Problem

verifyPackagedBundleIsSelfContained runs the packaged server from an isolated, extracted app.asar so missing runtime dependencies fail the build instead of the user's launch. It only ran for Windows artifacts. macOS artifacts never ran it, so 0.1.4-nightly.20261027.3766 shipped an app.asar without zod and its backend crashed on every launch with Cannot find module 'zod/v4' (#25840). #25841 fixed that dependency; this PR closes the gap that let it ship.

Change

  • validateMacPackagedPayload finds each packaged .app under the electron-builder mac* output and runs the existing self-check against its Contents/Resources/app.asar. It fails with MacPackagedAppMissingError if no packaged app is found.
  • buildDesktopArtifactUnlocked calls it for mac arm64 builds on a darwin host. Release CI builds both mac arches on arm64 runners, so x64 is skipped: its native modules do not match the host Node, and the JS bundle the check guards is the same on both arches.

Verification

  • Real unsigned --platform mac --arch arm64 builds on an Apple Silicon Mac:
    • At a452c2dfdc (just before #25841) with this PR applied: build fails with BundleNotSelfContainedError ... Error: Cannot find module 'zod/v4', from node_modules/@cursor/sdk.
    • At this PR's head: build passes with Validated macOS payload (1 app bundle(s)) and writes the dmg and zip.
  • Focused tests in scripts/build-desktop-artifact.test.ts: a macOS payload whose server bundle imports a missing package is rejected, a resolvable one passes, and a stage with no .app is rejected.
  • A .app without app.asar now fails the check (CodeRabbit finding), with a test that fails without the fix.
  • vp run check:changed passes.
  • Not covered: Linux artifacts also skip the self-check.

Walkthrough

The build validates packaged macOS app archives for server bundle self-containment when the target is macOS arm64 and the host is Darwin. Tests cover missing app bundles, missing app.asar files, resolvable bundles, and unresolved server imports.

⚠️ Unverified finding Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Reject each .app that lacks app.asar.

If a stage contains two .app bundles and only one has app.asar, this filter skips the incomplete bundle. The remaining archive makes the validator succeed, so a broken macOS artifact can pass the build. Check the archive for every discovered .app, and fail when any archive is missing.

Run the macOS payload validator for x64 builds on Darwin hosts too.

The gate at scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts:4058 runs validateMacPackagedPayload only when options.arch === "arm64". A separate x64 build on a Darwin host skips the check. The comment above the gate says the arm64 check covers the shared JS bundle. That covers apps/server/dist only. It does not cover the app.asar that a separate x64 build produces. The validator checks each app.asar it finds under mac* output, so an x64 artifact with a missing runtime dependency can ship without a failed check.

Remove the arch condition so the gate matches the Darwin host check used by the validator:

Keeping the arm64 gate on purpose. Both mac release jobs run on arm64 runners (blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-26 in .github/workflows/release.yml), so on x64 the probe would run arm64 Node against x64 native modules and could fail a good release. The runtime-external closure comes from the same apps/server dependencies on both arches, so the arm64 check catches a missing package like zod for both. Verified with a real arm64 macOS build: it fails before #25841 with Cannot find module 'zod/v4' and passes at this head.

@t3dotgg You're right. verifyPackagedBundleIsSelfContained executes the extracted bundle with process.execPath, so the probe uses the host Node architecture. Removing the arm64 gate could make arm64 Node load x64 native modules and reject a valid artifact.

I withdraw the suggested change. Keeping the gate is appropriate for the release setup you described. The arm64 check covers shared JavaScript dependency failures such as zod/v4; it does not claim to validate x64-native execution.

5Learning: Within repository "pingdotgg/t3code", only for files matching one of ["scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts"]: When reviewing the macOS packaged-bundle self-check in scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts, check the architecture of the probe runtime before recommending broader target coverage. verifyPackagedBundleIsSelfContained uses process.execPath, so do not require x64 payload execution on an arm64 Node host unless the probe gains a compatible runtime. An arm64 check can cover shared JavaScript dependency failures, but must not be treated as validation of x64-native execution.

Add focused coverage for the macOS validation gate.

The macOS tests call validateMacPackagedPayload directly. They do not reach buildDesktopArtifactUnlocked, where HostProcess.Platform, options.platform, and options.arch select the validation path. A regression in that condition can pass the current tests.

Add a narrow test seam for the gate and cover the supported mac/arm64/Darwin case plus the bypassed combinations. Keep the existing helper tests because they cover separate payload behavior. Do not add another direct validator test.

Skipping the gate-seam nit. Adding a seam to buildDesktopArtifactUnlocked to test a one-line platform/arch/host condition adds more test machinery than the condition is worth. The real arm64 macOS builds already prove the gate runs: one fails before #25841 with Cannot find module 'zod/v4', and one passes at this head with Validated macOS payload (1 app bundle(s)).
