Problem

Android has no dictation action in the mobile composer, while iOS can transcribe a draft locally. Add Google's on-device speech recognition to the same flow, retain full paragraphs across pauses, and avoid offering a microphone when the device or language is unsupported.

Change

Use ML Kit GenAI Speech Recognition 1.0.0-alpha2 through a local Expo module. Prefer Advanced; consider Basic only when Advanced is unsupported or unavailable, including when download/preparation reports that result. Storage and battery-quota failures remain errors. Probe support asynchronously before showing the microphone, then refresh when the app returns to the foreground. Downloadable models remain eligible, but preparation/download happens only after starting dictation. Preparation and file inference run off the UI thread; cancellation waits for recognizer cleanup.

Accumulate final utterances with Google's supplied separators, retaining the latest pending hypothesis after successful stream completion. Reuse the existing recording/audio-session ownership and draft insertion flow, including scheduled-task editors. Runtime errors wrap in a padded area outside the recording toolbar, with a vertically centered dismiss action, and leave the draft editable.

Android speech requires API 31+ and uses the system language. The app retains minSdk 24 with a guarded ML Kit manifest override. Enable Android microphone permission and account for the permission activity backgrounding the app.

Google's API guide and SDK release notes.

Scope and approval

Alex explicitly requested this Google API implementation and native testing in T3 Code. This extends mobile dictation with client-local Android support. No transcription RPC, server processing, custom model runtime, rewriting model, or cloud fallback. iOS uses its existing Apple transcriber through the shared asynchronous availability flow. Web/desktop and provider adapters need no additional entry points because dictation edits the local mobile draft before submission.

Macroscope's human-approval requirement remains for the feature scope and guarded minimum-SDK override. No maintainer approval is claimed here.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, affected-package/dependent typechecks and adjacent tests. Focused controller, mobile session, availability, Android/iOS adapter suites: 48 passed. Permission and asynchronous-availability regressions failed before their fixes.
  • Native :t3-voice-transcription:testDebugUnitTest: 6 passed. Covers support without downloading, Advanced preference/download, Basic fallback at both status lookup and download, unavailable models, download/quota failures, cancellation and resource release. The download-fallback regression failed before the fix. Paragraph cases failed before the fix for lost earlier utterances and an unfinalized tail; also covers partial revisions, repeated phrases and Japanese spacing. Native ktlint and detekt passed.
  • Built and installed updated Android and iOS development clients. The Android manifest includes microphone permission and retains minSdk 24.
  • Android 15 emulator with isolated demo data: the real Google SDK reports unsupported; the final app hides the microphone in the thread composer and scheduled-task prompt. To exercise later runtime errors, temporarily bypassed only the visibility preflight, reproduced Google's real preparation error, confirmed readable padding and a centered dismiss action, grew the draft from one line to eight lines with Gboard open, and dismissed the error without losing the text. The editor scrolls at its height limit while the error remains above it. Restored the preflight and relaunched before final unsupported captures and the integrated APK build.
  • iPhone 18 Pro simulator, iOS 27: paired to the isolated backend, opened the composer and edited/cleared a draft after the shared availability change. Apple transcription is unavailable on this simulator; no iOS inference is claimed.
  • Physical Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Android 17: a 19.55-second AAC/M4A paragraph replayed through the real Advanced SDK and production file-URI adapter retains its beginning, middle and final sentence. Replay transcript and regression evidence.
  • Live microphone retest on 4868826: Alex dictated pauses, numbers and a spoken self-correction; the sent transcript contains the complete paragraph. Her recording ends during processing; final delivery is confirmed by the complete message she sent afterward.
  • Not verified: model download or Basic inference on supported physical hardware, or the new preflight on the physical Pixel. Physical Advanced inference was verified before this availability/layout follow-up. No recognizer was mocked for runtime evidence.

Captures use the same Android emulator, demo conversation, theme and viewport. The error after-capture bypasses only the visibility preflight as described above. Scheduled-task unsupported capture. Updated runtime-error recording: editor growth with Gboard and dismissal uses the same temporary visibility-preflight bypass and the real Google preparation error; text is inserted through native automation. Final unsupported-device flow: microphone hidden in both entry points uses the unmodified adapter; only its final static frame is held for readability. Earlier preflight-less recording is retained for comparison.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds on-device Android dictation with permission prompts and Android 12+ runtime gates. The new manifest override bypasses ML Kit minimum-SDK compatibility diagnostics and requires human review of that exception.

Walkthrough

The PR adds Android on-device speech transcription through an Expo module and ML Kit. It updates mobile recording permissions and voice-input integration, makes transcriber lookup asynchronous, and changes how composers display dictation errors.

Changes: On-device mobile dictation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Android transcription engine

Adds Android ML Kit module configuration and a speech client. The transcriber checks and prepares advanced and basic models, assembles transcript responses, and handles download and cancellation outcomes. Tests cover model selection, transcript assembly, failures, and cancellation.
Expo module and native bridge
apps/mobile/modules/t3-voice-transcription/expo-module.config.json, apps/mobile/modules/t3-voice-transcription/android/src/main/java/expo/modules/t3voicetranscription/T3VoiceTranscriptionModule.kt, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.android.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.android.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ts
Registers the Android module and exposes availability, preparation, transcription, and cancellation. The Android adapter checks availability and maps operation aborts and errors. Transcriber lookup now returns a promise across platforms; tests cover availability and cancellation cleanup.
Recording permission lifecycle
apps/mobile/app.config.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/voiceRecordingPermission.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/voiceRecordingPermission.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/VoiceInputProvider.tsx
Enables Android audio recording and microphone permission. The permission helper coordinates Android permission requests with app-state changes, and the provider uses it for session interruption and cleanup. Tests cover request results, background transitions, and disposal.
Composer dictation status and errors
apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/ComposerDictationControl.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadComposer.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/ScheduledTaskPromptField.tsx
Adds a dismissible dictation error component and removes error display from the status component. Both composers render errors separately and identify active dictation by status kind.
Availability message and dictation guidance
packages/client-runtime/src/voice-input/controller.ts, docs/user/composer.md
Maps unavailable preparation errors to a device-language-specific message. Adds mobile dictation guidance that describes recording limits, on-device transcription, and Android requirements.

This case only checks the new error copy; preparation failures already stop recording. Could we remove the unavailableModel case rather than test copy text?

Try Basic when an Advanced download reports unsupported.

If Advanced reports DOWNLOADABLE and its download then throws GenAiException.NOT_SUPPORTED, preparation exits without checking Basic. The changed preservesDownloadAndQuotaFailuresInsteadOfSilentlyFallingBack test also expects that result. Treat NOT_SUPPORTED or NOT_AVAILABLE as an unavailable Advanced mode; continue to Basic. Keep disk-space and quota failures as errors. The SDK defines NOT_SUPPORTED as functionality unsupported by the inference engine. (developers.google.com)

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @PixPMusic

Fixed in 5ecc03d0ef517e1e023decdc8164125d9c308f76. prepareModel now handles NOT_SUPPORTED and NOT_AVAILABLE across status lookup and download, returning to the mode loop so Basic can be tried after the Advanced client closes. Storage and battery-quota errors still propagate. The existing fallback test now covers both download errors; it failed before the change and all six native tests pass after it. ktlint, detekt, check:changed and CI also pass. Please verify the latest commit for this finding; the current summary still covers 0aafda9.

@PixPMusic Verified the fix at HEAD 5ecc03d0ef517e1e023decdc8164125d9c308f76. This addresses the finding.

  • prepareModel handles NOT_SUPPORTED and NOT_AVAILABLE from both status checks and download.
  • Returning false exits the Advanced client’s use block, which closes the client before the loop tries Basic.
  • Disk-space and battery-quota errors still propagate without fallback.
  • The updated tests cover both download errors, Basic selection, client closure, and propagation of storage and quota errors.

I inspected the current source and test changes. I did not rerun native tests or independently verify CI.

Retry transient transcriber lookup failures.

If the initial Android support probe rejects or returns false while AICore initializes, this atom remains null after the service becomes ready. makePermissionStatusAtom refreshes only on mount or app activation, so the dictation control stays unavailable until the user backgrounds and reopens the app. Keep a foreground retry path for an unavailable probe. Google documents that AICore may need time to initialize after device setup or reset. (developers.google.com)

The atom rechecks on every app activation, including returning from system Settings, so an unavailable result is not permanent. I'm keeping lifecycle-based refresh as an intentional performance tradeoff here: unsupported devices also return false, and polling every unavailable device would add periodic SDK work. Google's setup guidance describes provisioning that can take minutes to hours; a short retry loop would not reliably cover that window. The microphone stays hidden until a later lifecycle check confirms support.

@PixPMusic Understood. Lifecycle-based refresh is a reasonable performance tradeoff here. My finding treated foreground retry as a correctness requirement without establishing that requirement. I withdraw the finding. No polling change is needed.
