fix(mobile): handle image drops in the Android composer#25574
Problem
On Android 11, dragging an image from Files onto the message input focuses the editor but adds no attachment. The existing expo-paste-input receive-content listener is installed only on Android 12+, leaving supported Android 7–11 without that image-drop path.
Change
Handle image drops in the native Android composer, acquire the drag's URI read grant, and deliver the images once through the existing attachment callback. Read-only and disabled inputs reject drops; ordinary text drops retain native insertion. Mixed or unreadable image clips are rejected without inserting URI text.
Resolve the MIME type reported for content URIs, which often have no filename extension, and convert unsupported image formats to JPEG through the existing image pipeline. Remove the temporary JPEG after processing, including rejected attachments, and keep converted previews backed by image data. Keep existing attachment limits, previews, and removal behavior. Document dragging into the Android message input in split screen. Remove the stale useLayoutEffect import in ThreadComposer so the current upstream composer passes CI lint.
Scope and approval
This is a focused obvious-bug fix for an existing attachment interaction missing on supported Android versions, submitted under the small-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It is limited to the message input. The separate iOS counterpart is #25532.
Verification
- Native reproduction: Android 11 / API 30 AOSP tablet emulator, T3 Code Dev built from upstream
3f9448747bb8, isolated backend, Files and T3 Code in split screen. Select a PNG in Files, hold it, drag to the message input, and release. Baseline: no attachment. Fixed: exactly one image preview and inline attachment, with the send action enabled. Repeated with a typed prompt: text preserved. Removing the attachment worked. - The recordings show actual cross-app native drags driven through Android emulator touch events. No drop callbacks or attachment state were injected.
- Native tests:
apps/mobile/android/gradlew -p apps/mobile/android :t3-composer-editor:testDebugUnitTest --tests '*ComposerPasteTest' --max-workers=2 -PreactNativeArchitectures=arm64-v8a— 20 passed. The new drop cases run on Robolectric API 24 and 36 and cover image batches, locked/disabled inputs, mixed/unreadable clips, and text drops. The same suite had 9 failures before the native fix. - Image conversion tests:
vp test run apps/mobile/src/lib/composerImages.test.ts— 10 passed, including temporary JPEG cleanup after successful attachment and oversized rejection; the 2 original content-URI format cases failed before the conversion fix. - Checks:
vp run check:changed upstream/main, ktlint, Detekt, andgit diff --checkpassed. The Android native client built and installed successfully. - Runtime gesture verification used Files on Android 11. Physical devices, gallery apps, and Android 12+ runtime gestures were not exercised; API 36 coverage above is a native unit test.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at 62d858d
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized Android composer bug fix that routes explicitly dropped images through the existing attachment pipeline and adds MIME handling for Android content URIs. Unrelated text drops and existing attachment constraints remain unchanged, with targeted native and conversion tests added.

Walkthrough
The mobile composer now accepts image drag-and-drop on Android and converts pasted images using reported MIME types when available. Android guidance and tests cover drag-and-drop behavior. Tests also cover image conversion and temporary-file cleanup.

Explanation
The title "fix(mobile): handle image drops in the Android composer" follows conventional commit format and names the main change: image drop handling in the Android composer. The changeset adds native drag-and-drop image handling in T3ComposerEditorView, related tests, MIME-type resolution and JPEG conversion in composerImages.ts, a docs note, and a stale import cleanup in ThreadComposer. The title covers the primary change and omits only secondary details, which is expected.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the Android 11 image-drop gap and gives reproduction context. The Change section explains the native drop handling, MIME resolution, JPEG conversion, and temporary-file cleanup. The Scope section cites the small-fix exception and links the iOS counterpart. The Verification section lists the emulator reproduction, native and TypeScript test results, lint checks, and before/after evidence, and it states what was not tested. The description also states the commit-style title and the agent/model used, as the template requests. The only gaps are minor: the Scope section does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, and it relies on the small-fix exception instead. That exception is explained, so the check passes.

Clean up the rendered JPEG file.
For an unsupported image type, renderPhoto(uri) saves a JPEG but this line keeps only its base64. Nothing in this conversion path deletes the saved file, even if the attachment fails the later size check. Repeated conversions leave unused JPEGs in the app cache. Keep the returned URI and delete that file after processing. Expo documents that saveAsync writes the result to the cache directory. (docs.expo.dev)

✅ Addressed in commit 8a4eca1
Valid finding, fixed in 8a4eca13db. The rendered JPEG URI is now tracked and deleted in finally, including when the attachment fails the size check. Converted previews use the data URL, and the original content URI is left untouched. Regression coverage checks successful conversion and oversized rejection; all 10 conversion tests and vp run check:changed upstream/main pass.
@12ya Thanks for fixing this. The updated code deletes the rendered JPEG in finally, including after oversized rejection. It also preserves the original content URI and uses a data URL for the converted preview. This addresses the finding.

thanks @12ya. i kept your native drop handling, activity-scoped URI grant, all-item validation, MIME conversion, and JPEG cleanup. i merged current main without rebasing and added one small fix: all pasted previews now use the retained image data, so they do not depend on a drag grant after activity destruction. the existing regression test failed before this fix and passes afterward. the final diff is five files; the stale import cleanup is already on main.
verification at 8a9a6e6c6055d7226ae5c54cb06978db27d66c62:

vp run check:changed 323d9611ff49521357fdc205f667614602ec46b6passed format, lint, knip, mobile/scripts typechecks, and all 10 image tests. three conversion tests fail against main's implementation. - all 27 CI checks are green. two independent code reviews approve this head. the earlier bot cleanup finding is addressed; coderabbit's latest review was quota-limited.
- unverified here: native cross-app grants, android 12+ receive-content interaction, preview after activity recreation, removal, and sending. device access is disabled in this environment, with no connected android device. i did not rerun native unit tests or capture new native screenshots/video. the original android 11 evidence remains in the description; it is not evidence for this head.
@12ya, one nonblocking follow-up: supported PNG/JPEG resizing through fitComposerImage already leaves rendered cache files untracked on main. i left that existing cleanup gap outside this takeover.
the code and CI are ready for review, but native runtime verification remains required before calling this fully verified. no labels, PR state, or original description were changed.

Verified in a real dev environment
no changed runtime behavior could be exercised on this boat vm. this is an unverifiable result, not a pass.
i read the description, five-file diff, commits, discussion and inline review replies at head 8a9a6e6c6055d7226ae5c54cb06978db27d66c62. the pr is open, with no pr commits authored by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. git.cafe maps github #25573 to #25574. cafe reports 27 successful checks, zero pending and zero failing. those are existing ci results, not runtime proof from this attempt.
runtime prerequisite transcript:
| 1 | $ adb devices -l |
| 2 | List of devices attached |
| 3 | [no devices] |
| 4 | |
| 5 | $ t3 device_list |
| 6 | Agent device access is turned off for this environment. |
the test-t3-mobile skill requires stopping verification when device access is unavailable and prohibits switching automation systems. no dev server was started, no code was changed, and no screenshot or recording was captured. existing pr media was not treated as proof for this attempt.
Not verified
main's original android image-drop failure was not reproduced. the pr head was not runtime-tested. native cross-app image drops, uri grants, exactly-once delivery, extensionless content-uri mime handling, jpeg conversion and cleanup, previews after activity recreation, attachment removal, text preservation and ordinary text drops, locked/disabled rejection, android 12+ receive-content interaction, and sending an attachment through codex gpt-6.1-sol remain unverified. ios and physical devices were not exercised.
the changed implementation is in the native android editor and mobile image pipeline. a playwright/chrome web drop would not exercise it. completing this pass requires enabled android device access and matching main/head native split-screen drag checks followed by a real provider send. no branch checkout/install or main/head server run was attempted after the device prerequisite failed.
