server.getUsageSummary on a fresh install measured p50 8.6s and p95 34s on cups. A CPU profile of a cold 30-day scan showed almost all of the time was server main-thread JS: parseClaudeLine/JSON.parse, the Codex marker regex, Buffer work, and GC. While a scan ran, every other request competed with it for the event loop.

Change

  • The new UsageTranscriptParser service sends each directory's cache misses to t3 __usage-transcripts child processes. This is a bin.ts fast path, the same pattern as __document-text, so it works from source, in the npm bundle, in desktop (ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE), and in the single executable. A worker_threads script can't load inside the single-file executable bundle.
  • The child prints one [index, TranscriptParseResult] JSON line per file as it finishes, so the server decodes in small slices instead of one 100 MB blob. Measured on the real data: JSON for 292k records decodes in 424 ms, while structuredClone of the same data takes 999 ms. That rules out postMessage as a cheaper return path.
  • Batches under 8 MiB of unread bytes (the usual warm rescans of a few grown files) stay in process, because a spawn costs more than they do. Batches of 64 MiB or more are split across two children so cold scans use two cores. A Semaphore caps it at two children in total.
  • If a child fails, or doesn't report some files, those files fall back to in-process parsing. The per-file cache entries, resume positions, and dedupe logic in UsageService are unchanged. Planning and merging were split out of readFileRecords so a directory's misses go to the parser as one batch.
  • usageTranscriptFormats.ts lists the transcript formats directly, because the child would need 3.3s to import the full driver registry. A test asserts that it matches every built-in transcript driver.

Before / after

Read-only probe on cups (16 cores, load ~5) against real ~/.claude/projects + ~/.codex/{sessions,archived_sessions}: 30-day window, 3,779 files, 292k records, cold cache. Each line is one run.

wallmain-thread busy (ELU)max event-loop gapserver heap
in-process (before)10.3–12.7 s10.2–12.7 s (0.96–0.99)109–131 ms149–162 MB
subprocess (after)7.8–10.9 s1.0–1.6 s (0.13–0.15)32–40 ms145–155 MB

Event-loop delay p99 was already only ~20 ms in process, because the reader yields per chunk. What this PR fixes is that a cold scan used to take nearly all of the server's main-thread time for 10+ seconds, and now takes about a tenth of it.

Tests

UsageService.test.ts gains:

  • a test that runs a Claude + Codex fixture (plain and zstd rollouts) through the subprocess and in-process parsers, then appends to the files to cover resume and an unterminated tail. It asserts that the summaries and the persisted scan-cache files are byte-identical. A wrapped spawner also asserts that real child output was consumed in each subprocess scan, so a silent fallback to in-process parsing can't pass for parity.
  • the registry drift check described above.

The existing tests run on the in-process layer.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 6815f4e

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Large usage-transcript scans now run in bounded local subprocesses, while small scans and fallback parsing remain in process. Existing cache and aggregation handling is preserved, with no new external data destination or product-default change.

Walkthrough

Transcript reads now use a parser service that supports in-process and child-process parsing. UsageService plans reads, submits cache misses for parsing, and applies results in file-walk order.

The parser maps provider kinds to transcript formats and supports in-process and child-process parsing. The worker processes JSON requests and returns indexed results. The __usage-transcripts command dispatches to the worker.
UsageService integration
apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts, apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.test.ts
UsageService separates read planning from result application, sends parse requests through the parser service, and applies results in file-walk order. Server wiring provides the parser. Tests compare in-process and subprocess summaries and cache contents.

Observe a consumed child result, not only a spawn.

The real worker writes a protocol result only after it dispatches and parses a request. A spawn counter alone does not prove that this happened. The parity test can still pass when the parser falls back to parseInProcess.

Wrap the real child handle to observe a valid protocol result, or add a narrow test observation after the parent assigns results[index]. Assert that at least one result is consumed during each subprocess scan. This uses the real child and parser and does not mock parsing.

Nitpick Assert a child result for each request sent to the child.

583-583: External image Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert a child result for each request sent to the child.

The childOutputBytes > 0 check passes when the child reports only some files. UsageTranscriptParser.parse then parses each unreported file in process, and the test cannot detect that. A regression in the compressed Codex fixture or a resumed fixture could go unnoticed. Count the per-file results the child reports, and assert that every request sent to the child produced one. This matches the test's own comment that a silent in-process fallback should not pass for parity.

Pass the TypeScript flag to source transcript children.

When the source server runs on Node 22.16 or 22.17, the transcript child receives bin.ts without --experimental-strip-types. The child can exit before producing results. The parser then falls back to main-process parsing, so large scans lose the intended performance improvement, and the new parity test fails because it receives no child result.

Assert that parsing did not fall back in process.

A child line such as [] increments childResultLines, but the parser ignores it and parses that file in process. The parity assertion can then pass despite the fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Also assert that the parent did not open the requested transcript files during the subprocess scan.

As per path instructions, “Test behavior that can regress.”

Leaving this as is. The only writer on that pipe is our own usageTranscriptWorker.ts, which emits exactly one [index, result] line per request; the test now pins that every request sent to the child comes back as a line (a dropped file fails with "expected 1 to equal 3"). Guarding against a hypothetical malformed line from our own worker would need file-access instrumentation of the parent, which is more test machinery than the risk warrants.

@juliusmarminge Understood. The line-count assertion catches dropped worker output, and the parity checks cover summaries and cache entries. My hypothetical malformed-line case does not justify requiring parent file-access instrumentation here. I withdraw this suggestion.

Re the outside-diff finding "Pass the TypeScript flag to source transcript children" (UsageTranscriptParser.ts 74-84): not needed. The .ts entry is only used when running from source, and the repo pins Node 26.12.1 for that (root package.json engines), which strips types by default. Published builds run bin.mjs, where the ^22.16 engine range applies. This matches the existing __document-text child in DocumentText.ts:68, which spawns the same way.
