fix(client): show reconnecting instead of stale working status#25471
Problem
When an environment stops answering, cached active threads still say Working with an elapsed timer even though the connection banner says reconnecting. This makes an unreachable agent look active. Fixes #25449.
Change
Pass the existing environment connection phase through shared thread-shell presentation, including quiet cached reads. Web/desktop and React Native thread lists show Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline for cached active work and suppress its work timer until connected again. Known terminal outcomes and pending requests retain their existing priority. Connection loss does not change the authoritative runtime or move threads between sections; pinned rows intentionally stay above Working.
Scope and approval
This is a focused correction of an obvious status inconsistency, submitted under the small bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. The shared presentation change and both client consumers address the same defect. No setting, wire contract, provider behavior, or persisted state changes.
Verification
- Before the fix, both client resolver regressions failed: expected Reconnecting, received Working. The shared-atom regression also failed because cached shells lacked connection phase.

The first post-rebase test run could not launch the pinned Chromium runtime; installing that test prerequisite resolved it.- Parent code audit: no actionable findings. A separate Claude Opus 5.5 review was attempted but could not start because organization subscription access is disabled; no independent review is claimed.
Before / after — actual Electron captures. Same disposable projected running threads, selection, viewport and Working setting. The remote fixture server is paused for both captures. Before: pinned and unpinned rows show Working 12m. After: both show Reconnecting without sidebar timers; pin precedence, Working membership and the historical Failed row remain intact. This GIF alternates still captures, not a motion comparison.

Recovery without reload. Resuming the same remote server restores Working and its timer and removes the reconnecting banner. The candidate recording below is normal speed, sampled at 8 fps; it is not a latency benchmark or a baseline/candidate motion comparison.

Proof uses real Electron rendering/transport with synthetic projected runs and startup reconciliation disabled on the disposable fixture server; no provider executed. Current head 8d182c03ef5 is rebased onto 071239804e3; git range-diff reports the fix unchanged. The existing captures demonstrate the unchanged connection-status derivation, status rendering and timer guard; they were not recaptured after the rebase. New base changes to mobile row layout have logic/typecheck coverage here, not new mobile visual proof. Both captured desktop builds used an isolated profile and --disable-gpu. Only the current desktop sidebar's reconnecting path and recovery were visually exercised; mobile, legacy sidebar, and other connection phases have focused logic coverage only. The central timeline's cached Working timer and lineage counts remain outside this sidebar fix.
Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code. Desktop proof by GPT-6 Astra in the same harness.

Thread shells now carry environment connection phases into web and mobile status resolution. Cached active work can display as Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline instead of Working. Approval and input statuses, terminal outcomes, and thread placement retain their existing behavior.

Explanation
Issue [
#25449] requires connection-aware status for cached active work, no work timer while disconnected, status restoration after reconnect, and unchanged outcomes and placement. The shared resolver maps active cached work to Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline. Thread-shell point and list reads carry the connection phase. Web and mobile consumers apply the connection status before runtime status while preserving pending requests and terminal outcomes. The reported tests cover timer suppression, recovery, pin placement, and Working membership.

Explanation
The supplied change summary limits production changes to shared thread-shell connection-phase plumbing, web sidebar presentation, and mobile thread-list presentation. The related tests and test-harness inputs support these changes. No server, provider, wire-contract, persisted-state, setting, lineage, orphan-recovery, or unrelated mobile shelf change is shown. Rebased onto main (a7d0447). The remaining Test Web failure is in apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx, which this PR doesn't touch. The failing test differed between the two runs here (the font preview, then large text preview recovery), and the same file is failing on main's own CI right now (run 40606502504). Everything else is green.

updated the original branch at d89521dbad, preserving saphid's commits and connection-state behavior. merged current main and resolved the import conflict. kept the existing sidebar status expression intact and applied the connection override separately, reducing that file's diff from 85 changed lines to 17. no contracts, provider behavior, runtime state, or shelf placement changed.
verification:
- reproduced stale working and its frozen timer on main in chrome. the original regression cases against main failed 23 cases; all 217 focused tests pass with the fix.
- blacksmith
vp run check:changed github/mainpassed format, lint, knip, seven package typechecks, 354 tests in nine files, and 11 react compiler checks. - all 34 ci check contexts are green on this head (23 passed, 11 skipped). two independent read-only reviewers approved this head with no blockers. the old child-input comparison finding was withdrawn by its reviewer; that banner reads request fields, while row connection phases come from the navigation/shell atoms.
- exercised an actual replay-provider turn through the web client: working → reconnecting without the sidebar timer → recovered approval → working → completion, without reloading. the recording is normal speed.
unverified here: electron, native mobile rendering, relay/tunnel, and paid providers. transport can report connected before shell synchronization finishes, so a cached working label can briefly return during catch-up; this preexisting window remains outside the disconnection fix.
matched light-theme captures use the same thread, replay scenario, sidebar width, viewport, and transport interruption. they are separate turns, so elapsed labels and conversation history differ. main before:
main: disconnected thread still shows working and a frozen timer
updated branch:
fix: the same disconnected thread shows reconnecting without a sidebar timer
recovery through the provider and client:
replay turn disconnects, reconnects, resumes after approval, and completes

Verified in a real dev environment
verified unchanged head d89521dbad93dd4d59a60a2d2324de16c47278e5 on a linux boat vm. reproduced the bug first on github/main at 80a2351fcb909034e65a512dfabeb3cdfd367762 in a separate worktree. installed both with vp i and ran one background dev server at a time. verification used repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome at 1440 x 1000.
created a project pointing at a real git repository through the app. sent real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the web composer and local proxy, asking it to run a shell sleep and return a marker. no replay provider, mocks, fixtures, or projected runs.
- main: during the live turn, interrupting transport and pausing the server produced a reconnecting banner while the sidebar retained working and its timer.
- pr: the same thread showed connecting/reconnecting with no sidebar timer. restoring the server returned working and its elapsed timer without reload. the real provider turn completed with
RECOVERY_OK. - neighboring behavior: the thread stayed in the working section; a pinned active turn stayed pinned and showed offline without a timer; reconnecting delivered
PINNED_OK. a completed cached thread did not become offline/working when disconnected. - blacksmith: 217 existing tests passed across thread shell, inbox, presentation, web sidebar logic, and mobile thread-list logic. the head has 34 successful ci contexts, zero pending and zero failing. two independent read-only sol reviewers approved this exact head without blockers.

before and after use the same app-created project/thread, viewport, theme, sidebar width, and sleep scenario. they are successive real turns, so conversation history and elapsed values differ. the copied state also gained an automatic empty server project at startup. the central timeline timer is outside this sidebar fix and remains visible in both.

native ios/android rendering, electron shell, macos/windows, remote relay/tunnel, other providers, and the legacy sidebar were not exercised on this linux web setup. pending approval/input precedence and other terminal outcomes have focused existing test coverage, but were not separately driven through a real provider in this pass. the recording and screenshots cover the current sidebar only. no source changes or pushes were needed.
