fix(server): token telemetry counts each request once and only confirmed models#29001
Our token reports could not compare models fairly. provider.turn.completed counts one provider turn, so a single request with a Codex goal continuation, a steer, or native subagents became several rows. Native subagent turns carried the parent's model label, every row claimed mixedModels: false without checking, a local command like Claude's /compact looked like a model call with zero output, and an OpenCode turn with a step that reported no tokens still counted as complete. Raw model names from user-configured providers could also reach analytics.
This keeps provider.turn.completed for existing readers and fixes what it says:
- One summary per request. New
provider.request.completedis built in the server from the same terminal turns, keyed by run and turn id. Continuations, steering restarts and replayed events count once. Native child usage is summed separately. A child still running at settlement setschildrenRunningand is never added later. Restart continuations setlifecycleObserved: false. - Origin and segment.
requestKind(user,agent,scheduled,t3_child,provider_continuation,system) tells people from automation.segmentandchildKindsay what started each turn. - Selected vs observed models.
model/effortstay the selection.observedModel/mixedModelsappear only when the provider reported the model: Codex thread settings and reroutes (per turn), Claude root messages, and OpenCode steps. Labels come from the bundled model manifest, or the Cursor and Grok catalogs. Efforts come from a closed list. Custom and local names are never sent. - Coverage.
reportVersion: 2,usageReported(unsupported vs missing),localCommand, andpartialfor an OpenCode step with no counters. - Claude child and compaction usage.
otherInputTokens/otherOutputTokenscome from growth in Claude's per-processmodelUsageledger beyond the root. A ledger that goes backwards or is empty leaves them unknown.
Docs: docs/internals/product-analytics.md now holds the interpretation guide and the chart contract. docs/user/telemetry.md reflects the new fields.
Handoff for chart and warehouse owners. The public chart and the warehouse queries are owned outside this repo. They should label the metric "output tokens per measured provider completion". They should show eligible and measured counts by harness, origin and status, and compare on observedModel with reportVersion 2. They should count requests from provider.request.completed with requestKind: "user". Old rows keep missing fields unknown. A missing origin is never a person. Historical counters are not backfilled, and there is no per-task quality signal.
Coverage limits. A Stop that lands while a steering restart is starting ends that run without a summary (documented). Settling from committed run transitions is the follow-up. Runs that recovery ends after a restart have no summary. Claude's ledger can attribute background work that ends between turns to the next turn. The OpenCode v1, ACP, Muse, Grok and Pi adapters only gain usageReported.
Proof. Replay fixtures run the real adapters:
- Codex root 69 tokens with a confirmed model, and the child's 6 tokens with no inherited label.
- Claude nested subagents: root 236, plus 335 ledger tokens beyond it.
- Claude resumed session not recounted.
/compactflagged as a local command. - OpenCode missing-step turn reported as partial.
- Codex reroute applies to its own turn only.
Each of these fails on the old provider code. Unit tests cover exactly-once accounting, late children, steering, zero vs absent counts, and the whole serialized payload. A dev server with telemetry pointed at a local capture endpoint recorded both events for a Replay turn and a real Claude Sonnet turn: complete, model confirmed, 1,300/12 ledger tokens beyond the root, and no ids, prompts or raw model names. That run also caught a <synthetic> error frame being counted as a model, which is fixed here.
Reviewed with sol-loop: 3 passes with GPT-6.1 Sol. Sol verdict: changes requested on one rare path, the steering-restart Stop gap above.

Mark usage partial when the stream misses step events.
If the stream disconnects after one counted step, later steps can finish before reconnection. backfill restores message content but not their step or token events, and reconcile can complete the turn. Here, the earlier counters still match, so telemetry reports an incomplete token total as complete. Track observation loss on the active turn and prevent complete after that loss.

Fixed in b777bfe8230. reconcile runs only after the event stream reconnects. It now marks every active turn missedEvents, and turnTokenUsage never reports complete for those turns. The existing "ends a turn that finished while the stream was down" test now counts one step before the gap and expects partial with those counts. It fails without the flag.
@t3dotgg The supplied code addresses this finding. reconcile sets missedEvents before backfill and settlement. turnTokenUsage then preserves observed counts as partial, even when the step counters match. Turns with no observed counts remain unavailable.
I did not run the regression test.

Exclude local/custom models from manifest path matching.
OpenCode accepts any non-empty provider/model identifier, so local/claude-sonnet-4-6 can reach a provider turn. catalogModelLabel strips local/, matches claude-sonnet-4-6 in the bundled Claude manifest, and returns that public slug. Both completion events then report the local execution as claude-sonnet-4-6, contrary to the contract that user-configured names stay out. Restrict the manifest fallback to provider identities proven to be vendor-backed, while preserving validated routed-model labels.

Keeping this as designed. The privacy rule is that no user-configured string leaves the server, and it holds: for local/claude-sonnet-4-6 the payload carries only the public manifest slug claude-sonnet-4-6, never local/ or any other configured name. Labeling routed ids by the catalog model they name is intentional, because OpenCode routes real vendor models through ids like anthropic/β¦ and openrouter/anthropic/β¦. A local server that reuses a public model name will be grouped with that model. That is an accuracy limit, not a leak, and observedModel only appears when the provider reports the model.
@t3dotgg Understood. catalogModelLabel returns the public catalog slug, not the user-configured prefix. I incorrectly treated the accepted model-attribution limit as a privacy leak. I withdraw this finding; no change is needed.

Keep model attribution unknown after a stream gap.
If model A finishes before a disconnect and model B starts during the gap but ends after reconnection, the counts include both steps while models contains only A. Analytics then reports observedModel: A and mixedModels: false. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Track model coverage or omit single-model attribution when missedEvents is true.

Fixed in 09b887414d2. A turn with missedEvents no longer reports models, so analytics gives neither observedModel nor mixedModels for it. The reconnect test now starts a step on a known model before the gap and expects no models. It fails without the change.
@t3dotgg The supplied code confirms that turnTokenUsage omits models when missedEvents is true, even if a model was observed before the gap. This addresses the finding. I did not run the reconnect test.

Mark turns admitted during reconciliation as partial.
reconcile snapshots running before await client.session.active(). A startTurn that passed the initial streamFailure check can install a new state.active during that await, but the new turn is not in running and keeps missedEvents: false. Because event following starts only after reconciliation, that turn can lose step events. A later completion can then satisfy !turn.missedEvents && turn.steps >= turn.startedSteps, report usageStatus: "complete", and omit the lost step's tokens.
Set a reconnect-in-progress marker before taking the snapshot. At turn admission, initialize every turn admitted while the marker remains set with missedEvents: true. Keep the marker through the reconcile-to-follow handoff so every turn exposed to that event gap reports partial usage.

Not changing this here. It needs a new turn to be admitted inside the reconcile window of a reconnect, after the snapshot and before event following resumes. The fix is a cross-turn marker held across the reconnect handoff, which is more machinery than this telemetry change should add for that race. The common case, a turn running when the stream drops, is marked partial. I'll take this as a follow-up.
@t3dotgg Understood. Deferring this reconnect race to a follow-up keeps the cross-turn coordination change out of this PR. The finding remains open because the change is deferred, not fixed.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the follow-up?

Mark unreadable step events as missed.
OpenCode2Client.ts drops undecodable step events without notifying the adapter. (raw.githubusercontent.com) If an external server sends an unreadable start for model B followed by a readable end, missedEvents stays false. After a prior model A step, this reports only model A and can mark the usage complete.
Propagate unreadable step events to the active turn and suppress model attribution when coverage is unknown.

Fixed in 1453f190617, without plumbing decode errors through the client. A turn where more steps ended than started now reports no models, so analytics never confirms a model for it. The token counts stay complete because every readable end is counted. A new adapter test with one seen and one unseen step start expects no models, and it fails without the guard.
@t3dotgg The updated turnTokenUsage guard addresses the reported case. When turn.steps > turn.startedSteps, it omits models without discarding the token counts.
For this case, keeping usageStatus: "complete" is appropriate because both token-bearing ends were observed. Propagating decode errors through the client is not required for this fix. I checked the supplied code; I did not run the new test.
