Problem

In a mobile browser (seen on Chrome for Android), selecting assistant text never shows the Cite button, so a selection can't be cited into the reply.

To reproduce: open a thread on a phone, long-press a word in an assistant message, and optionally drag the handles. No Cite button appears.

Change

observeSelectionActions only showed the action on mouseup after a pointer gesture. A touch selection never follows that sequence:

  • The long-press fires contextmenu, which cancelled the action.
  • Chrome then fires pointercancel, which dismissed it.
  • The selection handles dispatch no pointer events, so the mouseup never arrives.

The observer now remembers whether the last primary pointer was touch. For touch, it ignores contextmenu, does not dismiss on pointercancel, and shows the action once selectionchange (or scrolling, with restoreAfterScroll) has settled for 150 ms. An explicit dismissal, such as Escape, still holds until the next press. Mouse and pen take the same path as before.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug: an existing feature (citing a selection) is unreachable on touch devices. It changes one function in apps/web/src/lib/selectionActions.ts plus a test, and leaves desktop behaviour alone.

Verification

  • New browser test apps/web/src/lib/selectionActions.browser.test.ts replays the touch sequence: touch pointerdown, contextmenu, pointercancel, then a selection.
    • On main it fails (onSelection is never called).
    • With this change it passes.
  • A second test covers an explicit dismissal: after a touch selection, Escape followed by a scroll or selectionchange must not bring Cite back. Without clearing the touch flag in cancel(), onSelection fires a second time.
  • vp run check:changed passes.
  • Not checked: a physical Android device and iOS Safari. I have no before/after capture because the bug only shows with a real touch long-press, which headless Chromium can't produce.

🟡 Medium lib/selectionActions.ts:167

After Escape dismisses a touch selection, the next scroll schedules onSelection and shows the Cite button again, even though the selection was explicitly dismissed. The unconditional touch branch bypasses dismissed here, and the touch branch in selectionChanged() does the same; preserve an explicit-dismissal guard in both paths while still allowing touch selection-handle updates.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, focused fix to the existing selection-action handler so touch-selected text can surface the Cite action, with browser coverage and unchanged mouse/pen paths. The shared touch path has a noted explicit-dismissal edge case, but the change itself is limited to existing UI behavior and its test.

Walkthrough

observeSelectionActions now tracks touch-pointer input and adjusts context-menu, pointer-cancel, scroll, and selection-change handling. Browser tests cover touch selection callbacks after pointer cancellation and after Escape dismissal.

Touch pointer state controls context-menu dismissal, pointer-cancel handling, scroll restoration, and selection processing. Browser tests cover the selection callback after pointer cancellation and verify that scrolling after Escape does not trigger another callback during the tested interval.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): Cite shows for text selected by touch" matches the main change. The PR makes observeSelectionActions in selectionActions.ts show the Cite action for touch-based text selection, which the raw summary and objectives both confirm. It is a conventional commit title and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification are all filled in. The Problem section gives the reproduction steps and the environment (Chrome for Android). The Change section explains the three touch event causes and the fix. Scope explains why this is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug. Verification names the new browser tests, the before and after results, the check command, and what was not tested. The author did not include screenshots or a recording. The template asks for before and after screenshots for UI changes, but this fix only shows up with a real touch long-press, and the author explains why no capture was made. The description also does not state a conventional commit title, which the template comment mentions, but the title in the PR is already in that form.

Do not restore a touch action after explicit dismissal.

If restoreAfterScroll is enabled, a touch selection is dismissed with Escape, and the selection remains, a later scroll schedules onSelection again. cancel() clears restorable but leaves touch true, so this branch bypasses the dismissal state. Track whether a touch selection is awaiting restoration, and clear that state on dismissal. Add a regression test for Escape followed by scroll. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
