Stop now starts the pending-work repair detached, so slow lookups no longer
hold the thread's command lane and closing the thread mid-lookup cancels only
the repair, not an accepted Stop. The saved-cache repair also follows a
completion event that overtakes a running, missing or timed-out lookup reply.
