On a wide Android layout (Galaxy Z Fold, unfolded), the Settings pane and the composer's sidebar transitions stuttered and fell out of sync.

  • Settings. Choosing a page from the list resets the stack, so the native stack dropped the old page and slid the new one in over an empty pane. Pages opened inside Settings used Android's default push, which edge-extends the incoming page: inside a pane that bled a stripe and slid the old page under the list. The first page beside the list also had a Back that landed on an empty "Select a setting" detail. The floating tab bar opened Settings on that empty detail too, because it passed whether it was a rail as the columns flag.
  • Composer. Focusing the composer hides the sidebar, and the keyboard going away brings it back. The sidebar waited for keyboardDidHide, then ran its own 260 ms timer. The detail pane jumped to its final width in one React commit, so keyboard, sidebar, and pane each moved at a different time.

Fix

  • Split view Settings: a page picked from the list swaps without animating, like Thread and PullRequest. A page opened from a page crossfades (150 ms) inside the pane's rounded card. The first page beside the list has no back arrow, and Android Back from it leaves Settings. The Settings tab opens a page beside the list, as on iOS.
  • While the composer edits, the sidebar's width follows the keyboard's own progress (keyboard-controller's progress shared value), and its list rides the sidebar's edge. The detail pane is the space the sidebar leaves on every frame. The thread feed keeps its settled width, pinned to the pane's leading edge, so it re-wraps once. Re-wrapping every frame made it wobble as the keyboard lift, the reflow, and the end pin moved it in the same frames.
  • The floating tabs and the terminal accessory follow the keyboard's will-events, through a useSoftKeyboardShowing hook that moved out of the terminal screen.

Evidence (Galaxy Z Fold, unfolded, production JS bundle)

Composer focus, then Back, on a thread with markdown, code, and a table:

open frames after: sidebar slides out while the pane fills the space it leaves

Settings: picking a page from the list, before (blank frames, then a fade-in) and after (instant swap):

first frames after tapping General, before

Before: https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-mi5fy3sowv63ufte.pinglabs.workers.dev/f/729bdebab5625002/settings-before.mp4 After: https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-mi5fy3sowv63ufte.pinglabs.workers.dev/f/5d060807535a8982/settings-after.mp4

Push inside Settings. Before, the outgoing page covered the list's filter icon. After, the content crossfades inside the card:

before after

Before: https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-mi5fy3sowv63ufte.pinglabs.workers.dev/f/84abdd361a9b8ca3/settings-push-before.mp4 After (push, then Back): https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-mi5fy3sowv63ufte.pinglabs.workers.dev/f/55e4f66e359d9d7b/settings-push-fade.mp4

The Settings tab opens Environments beside the list:

settings tab opens a page

Settings back, top to bottom: Environments (no back arrow), an environment (back arrow), Back to Environments, Back again leaves Settings for Threads:

settings back steps

Remaining:

  • Opening the keyboard drops some frames to 30–40 fps while the keyboard insets animation and the pane relayout share the UI thread.
  • The feed takes its final width when the keyboard starts, so on open its longest lines run past the right edge until the sidebar lands. A native split container (laying out once and animating frames natively, like UIKit) is the planned follow-up.
  • The header sidebar toggle without the composer focused keeps the existing settled-width model.
  • Android's Settings tab opens Environments rather than the last page you viewed. iOS remembers it through openWorkspaceTab.

Surfaces: Android only (all changed code is Android-gated). iOS, web, and desktop are unaffected.

When the rail mounts during keyboard dismissal, this line resets the shared state from false to true because KeyboardController.isVisible() stays true until keyboardDidHide. Since this hook does not listen for keyboardDidHide, the state remains true after the keyboard closes and subsequent renders keep the sidebar hidden; preserve the state tracked by the will-events when new consumers subscribe.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change smooths wide-Android Settings and keyboard-driven pane transitions. An unresolved external review raises a shared keyboard-state concern that could leave the sidebar hidden after dismissal and needs resolution before release.

Walkthrough

The Android mobile workspace now shares soft-keyboard visibility tracking. Split-view layout adjusts sidebar and content sizing with keyboard progress. Android navigation uses route context for destination animations and Settings Back behavior.

Changes: Android workspace layout and navigation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Keyboard-aware workspace layout and consumers
apps/mobile/src/features/keyboard/useSoftKeyboardShowing.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/layout/AdaptiveWorkspaceLayout.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/terminal/ThreadTerminalRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/AndroidWorkspaceNavigation.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
Adds shared keyboard visibility tracking. The split-view layout adjusts sidebar and content dimensions with keyboard progress. The terminal screen and workspace navigation use the shared hook. The thread feed applies its settled pane width when available.
Settings Back behavior and pane clipping
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/useSettingsPageBack.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsKeyboardRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/SettingsScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsWorkspaceLayout.android.tsx
Adds a Settings Back hook. In Android split view, it resets workspace navigation when the current Settings page follows the base Settings route. Settings screens use the hook, and the detail pane clips overflowing content.
Route-aware split-view transitions
apps/mobile/src/Stack.tsx, apps/mobile/src/lib/android-workspace-navigation.ts
Passes route and stack context to the animation selector. In split view, Thread and PullRequest destinations use no animation; Settings routes use the preceding route to select an animation.

Merge Risk: External image Moderate · up to acf4d

On wide Android layouts, dismissing the keyboard after editing the composer may leave floating tabs or the sidebar hidden, because the keyboard-visible state can be restored to true during the hide. This is a narrow timing-dependent glitch rather than a data or security problem. Confirm the behavior on a device and consider reconciling the state on keyboardDidHide, or avoid re-reading native visibility on each subscription, before merging.

Do not reset the shared snapshot for each subscriber.

When the rail remounts after keyboardWillHide but before keyboardDidHide, KeyboardController.isVisible() can still return true. The rail subscription then overwrites the shared false snapshot. A later layout render can hide the sidebar again because the store does not reconcile keyboardDidHide.

Keep one shared subscription. Preserve the will-event state for new subscribers, and reconcile keyboardDidHide when needed.

Do not supply the settled feed width while the sidebar is moving.

On Android split view, contentTargetWidth can represent the sidebar-hidden pane while the content parent still reserves the animated sidebar. ThreadFeed then uses that wider value for row geometry and list sizing, although its overflow-hidden parent is narrower. The feed's right-side content can be clipped during the keyboard transition.

🟡 Medium threads/ThreadFeed.tsx:3138

On wide Android, the feed jumps to settledPaneWidth during keyboard-driven sidebar transitions instead of following the available pane width, so its content extends past the pane while the sidebar dismisses and shrinks early while it restores. AdaptiveWorkspaceLayout makes the parent fluid during this transition but still provides the settled width; disable both the width override and settled viewport-width input while keyboardHoldsSidebar is true.
