fix(web): make message link context menus usable with screen readers#10391

Opening a message link's context menu can leave NVDA outside its options on Windows.

Use T3's existing in-page menu component for message links. Focus starts on the first option and returns to the link on Escape or Shift+Tab. Tab closes the menu and moves on to the next control after the link. Links keep their normal announcements.

Fixes #10390.

Tested repeated openings with NVDA in the isolated desktop app. Automated checks covered initial focus, arrow navigation, Escape, and copying both link types. A mounted-menu test covers Tab, Shift+Tab, and Escape. On the latest head (10ddc6d, merged with current main), the link menu and ChatMarkdown permission tests pass in headless Chromium, and web lint and typecheck pass.

Before and after

Windows desktop app (Electron 44.4.5), right-clicking the same link in a test thread. Before is main at 3a4d118. After is this branch at 10ddc6d, which is main at 16918b5 plus this PR's changes; the commits between those two main revisions only touch mobile, lint rules, and docs. Read over DevTools: on main, focus stays on the link while the native menu is open. On this branch, focus moves to "Open in integrated browser", and Escape returns it to the link.

Before: Windows' native menu opens with no item selected. After: T3's in-page menu opens with its first item focused.

Full windows

Before: the whole app window on main, with the native menu open at the link

After: the whole app window on this branch, with the in-page menu open at the link and its first item focused

Built with GPT-6 in Codex. The Tab fix is from Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

Note

Keep message link menu focus in the page for MarkdownFileLink and MarkdownAnchor

  • Adds useMessageLinkMenu hook in useMessageLinkMenu.tsx that renders an in-tree menu at the pointer position, returns the selected item asynchronously, and restores focus to the triggering link element when the menu closes
  • Updates MarkdownFileLink in ChatMarkdown.tsx to use the hook instead of the local API context-menu service, passing the triggering link or button element for focus restoration
  • Updates MarkdownAnchor to use the hook for external-link context menus, including links rendered with pull-request previews, so the originating anchor is the final focus target
  • Behavioral Change: file-link and external-link context menus now render as in-tree popups rather than via the API context-menu service; focus moves to the first menu item on open and back to the trigger link on close

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained accessibility bug fix that keeps existing message-link menu actions while moving focus into an in-page menu and restoring it to the originating link. The implementation is localized to ChatMarkdown and a small reusable hook, without schema, configuration, deployment, or other sensitive changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Message link context menus now use a shared in-page menu hook. File links and markdown anchors pass their triggers to the hook and render the menu with the link content. The hook manages positioning, focus restoration, selections, and cleanup.

Handle keyboard context-menu coordinates for external links.

When a keyboard context-menu event supplies (0, 0), showExternalLinkContextMenu forwards that position to useMessageLinkMenu, so the popup can open at the viewport origin. Use the trigger bounds as the fallback. Add a regression test.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @akj

Fixed in 75c727756. I moved the existing zero-coordinate fallback into useMessageLinkMenu and removed it from the file-link caller, so external links and file links use the same positioning rule.

The regression test first returned an anchor at 0, 0 instead of the trigger's lower-left corner. It now passes, including mouse coordinates with either axis at zero. The 70 focused tests and web typecheck passed. This verifies the hook's anchor geometry; I did not run a new browser or NVDA session.

@akj, confirmed. The shared useMessageLinkMenu fallback now handles (0, 0) for both external links and file links. The regression coverage also preserves valid pointer positions when only one coordinate is zero.

The reported focused tests and web typecheck support the fix. Browser and NVDA validation remains outside this verification.

5Learning: In `apps/web/src/components/chat/useMessageLinkMenu.tsx`, `useMessageLinkMenu` is the shared context-menu hook for both file links and external message links. When `position.x` and `position.y` are both zero, it anchors the menu to `trigger.getBoundingClientRect().left` and `.bottom`. The positioning test in `apps/web/src/components/chat/useMessageLinkMenu.test.tsx` covers this fallback and preserves positions where only one coordinate is zero.

@coderabbitai The positioning warning in the summary is stale. Commit 75c727756 moved the zero-coordinate fallback into useMessageLinkMenu, which both external links and file links call. The regression test failed before that change and now verifies the trigger's lower-left corner instead of the viewport origin. The current head includes that fix. Please update the summary to reflect the resolved finding.

I'm leaving the docstring-coverage warning unchanged. The hook already documents its accessibility constraint; the newly added TestLinkMenu component only mounts that hook for its positioning tests. A docstring to meet a percentage target would repeat the test code, contrary to AGENTS.md's guidance.

@akj I verified the current head.

useMessageLinkMenu now applies the zero-coordinate fallback for both link types. When both coordinates are zero, it anchors the menu at the triggering link’s lower-left corner. The regression test verifies this behavior and preserves valid positions where only one coordinate is zero.

The docstring-coverage warning remains unchanged. TestLinkMenu only mounts the hook for the positioning test. An additional docstring would repeat information that the test code already provides and would not follow the AGENTS.md documentation guidance.

@akj I will regenerate the summary.

The updated summary must state that useMessageLinkMenu handles the zero-coordinate fallback for both external links and file links. It must state that the regression test verifies the triggering link’s lower-left corner. It must not report this behavior as an unresolved warning.

The docstring-coverage warning remains unchanged. TestLinkMenu only mounts the already documented hook for positioning tests.

The screenshot and recording show the new in-page menus, but neither provides the original native-menu view for comparison. This UI replacement still needs the before/after evidence required by verification. Please add a baseline capture alongside the supplied fixed-menu evidence, identify the tested builds, then request reconsideration.

Synced from GitHub

@juliusmarminge, I've added the baseline capture you asked for, so I'd like to ask you to reconsider this PR.

Before: on main, right-clicking a message link opens Windows' native menu with no item selected. After: this branch opens T3's in-page menu at the same spot with its first item focused.

Both captures are from the Windows desktop app (Electron 44.4.2), with the menu opened by right-clicking the same link in a test thread:

  • Before: main at 31a9da1.
  • After: this branch at 5fa20fe, which is that same main plus this PR's three web files.

The menus look alike on purpose: same items, same place. On main it's Windows' native menu, which can leave NVDA outside its options. With this PR it's T3's in-page menu, with focus already on the first item. Nothing visible changes on the web, where browsers already got the in-page menu.

I've also merged the latest main. Full-window captures are in the description.
