Problem

The Add environment form (ConnectionsNew and SettingsEnvironmentNew) read the app-wide pending connection error. An error another feature reported there (a failed composer send, a failed branch refresh) showed in red under the Address and Code fields as if pairing had failed, and closing the form cleared that unrelated error. Five effects kept the form in sync with atoms and route params, including dev auto-connect, which ran from a mount effect.

Change

  • pairEnvironment(pairingUrl, expectedEnvironmentId) in use-remote-environment-registry.ts pairs and returns { ok, error }. onConnectPress calls it. The "Client not supported" dialog stays the same.
  • The form keeps its own submit error in state. The route's pairing URL (or the remembered pairing URL) seeds Address and Code at mount. The route URL is also the form's key, so a new prefill link remounts the form.
  • Dev auto-connect (connections/new?pairingUrl=…&autoConnect=1, also settings/environment-new) now starts when the link is parsed (startDevAutoConnect in getAppStateFromPath). It uses main's findLinkedRoute, so it finds the form at any depth. It reports progress through devAutoConnectAttemptAtom, which the form shows as its spinner or error, and it closes the form when pairing succeeds. A remount of the form can't pair twice. Production builds ignore the flag, as before.

What this improves

  • Bug fix: the pairing form no longer shows another feature's error as a pairing failure, and closing the form no longer clears that error. Test: ConnectionsNewRouteScreen.test.tsx › "does not show another feature's error as a pairing failure". It fails with main's screen (expected '…' not to contain 'Could not send the message.').
  • Sync removed: the two reseed effects, the effect that ended the spinner when an error appeared, the unmount cleanup, and the auto-connect mount effect with its ref guard.
  • New coverage: devAutoConnect.test.ts checks pairing from a nested settings link, the failed and connecting states, closing the form on success, and that the flag is ignored without autoConnect or outside __DEV__.

Behavior changes

  • Pairing failures stay on the form. They no longer go into the app-wide pending connection error, so useRemoteConnectionStatus().connectionError (Home's connection status) no longer shows them while the form is open. Before, the form cleared that error again when it closed.
  • Typing in the form no longer clears an error other screens reported.
  • The fields are seeded once at mount and no longer re-seed when the remembered pairing URL atom changes. Only the form writes that atom. One visible result: after a successful pairing, the fields keep their values until the sheet closes instead of blanking first.
  • With autoConnect, pairing starts when the link is handled, not when the form mounts. The autoConnect param stays in the route params, and the screen ignores it.

Effects

  • ConnectionsNewRouteScreen.tsx: 5 -> 0
  • devAutoConnect.ts (new): 0
  • App.tsx, use-remote-environment-registry.ts: unchanged (0 effects touched)

Verification

  • vp test run src/features/connection/ (apps/mobile): 11 passed.
  • The new screen test, run with main's ConnectionsNewRouteScreen.tsx swapped in, fails as expected.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip 1/2, knip 2/2, typecheck (2 packages), and tests all pass.

This is slice 2 of the settings-and-connections split. Slice 1 is the prompt-links PR. This PR leaves appLinking.ts and the prompt-link files alone.

🟡 Medium connection/devAutoConnect.ts:28

When link B starts before link A finishes, A's completion overwrites or clears B's progress, and A's queued success callback can close B's pairing form. The completion and navigation callback do not verify that A is still the active attempt; track an attempt identity and ignore stale results and callbacks.

The completion and navigation callback do not verify that A is still the active attempt; track an attempt identity and ignore stale results and callbacks.

Fixed in a28226f1d3 and 12de75269f. connect keeps its own attempt object and drops the result if the atom no longer holds it, so a superseded A can't overwrite B's progress. The queued success callback also returns early when a newer attempt is in the atom. Covered by "drops the result of a pairing that a later link superseded" in devAutoConnect.test.ts.

The stale result guard resolves the atom-overwrite case. One navigation race remains: after A succeeds and clears the atom, a later non-auto-connect link also leaves it null, so A's deferred callback can still close that form. The callback needs an attempt/link generation identity rather than checking only for null.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The pairing-error isolation is focused and covered by tests, but the PR also adds app-level deep-link auto-connect state and navigation orchestration across the form, connection registry, and root navigation. That broader runtime coordination merits a human review.

Walkthrough

The mobile pairing flow supports development-only auto-connect from eligible deep links. Pairing returns an explicit outcome. The pairing form manages submission errors locally and displays the status of a matching auto-connect attempt.

Changes: Mobile pairing

Layer / File(s)Summary
Pairing command outcome
apps/mobile/src/state/use-remote-environment-registry.ts
The registry adds pairEnvironment, which returns a pairing outcome, clears the pairing URL on success, and shows an alert for unsupported clients. onConnectPress delegates to the helper, and useRemoteConnections no longer returns pairingConnectionError.
Development deep-link auto-connect
apps/mobile/src/features/connection/devAutoConnect.ts, apps/mobile/src/App.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/connection/devAutoConnect.test.ts
Eligible development deep links start pairing and track connecting or failed attempts. Successful pairing clears the attempt and navigates when the pairing form is current. App startup applies the flow to parsed link state. Tests cover flags, URLs, outcomes, and navigation.
Pairing form and screen state
apps/mobile/src/features/connection/ConnectionsNewRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/connection/ConnectionsNewRouteScreen.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
The form initializes from the route or saved pairing URL and displays a matching auto-connect attempt. Manual submission errors are local, and the submit state reflects manual or auto-connect activity. The screen test checks isolation of another feature’s pending error, and Vite includes the test in the React test project.

Guard repeated auto-connect delivery for the same pairing URL.

React Navigation 7.5.1 parses both the initial URL and subscribed URL events without deduplicating them. A repeated delivery can call connect again after the first singleFlight command has settled. The second call then redeems the same one-time pairing code and can fail after the environment was already paired.

10the first attempt settles. Clear the URL from the guard when pairing fails so
11the user can retry; retain the guard after success.

Not changing this. React Navigation hands getStateFromPath the initial URL once and each later URL event once. A second delivery of the same link means the link was opened again, and main re-paired in that case too (its ref guard lived only as long as one mounted form). Concurrent deliveries are handled: a later link supersedes the earlier attempt, and the earlier result is dropped (a28226f1d3). A permanent per-URL guard would also block a deliberate retry after success.

@juliusmarminge You're right. I treated the lack of URL deduplication as evidence of unintended duplicate delivery, which it does not establish. Reopening the same link is a separate action, and my permanent per-URL guard would block that intended behavior. I withdraw this finding.

Invalidate stale auto-connect attempts before closing the form.

connect checks only the current route name after pairEnvironment succeeds. If the user edits the form, clearError sets ownAttempt but does not invalidate the pending auto-connect. The old success callback can therefore close the user-owned form and discard its edits.

Partly addressed in a28226f1d3. Editing a field no longer re-enables Connect while the auto-connect is running (autoConnectReport keeps it busy), so the user can't start a competing pairing. When the auto-connect succeeds, the environment is paired, and closing the form is the intended result. Main did the same: its auto-connect success navigated away whatever was in the fields. That is why the form isn't kept open.

@juliusmarminge Understood. I treated field edits as cancellation of the active auto-connect, but that is not the intended behavior. Keeping Connect disabled prevents a competing manual pairing. Closing the form after successful pairing is intentional, even if the fields changed.

I withdraw the request to invalidate auto-connect on field edits or keep the form open after success.

A successful settings/environment-new?...&autoConnect=1 link leaves the navigation stack at [Home, Settings] on an iPad/split layout, so projectWorkspaceStack has no detail and displays WorkspaceEmptyDetail instead of the newly added environment. Fixed in 47bcbe1246. The auto-connect success now exits the same way main did and the form's own Connect still does: StackActions.replace("Home") when there is nothing to go back to, otherwise leaveSettingsPage(rootNavigationRef, workspaceHasColumns(), "SettingsEnvironments"). On columns it resets to [Home, Settings, SettingsEnvironments] rather than popping into an empty detail. Covered by "on columns, a successful settings link shows Environments instead of an empty detail" in devAutoConnect.test.ts, which fails on 12de75269f.

Preserve the attempt identity until the queued navigation callback runs.

whenRootNavigationReady can defer this callback. During that delay, a newer pairing-form link without autoConnect clears devAutoConnectAttemptAtom. The guard then sees null and allows the older success callback to close the newer form. Compare the atom with attempt, then clear it inside the callback after the identity check. ✅ Addressed in commit 47bcbe1

Fixed in 47bcbe1246. The success no longer clears the atom before navigation is ready. Inside the whenRootNavigationReady callback it checks that the atom still holds this exact attempt object, and only then clears it and leaves the form. A newer link, with or without autoConnect, makes the old success a no-op. Covered by "a success that waited for navigation leaves a newer link's form open", which fails on 12de75269f.

@juliusmarminge Verified the fix in the current code. The deferred callback checks the exact attempt object before clearing the atom or leaving the form. A newer pairing-form link invalidates the old callback, with or without autoConnect.

The regression test covers a newer link without autoConnect and checks that no navigation occurs. I inspected the test but did not run it.

Bind auto-connect success to the originating form.

When an auto-connect attempt succeeds, the callback checks only the current route name. If the user opens another ConnectionsNew or SettingsEnvironmentNew form before the original attempt finishes, the callback can close or replace that newer form. Track the originating form or URL in the attempt and require it to match before applying the success navigation.

Clear connectionPairingUrlAtom only when it still holds the URL that was paired.

The success path clears connectionPairingUrlAtom before the caller checks whether its attempt is still current. A superseded development auto-connect success can therefore clear a URL that a newer manual submit wrote. The clear should compare the stored value with the paired pairingUrl first.

This fix also leaves a different remembered URL in place after a current auto-connect success. If that clear is intended, move it into the caller after its staleness check.
