fix(web): screen readers can reach sidebar row actions#13962

Named sidebar row buttons hid nested row actions from screen readers. Each modern sidebar draft, card and compact row now has a native primary navigation button beside its independent actions. Accessible names keep the title first, followed by status and project, so identically named threads remain distinguishable.

The takeover preserves @akj’s sibling-control approach and original commits from #13962, simplifies primary-button markup, restores explicit draft keyboard menus and their row-position fallback, and prevents portaled menu clicks from transferring focus to the row. List semantics remain deliberate for NVDA list navigation.

Recording: keyboard focus and draft discard

Final-head draft keyboard menu (at the focused row):

Shift+F10 opens the draft menu beside the focused row

Verification: 184 focused tests pass (152 sidebar logic, 32 Chromium browser). Four PR helper cases were replaced by two behavior cases in the existing browser suite. Reverting production to main fails the nested-control regression; a zero-coordinate menu event fails before the fallback and passes afterward. Web typecheck, targeted lint/format and diff checks pass. Existing logic-suite lint retains three pre-existing unused-import warnings.

Two full-diff review rounds ran in parallel on Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol; round two found no code defects. The first found the portal focus transfer and potential loss of the existing draft keyboard shortcut; both were fixed. Native keyboard activation now carries modifiers into the existing selection behavior: Shift+Enter range-selects, and Ctrl/Cmd+Enter or Space toggles selection. Plain Enter/Space still opens the thread.

Live Chromium/Linux verification used isolated synthetic data: independent draft/thread action controls in the accessibility tree; Enter/Space and Tab; draft keyboard/pointer menus and zero-coordinate fallback; discard; Settle/Un-settle; Snooze/Wake; rename/cancel; pointer navigation; programmatic Ctrl-click selection; and drag reorder without row navigation. Before/after captures use matching data and a 1280×800 viewport, with the same temporary test-font workaround for this headless host.

Required human gate: VoiceOver in Safari and Chrome under both DOM order and Grouping items, including traversal into the list and its covered primary button. The corresponding review thread stays open. NVDA output, Safari default Tab behavior, native macOS/Windows/Electron menus, iOS and Android were not verified here. Check draft Shift+F10 and VO+Shift+M on macOS. Mobile and legacy sidebar are unchanged. Maintainer approval is still required; this PR is unmerged.

Contributor-reported native verification: Andrew reports NVDA and Windows keyboard-menu checks passing on this head, including separate row actions, a single Applications-key/Shift+F10 menu, and no portal focus jump. I did not repeat those native checks. VoiceOver in Safari/Chrome, Electron menus, macOS and iOS/Android still need human verification.

Implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol in Codex through T3 Code; tests: GPT-6-Astra; independent reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol.

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This production accessibility fix restructures sidebar rows around native primary buttons and changes list semantics and focus behavior. The unresolved VoiceOver/Safari navigation concern requires human verification because the automated tests do not cover that interaction mode.

#13959 requires native thread-opening buttons, sibling row actions, and list semantics. The reviewed summary reports those changes for draft and thread rows, and the prior source assessment confirms the controls sit as siblings in each list item. The updated accessible-name helper and tests cover the row name. VoiceOver checks are manual validation, not a coding requirement.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Distinguish primary buttons that open different rows.

If two drafts share a preview or two threads share a title, these buttons receive identical names even when they open items in different projects. The project name is outside the button, so it does not distinguish the buttons during button navigation. Include the project display name in each primary button’s name, as the search-result button already does. Keep the preview or title first for voice control. (w3.org)

@gabrielelpidio, you took the first pass at this in #13910, so I'd value your opinion on this version.

Instead of removing the row labels, each row now has its own native button that opens the thread, and Snooze, Settle, and the other actions sit beside it instead of inside it. That keeps the thread list a real list and gives NVDA's browse mode nothing to hide. It also avoids WebKit dropping everything inside a button from the accessibility tree, which is the VoiceOver concern behind #13491. The full reasoning is in #13959.

I've merged the latest main. I tested NVDA with Chrome before the merge, and the sidebar logic tests and web typecheck pass after it. VoiceOver is still untested, so if you can try it in Safari or Chrome, that would help most.

role="list" makes the thread container a VoiceOver interaction boundary, so Safari/VoiceOver users cannot traverse its row controls through ordinary linear navigation and must first enter the group. Keep this container presentational, or use a structure that does not introduce that boundary.

Keeping role="list" here is deliberate. Without it, NVDA doesn't announce the thread list, and its L and I quick-navigation keys skip the threads. That was half of the regression in #13959.

Whether the list is an interaction boundary depends on the VoiceOver user's web navigation setting. Per Apple's guide, lists need interaction under Grouping items but not under DOM order. Under Grouping items, entering a list is the expected way to move through it, as it is for any other list on the web.

The VoiceOver pass in Safari and Chrome, under both settings, is still the merge check for this PR. I'm leaving this thread open until that's done. If that pass shows the list gets in the way, we'll revisit it then.

Keyboard context-menu invocation opens the draft menu at the default coordinates instead of beside the focused row. The native contextmenu event has zero/default clientX/clientY when triggered by ContextMenu or Shift+F10, so preserve the focused row's bounding-rect fallback for that case.

The native `contextmenu` event has zero/default `clientX`/`clientY` when triggered by `ContextMenu` or `Shift+F10`, so preserve the focused row's bounding-rect fallback for that case.

I checked this in Chromium 149. With the row's button focused, both the Applications key and Shift+F10 fire contextmenu on that button with coordinates at the row's centre, not 0,0. The event then bubbles to the row's handler, so the menu opens on the draft. Thread rows already open their keyboard context menu this way on main, and drafts now match them. Leaving this as is.

Sorry, I'm unable to act on this request because you do not have permissions within this repository.

Restored the row bounding-rect fallback when both contextmenu coordinates are zero, and restored explicit ContextMenu / Shift+F10 handling for drafts. The existing Chromium test now covers a zero-coordinate event: it fails at x=0 before the fix and passes at the row position afterward. Final-head Linux browser verification also opens both keyboard menus beside the row. Fixed in 14fab44 and b2833d9. Native macOS and Windows menu behavior remains explicitly unverified in the PR body.

NVDA checks pass at b2833d96c7. Andrew tested by hand on Windows 11 with NVDA 2027.1 and Helium 0.19.4.1 (Chromium 155), using a web dev build seeded with real thread data:

  1. In browse mode, each sidebar thread row reads once, as title, status, project. Snooze, Settle and Discard can each be reached as a separate button.
  2. On a focused draft row, the Applications key opens exactly one menu, beside the row.
  3. Shift+F10 on a focused draft row also opens exactly one menu, beside the row.
  4. When a draft's menu is opened with the mouse, clicking an item in it doesn't move focus back to the row.

That covers the NVDA output and Windows Applications key items in the human checks.

Keeping the list semantics is the right call, but they leave one gap. The sidebar's sections aren't reachable from the keyboard the way they're visible on screen. Sighted users see Drafts, Pinned, Active, Working, Snoozed and Settled as separate groups. NVDA reads one long list, and the only way from the top to Settled is item by item, or button by button through every thread in between.

Proposal: add a level 2 heading for each section, inside the existing list.

  • Working, Snoozed, Settled: wrap the existing expand/collapse button in an h2. Its name always includes the count, for example "Settled, 12 threads", and the button still reports expanded or collapsed. The visible label doesn't change.
  • Drafts, Pinned, Active: these have no visible header, so give them screen-reader-only headings. Show each one only when its section has items.
  • Drag-only markers: hide the empty drag boundaries and drop placeholders from screen readers. The list's item count then covers only threads and section headings, and arrowing through it has no blank stops.

This keeps the visual design and the single list that dragging between sections depends on. Headings also don't add anything VoiceOver users have to enter, so it shouldn't make the Grouping items concern worse. I considered two other options. A separate list per section would mirror the visuals more closely, but it means reworking drag and drop and adds more lists to enter under VoiceOver. A tree view would put Snooze and Settle back inside the row, where screen readers can't reach them.

Tested: a local build of this branch with the change. With NVDA 2027.1 and Helium 0.19.4.1 (Chromium 155) on Windows 11, H and 2 move between sections and each heading reads its count. Enter on Settled toggles it and reports the new state. L finds one list with no blank items. A Drafts heading appears after leaving an unsent draft. A new Chromium browser test checks the heading names and the list's item count, and it fails without the change. VoiceOver is not tested.

The patch is about 50 lines on top of this branch, and I'm happy to share it.

updated the original branch at d60984e580, preserving @akj's commits and sibling native-button approach. merged current main without rebasing or force-pushing, resolved the sidebar extraction conflicts, and moved the fix into SidebarThreadRow and SidebarDraftBlock.

the diff against main is now four files: 140 additions and 47 deletions. kept main's accessible-name helper and search rows unchanged, and replaced the old full-sidebar test scaffolding with one behavior case in the existing browser test file. kept explicit list semantics, pointer focus, draft keyboard menus and their zero-coordinate fallback.

all 30 ci checks are green and git.cafe reports this head as mergeable. both independent code reviews approved it; no new bot findings were posted. the voiceover human gate below remains open.

verification passed:

  • blacksmith vp run check:changed HEAD: format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and 109 tests. HEAD was the main-equivalent merge tree while the fix was uncommitted; blacksmith's shallow checkout could not resolve the default merge base.
  • the new draft regression failed against main, then passed with the fix. no new test files.
  • real isolated linux web client in system chrome: native primary buttons with separate actions in the accessibility tree; Tab, Enter and Space; a single draft menu beside the row for Shift+F10, Context Menu and zero-coordinate events; keyboard discard; pointer selection toggling; rename/cancel; Settle/Un-settle and compact-row activation; Snooze/Wake.
  • two independent GPT-6.1-Sol code reviews approved this head with no findings. uploaded video playback and seeking passed in chrome.

still required: voiceover in safari and chrome, in both dom-order and grouping modes, including entering the list, activating rows and discovering sibling actions. linux cannot verify that human gate. native electron menus, macos/windows screen-reader output, mobile, and remote connection modes were not exercised in this run. the earlier contributor nvda report remains contributor verification, not a check i repeated.

#25877 supersedes this PR, so I'm closing it. Sidebar rows are now treeitems instead of role="button", and Tab from the focused row reaches that row's own actions (Settle, Discard draft, Wake, and so on). The problem this PR fixed, row actions hidden inside a named button, no longer exists on main. This PR's sibling-button list layout also conflicts with the new tree, so rebasing it would mean undoing #25877.

One piece didn't carry over: Shift+Enter range selection and Ctrl/Cmd+Enter toggle on a focused row. Main's row key handler opens the thread on Enter or Space and ignores modifiers. If that's wanted, I can propose it separately.

Thanks @juliusmarminge and @maria-rcks for taking this over, fixing the draft menus and focus handling, and keeping it current with main.
