Problem

No production relay deploy has succeeded since #26833 moved alchemy to beta.85. Every deploy hangs at "Computing plan" until the 15-minute job timeout, so prod relay is still running 5b9731ced.

Relay deploy

Two beta.85 bugs combine:

  • drizzle-kit can't read an absolute out (alchemy-run/alchemy#2980). beta.85 runs drizzle-kit in-process with an absolute scratch folder, and drizzle-kit reads snapshots as `./${path}`, so the Drizzle.Schema diff fails with ENOENT.
  • A failed Artifacts.cached effect hangs later callers (alchemy-run/alchemy#2981). An existing schema is diffed twice during plan. The second diff waits on a Deferred the failed first one never settles, and everything downstream (database, role, Hyperdrive, the Api Worker) waits with it.

Locally, an empty-state plan diffs the schema only once, so the error surfaced instead of the hang. Against prod, alchemy plan stalled at 19/26 · Api +6.

The fix is two pnpm patches on beta.85, each linked to its upstream issue in pnpm-workspace.yaml:

  • @alchemy.run/drizzle: pass drizzle-kit a cwd-relative out. Covers plan and apply.
  • alchemy: Artifacts.cached settles its waiters on failure too, so a future failure errors instead of hanging.

Downgrading is not an option. The first beta.85 deploy migrated the prod Cloudflare state store from v7 to v8, and alchemy warns that running an older version against a v8 store risks losing its encryption key.

Verification

  • Local alchemy plan of the relay stack (in-memory state, dummy credentials): the drizzle ENOENT is gone, and only the expected auth errors remain. No files are written under migrations/.
  • A script confirms a second Artifacts.cached caller now gets the failure instead of hanging.
  • vp run check:changed passes, including the unused-patch check.
  • Not yet verified: alchemy plan --stage prod on a machine with prod credentials. Run it before merging; merging triggers the prod deploy.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The patches address deployment-plan hangs and drizzle-kit snapshot paths, with focused regression tests. The new test file disables an Effect static-analysis diagnostic at line 1, requiring human review of that suppression.

Walkthrough

Two dependency patches change how drizzle-kit receives output paths and how cached settles waiting callers after effect completion. The workspace registers both patches for their specified dependency versions.

Changes: Dependency patch updates

Layer / File(s)Summary
Normalize drizzle output path
patches/@alchemy.run__drizzle@2.0.0-beta.85.patch, pnpm-workspace.yaml, infra/relay/src/alchemyPatches.test.ts
The drizzle-kit wrapper passes an output path relative to the current working directory, or "." when the relative path is empty. The workspace registers the patch. A test checks schema diffing with identical old and new props.
Settle cached effects with exit status
patches/alchemy@2.0.0-beta.85.patch, infra/relay/src/alchemyPatches.test.ts
cached settles its shared deferred with either the successful value or failure. It caches the result only after successful completion. A test checks that both callers receive the failure.

Add a regression test for concurrent Artifacts.cached callers.

The PR changes cached so waiting callers receive a failed effect's exit. No committed test covers this path. The ad hoc script is not part of the change, so a later change can reintroduce the hang without a failing test.

Add one focused test. It should hold the first cached effect pending, start a second caller, and then fail the effect. Assert that both callers receive the failure. Await the Deferred that marks each milestone. Do not use sleeps or polling.

The repository guidelines require a failing test for a state or concurrency bug fix before the fix. They also require focused tests for backend behavior changes.

Requested test scenario
  1. Start the first Artifacts.cached caller and hold its effect pending on a Deferred.
  2. Start a second caller for the same key.
  3. Fail the underlying effect.
  4. Assert that the first and second callers both fail with the same error.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for adding the regression tests and reporting the results with and without the patches.

I could not verify the tests: the sandbox checkout lacks infra/relay/src/alchemyPatches.test.ts and commit 70e56d09989. Please retry verification once that commit is available to the review checkout. This finding remains unverified.

You are interacting with an AI system.

The test is in infra/relay/src/alchemyPatches.test.ts at the PR head 70e56d09989 (the sibling thread verified that file at this commit). Resolving: the remaining gap is the review sandbox's checkout, not the change.

@juliusmarminge Understood. I withdraw the request to retain these tests in t3code. For these temporary patches, upstream regression coverage is the appropriate scope. Your reported production alchemy plan provides deployment verification; I have not independently verified that run.

@juliusmarminge You’re right. The sandbox’s missing commit did not establish that the test was missing from the PR. I should have separated that verification limit from the change itself.

Given the later scope clarification in this thread, my request to retain these temporary-patch tests remains withdrawn.

Add a regression test for an existing migration snapshot.

The reported local plan is not a checked-in regression test. The reviewed commit adds no test for this patch. (github.com) Add a focused test that plans against an existing migration snapshot and fails without the path conversion.

As per coding guidelines: “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.”

@juliusmarminge Verified the tests in 70e56d09989, the current PR head. The Drizzle.Schema test uses an absolute output path and the relay’s existing migrations. The Artifacts.cached test checks that both callers receive the failure.

This addresses the regression-test request. I inspected the source but did not run the tests.

@juliusmarminge Understood. I withdraw the request for repository-local regression tests for these temporary dependency patches. Upstream is the appropriate place for coverage of these dependency internals. Your reported production alchemy plan verification addresses the deployment check.
