from earlier runs on the same iPhone and the same environment over T3 Connect:

The two figures below come from intermediate development builds (625156887e, fbc58356fa) that were later rewritten into the pushed commits and are not on the remote. Treat them as indicative; the trimmed PR will carry a fresh measurement.

  • Reconnect lifecycle (9c4a1db24c; measured as 625156887e). 180 s background: resume -> connected went from 1596 ms to 659 ms. 40 s background: 929 ms to 729–750 ms. The gain is the removed transport backoff. Before, the client sat about 700 ms in backoff failure=transport before it reconnected.
  • Dead-socket writes (f4c81b47bb; measured as fbc58356fa). connected -> thread list up to date went from 470–520 ms to 100–180 ms when the socket had died in the background. The 1 s RPC write timeout on the dead socket was the whole gap.

The relay descriptor cache (189a544b32, f7b8b7c47c) and the deferred provider usage refresh (6d47dee50b) were not measured in isolation. The remaining difference between those stage numbers and the final table is inside the run-to-run noise at n=2–3. The traces also argue against a measurable effect:

  • 9c4a1db24c already fetches the descriptor in parallel with the socket ticket. In the after traces the preparing stage (descriptor plus ticket) took 180–344 ms, against 242–371 ms before, with both the parallel fetch and the cache in play. I cannot separate the cache from the parallel fetch in those traces, which is exactly why I am not claiming the cache as a measured win.
  • The provider usage widget skips an environment it refreshed within the last five minutes (WIDGET_REFRESH_INTERVAL), so in back-to-back 40 s and 180 s cycles the refresh fired in few, if any, of the measured cycles. The table could not have captured the deferral. Its real target is the repeated full providerStatuses pushes (about 810 KB, 2–6 times) on returns after five or more minutes. That is a separate problem, and probably a server-side fix.

So I will split per the one-problem rule:

  1. This PR shrinks to 9c4a1db24c + f4c81b47bb, rebased on main, with the evidence above and a fresh two-commit measurement.
  2. The descriptor cache moves to its own PR with its own round-trip measurement, after the policy question below is settled.
  3. The deferred refresh is dropped from this PR. I will open an Ideas discussion on the reconnect policy (descriptor reuse lifetime, provider-status pushes, config transport) and link the maintainer decision from the follow-up PRs.

One note for the trimmed PR: 9c4a1db24c still touches authorization/service.ts and connection/resolver.ts, because the parallel descriptor fetch lives there. That commit does not reuse a descriptor across reconnects.

Synced from GitHub

The PR is now trimmed and rebased on main (8283b481a3). It holds two commits: the supervisor and session teardown fix, and the dead-socket write fix. The relay-descriptor cache and the deferred provider usage refresh are no longer in this PR.

One correction to my last comment. #14897 landed after it and owns the retry ladder now. This PR also had "losing a stable session retries at once". That conflicts with the jitter in #14897, so I removed it. That rule produced most of the 180 s resume -> connected gain I quoted (1596 ms -> 659 ms), so please disregard that figure for this revision. The dead-socket write figure (470-520 ms -> 100-180 ms) belongs to the second commit, which the rebase did not change.

The fresh before/after measurement of main against this branch is still owed. I removed the old table from the description, because it does not describe this revision.

Use a monotonic clock for the fresh-attempt window.

attemptStartedAt comes from Clock.currentTimeMillis, which is wall-clock time. The trigger here is a mobile resume, and devices often correct their wall clock right after they resume (NTP or carrier time sync). A backward correction makes the elapsed value negative or too small. In that case a stuck attempt that started before the suspension counts as fresh and is kept. It is not interrupted until CONNECTION_ESTABLISHMENT_TIMEOUT (15 seconds) expires. monitorConnectedLease already uses Clock.monotonicTimeNanos for this reason.

I am keeping the wall clock here, on purpose. This check must count the time the app spent suspended: an attempt that started before the suspension has to look old. A monotonic clock can stop while the device sleeps, so it would make that old attempt look fresh, which is the failure this finding describes.

The wall clock only fails if the clock steps backward by more than the background time, which is 10 s or more for a long resume. The mobile wakeup that decides "long resume" measures the background time with the wall clock too. monitorConnectedLease is different: its deadline runs only while the app is active.

I added a comment in f79c6e88f5 that states this.

@catfogtoad Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw this finding.

The fresh-attempt window must include time spent suspended. A monotonic clock that stops during device sleep would make a pre-suspension attempt look fresh. My comparison with monitorConnectedLease missed that distinction: its probe deadline serves a different purpose.

The added comment explains why Clock.currentTimeMillis is intentional. No clock change is needed.

5Learning: In packages/client-runtime/src/connection/supervisor.ts, waitForEstablishmentInterrupt intentionally uses Clock.currentTimeMillis for FRESH_ATTEMPT_WINDOW_MS. The elapsed time must include mobile suspension so pre-suspension connection attempts look old. A monotonic clock can exclude device sleep time and defeat this check. The mobile long-resume wakeup also measures background duration with wall-clock time. Do not infer that this check should use the monotonic clock used by monitorConnectedLease for active probe deadlines.

Keep the compatibility check current on bearer reconnects.

If a host changes its descriptor within the 10-second bearer cache window, brokeredDescriptor can contain the old protocol version. The resolver now skips its fresh fetch and passes that version to orchestrationProtocolCompatibilityError. A reconnect can then accept or reject the wrong protocol. Fetch a current descriptor before the compatibility check when the broker supplied a cached bearer descriptor.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @catfogtoad

Good catch, this was real. The resolver reused the descriptor from authorization, and on the bearer path that one can come from the 10-second cache. Fixed in f79c6e88f5: authorization now passes a descriptor on only when it fetched it in the same call. On a cache hit the resolver fetches a current one for the compatibility check, as on main. The existing bearer cache test now asserts this.

@catfogtoad Thanks for the fix. I verified that authorizeBearer returns descriptor: undefined on a cache hit. The resolver then fetches a current descriptor before the compatibility check. The bearer cache test asserts this behavior.

I inspected the code and test assertions. I did not run the tests.

🟡 Minor · Bind each DPoP descriptor to the requested environment. · service.ts:486-487

packages/client-runtime/src/authorization/service.ts:486-487 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Bind each DPoP descriptor to the requested environment.

Both DPoP success paths return a descriptor without checking descriptor.environmentId against input.expectedEnvironmentId. The connection resolver rejects this mismatch later, but authorizeDpop can still return an inconsistent authorization result to its callers.
