Problem

Every time a PDF preview loads, pdf.js starts a new Web Worker and compiles its 1.3 MB worker script. It then throws the worker away when the document closes. The preview reloads the document whenever the agent changes the file, when you retry, and when the preview remounts, so each reload pays that startup again. Locally that is 180–350 ms per load, and much more on a busy machine.

It also makes AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx › "keeps workspace PDF scroll and zoom after reloads" flaky on main CI. That test opens the PDF five times. In CI runs 41522237727 and 41519217914 it used up the whole 15 s test timeout (failing at 15.0 s on a click with 381 ms / 740 ms left) without any single step hanging.

Change

openPdf now creates one PDFWorker lazily and passes it to getDocument as worker, so every PDF reuses the same worker thread. pdf.js routes each document over that worker by document id. When the caller supplies the worker, loadingTask.destroy() does not terminate it: pdf.js only destroys a worker it created itself.

No new failure mode: pdf.js already disables real workers for the whole page after one fails to load (static PDFWorker.#isWorkerDisabled and a cached fake-worker promise).

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix (6 non-test lines in one file), so there is no prior issue. It removes repeated work on a hot path, and the measurements below show the gain. It is also the root cause of a recurring main-CI flake. It fixes the flake by making the code faster, not by adding test timeouts or retries.

Overlap search: no PR or issue touches the pdf.js worker setup. Closest: #28336 (rejected PDF responses release their bodies; it changes readBoundedDocument, not the worker) and #25699 (worked around the worker's dev-server cost only in PdfViewer.browser.test.tsx).

Verification

  • Extended the existing reload test: after the first load it spies on window.Worker and asserts that none of the four later reloads constructs one.
    • On main: AssertionError: expected "Worker" to not be called at all, but actually been called 4 times
    • With fix: vp test run src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx src/components/files/PdfViewer.browser.test.tsx, 2 files, 135/135 passed.
  • Timing, measured locally around loadingTask.promise: 180–350 ms per load on main, 0–5 ms after the first load with the fix. Run inside the full file, "keeps workspace PDF scroll and zoom after reloads" went from 3.2–3.8 s to ~2.1 s, and "clamps workspace PDF scroll when pages shrink or disappear" from 1.6–2.1 s to ~0.9 s.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests and react compiler all pass.
  • Not checked: CI timing under contention (I can't rerun main CI), and the production build in a real client. Nothing visible changes.

Do not retain a PDFWorker after destroying its loading task.

PdfViewer destroys the current task during every source or revision cleanup. In pdfjs-dist 6.4.299, that also destroys the supplied PDFWorker. The module cache then passes the terminated worker to the next getDocument call, so a later reload can fail or remain stale. Clear the cached worker whenever task-level destruction is required, or change cleanup so a shared worker remains alive.

The post-render window.Worker spy does not prove worker liveness. A destroyed cached worker also produces zero new window.Worker calls. The existing "Updated budget" assertion does exercise visible reload success, but it does not directly enforce the worker lifetime contract.

Not a real issue. Destroying the loading task does not destroy a PDFWorker that the caller passes in, so the cached worker stays alive across reloads.

pdf.js v6.4.299, src/display/api.js:

  • L247: let worker = src.worker instanceof PDFWorker ? src.worker : null;
  • L350-357: task._worker = worker is set only inside if (!worker) { worker = PDFWorker.create(...) }, so only for a worker that pdf.js created itself.
  • L586: PDFDocumentLoadingTask.destroy() calls this._worker?.destroy(). For our caller-supplied worker, _worker is null, so nothing happens.

On the worker side, the transport's Terminate message only tears down that document's handler. In src/core/worker.js, L1052-1076 is registered on the per-document MessageHandler built in createDocumentHandler (L137). The GetDocRequest listener on the port (L89) stays registered, so the next getDocument on the same worker works.

So a caller-supplied worker lives until the caller destroys it. PdfViewer only calls task.destroy() and never touches the worker.

The existing test runs this exact path. It reloads after cleanup, which destroys the previous task, and then requires the new revision ("Updated budget") to render. A terminated worker would fail that load with Worker was destroyed. AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx and PdfViewer.browser.test.tsx pass locally on this head (2 files, 135 tests).

@saphid You are correct. I checked the PDF.js v6.4.299 source and withdraw this finding.

getDocument assigns task._worker only when it creates the worker itself. PDFDocumentLoadingTask.destroy() therefore does not destroy the caller-supplied PDFWorker. The Terminate handler also destroys only the per-document handler, leaving the shared worker available for later loads.

I incorrectly treated task ownership and caller ownership as equivalent. No lifecycle change is needed for this finding.

Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of @tris203

I hit the same flake separately and arrived at the same fix, so here's evidence under contention to fill the "CI timing under contention" gap. I ran only the "keeps workspace PDF scroll and zoom after reloads" test, pinned to one CPU (taskset -c 0) and sharing it with N busy-loop processes:

LoadCodeRunsResultTest time
1 CPU, 0 hogsmain3pass7.1 s (each reload ≈ 780 ms)
1 CPU, 0 hogsshared worker1pass4.3 s (each reload ≈ 30 ms)
1 CPU, 3 hogsmain55/5 fail≥15 s, out of time on the last reloads (4 at line 2573, 1 at the overall test timeout)
1 CPU, 3 hogsshared worker1010/10 pass10.3–11.2 s
1 CPU, 4 hogsshared worker55/5 pass12.9–13.1 s

With per-step timing on one CPU, getDocument took 290–750 ms per load on main and 1–5 ms after the first load with a shared worker. No other step took more than ~140 ms, so worker startup is the whole cause.

One trade-off to note: the viewer's 30 s load timeout used to end that document's own worker. Now it only cancels the document. pdf.js PDFWorker.destroy() doesn't fail other documents using the worker (their requests just hang), so stopping the shared worker on timeout would be worse. I think leaving it as is is right.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at 4668115675e2a18fc0dbca657a608d1df2afbdf5 on this linux vm. reproduced repeated worker creation first on github/main (71646e031a). used repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome, one background dev server at a time, and task-isolated app state.

chrome normally bypasses this code with its native pdf viewer. configured its real plugins.always_open_pdf_externally preference and confirmed navigator.pdfViewerEnabled === false and the app's pdf.js canvases. created a project for a real git repo through the app. real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns generated and revised the pdf files; no mocked responses or provider.

  • initial open, three close/reopen cycles, and one live codex file revision: main created 5 workers and terminated 4; this head created 1 worker and kept it alive. instrumentation forwarded constructor and terminate calls to the real worker.
  • revised text rendered while retaining page 2 of 3, 90% zoom, scrollTop=729, and scrollLeft=0.
  • search found and highlighted Budget beta; a second pdf rendered; malformed pdf and retry showed the expected error; returning to the valid pdf rendered successfully with the same worker. no browser page errors.
  • remote blacksmith check: vp test run src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx src/components/files/PdfViewer.browser.test.tsx from apps/web: 135 tests passed across 2 files. installed the missing playwright browser on the remote worker before the successful run. existing ci has 31 successful checks. no code changes or pushes.
