Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/11571

Switching threads remounts the diff reader and loses its position. Keep a session-only position for each environment, thread and review scope, including the chosen branch base.

The reader saves a logical file/line anchor and viewport offset so wrapped, virtualized rows can settle without moving the reader to a different line. Lazy diffs reload the previously visible file set before restoring. Fresh timeline file reveals take priority, including repeated requests for the same file; collapse-all resets to the top. Missing reveal paths are treated as handled after loading finishes. A stale line anchor falls back to the file header.

Rebuilt from @Gigioxx's original #11631, preserving the contributor commits and merging main. The original module maps and pixel-only restoration were replaced to handle current panel callers, lazy files and wrapped rows.

Verification

  • PR tests: 0 → 1, in the existing diffRendering.test.ts. It exercises Pierre's real virtual diff geometry across changed row heights. 47 focused tests passed; web typecheck, scoped lint and formatting passed.
  • Linux headless client: Changes A → B → A returns to line 181 at 3600px; main returns to line 1 at 0. Both captures use the same 600-line diff, 1280×800 viewport, layout, wrap setting and temporary proof fonts (the browser had no usable system fonts).
  • A 21-file lazy fixture restored a sparse file outside the initial four: file-19.ts stayed at line 21 and the same viewport offset across repeated returns despite changed estimated pixel heights.
  • Turn scope restores its saved position when reselected after returning. Existing navigation deliberately selects Changes on thread entry. Fresh and repeated same-file reveals were driven through the same store action used by the timeline; collapse/expand-all returned to the top.
  • Shrinking an added file from 800 to 20 lines while on thread B invalidated A’s saved line 201. The reader recovered to a clamped file-header target, saved a new valid anchor and restored it on the next return.
  • Known limit: a viewport inside the final wrapped line can use a pixel fallback and shift by that line’s measured height change.
  • Web verified locally. Desktop shares this panel but Electron, macOS, Windows/WSL, remote/relay/tunnel connections, iOS and Android were not run. Mobile does not use this component.

Before — main resets after the thread round trip

Before: thread A returns to line 1

After — reader resumes at line 181

After: thread A returns to line 181

Before recording · After recording

Four independent review rounds with Claude Opus and Codex Sol. Findings about sparse lazy files, user scroll/collapse priority, missing reveal paths and deleted line anchors were fixed; the final round found no blockers. Build, lint and test jobs passed on the published head. Macroscope correctness now passes; its approvability check remains neutral and requests human approval because the restoration logic spans virtualized rendering and lazy loading. That approval remains outstanding. The web suite passed after one rerun of an unrelated keyboard-focus test (the failing test does not mount DiffPanel). Two new bot findings were checked against compiler output, live proof and production callers, then answered as false positives; see the review threads.

Implementation: Codex gpt-6.1-sol/high in T3 Code; tests: Codex gpt-6-astra/high; adversarial reviews: Claude claude-opus-5-5 and Codex gpt-6-sol.

Switching back to a previously visited thread jumps to its selected file instead of restoring the thread's saved scroll position. handledRevealRef stores only one reveal key, so visiting another scope overwrites A's key and causes A's reveal effect to call scrollTo after restoration. Track handled reveals per collapseScopeKey so each scope can suppress its own repeat reveal.

Valid. Handled reveals are now tracked per review scope in a module-level map alongside the saved offsets, so revealing a file in another thread no longer clears this thread's suppression. Fixed in e7e4d7c.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes the existing production diff viewer with substantial cross-component state, virtualization-aware anchor restoration, and automatic lazy-file loading. Although focused tests cover the new geometry, the runtime behavior and implementation complexity exceed a small isolated fix.

The diff view records scroll positions by review scope and restores them when the scope remounts. Reveal handling avoids replacing an existing saved position. AnnotatableCodeView forwards scroll events to DiffPanel.

Explanation

The changes satisfy #11571. DiffPanel.tsx stores scroll offsets by environment, thread, and review scope. It restores the offset when the scope remounts and preserves the saved offset for the same file-reveal request. AnnotatableCodeView forwards onScroll to the diff view. The implementation covers thread and turn or Git scope changes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep handled reveal state per review scope.

handledRevealRef retains only the most recent scope. If scope A has a saved offset, the user reveals a file in scope B, then returns to scope A with the same request ID, Line 487 does not match. Line 494 then scrolls to the file header after restoration and replaces scope A’s saved offset.

Store the handled reveal key per collapseScopeKey. Retain that state for at least as long as diffScrollTopByScopeKey.

✅ Addressed in commit e7e4d7c

Valid. Handled reveals are now tracked per review scope in a module-level map alongside the saved offsets, so revealing a file in another thread no longer clears this thread's suppression. Fixed in e7e4d7c.

@Gigioxx, thanks for the fix. The scope-keyed handledDiffRevealByScopeKey preserves reveal suppression independently for each review scope.

Which supplied image or recording shows the unfixed thread-switch roundtrip returning to offset zero? I could identify the restored positions in this PR's recording, while the baseline evidence linked through #8759 and #8826 shows switching right-panel tabs within one thread. Please identify the matching before evidence or add a before/after comparison of this thread-switch case so verification covers the behavior being changed.

🟢 Low src/diffPanelStore.ts:27

Deleting a thread leaves its viewStateByThreadKey entry resident, so removed threads accumulate loadedFilePaths and scroll state, and reusing the same scoped thread key restores stale position. removeThread and its early-return guard do not handle this new map; remove the entry there alongside the other per-thread maps.

removeThread has no production callers in the diff-panel store on main or this head (repository-wide source search); it is an existing unused API, so adding a cleanup branch there would not change deletion behavior. An earlier review explicitly removed that dead cleanup and its map-write test. The new view state is session-only and excluded from persisted state. A real lifecycle eviction policy would need to cover the existing per-thread maps together; that is outside this focused scroll-restoration fix.

Mounting AnnotatableCodeView repeatedly updates DiffPanel until React hits the maximum update-depth guard, crashing the panel instead of restoring its scroll position. setCodeView gets a new identity on every render, so React detaches and reattaches the ref, and each attachment stores a fresh state object; stabilize the callback with useStableCallback.

The production web build enables the React Compiler, which memoizes this callback by viewerKey. Both independent reviewers checked the compiled ref identity; the final head also passed repeated live A → B → A mounts, lazy restores, collapse remounts and stale-line recovery without an update-depth error. The keyed viewer wrapper prevents effects from acting on the previous destroyed instance. Adding useStableCallback would retain the old ref attachment when viewerKey changes, rather than preserving the compiler’s key-dependent lifecycle. No code change is needed for this finding.
