Problem

The pull requests page kept one composite list snapshot per environment set. An effect rewrote it whenever the page's local list state changed, so every reorder, override or partition update serialized up to 99 rows to localStorage again. Only the last scope visited was kept, so a cold start in any other scope had nothing of its own to restore.

Change

  • state/pullRequests.ts: the list query's answer handler (the onAnswer hook from the merged query-answers work) now stores each environment's first-page answer per scope. The key leaves out the project assignment, because a cold start asks before projects load. Up to eight recently used scopes are kept, and a whole scope is evicted at once. restorePullRequestList merges the stored answers the same way live answers are merged and drops duplicates left by a project reassignment.
  • PullRequestsPage.tsx: a cold start restores the list and its authored and reviewing partitions from those answers. The snapshot write effect is gone.
  • pullRequestList.logic.ts: removes the composite read/writePullRequestListSnapshot and their tests.

What this improves

  • Removes sync: the localStorage write now happens once per host answer instead of after every local list-state change.
  • Cold starts restore each of the last eight scopes, not only the most recent one.
  • No bug-fix claim. The shared-summary mirror effects this unit originally targeted were already removed on main in https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/25008.

Behavior changes

  • Storage layout: t3.pullRequests.listScope:* plus the index key t3.pullRequests.listScopes replace t3.pullRequests.list:<envs>. The old keys are deleted on the first write, so the first start after upgrading has no cached list.
  • Answers are stored as received from the host. The page's local reorders and optimistic overrides no longer reach storage.
  • Only first-page reads are stored. Searches, continuation pages and pages grown past 99 rows are not, which matches the old rule of never saving searches.
  • An answer for some of an environment's projects replaces only those projects' rows and keeps the environment's other stored rows. The combined rows are capped at one page, the new answer's rows first. A repository that moved to another environment stays covered until that environment answers. An answer for all of an environment's projects, which every cold start sends, replaces everything.
  • If reading localStorage throws (storage blocked), nothing is stored or restored and the page reads fresh.
  • Partitions are restored from their own stored answers (involvement: authored and reviewing), not from a copy saved alongside the list.

Effects

  • PullRequestsPage.tsx: 9 -> 8
  • state/pullRequests.ts: 0 -> 0
  • pullRequestList.logic.ts: 0 -> 0

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.test.ts apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestList.logic.test.ts: 51 passed. New tests are in "pull request list answers across a reload".

  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (34 packages) and graphql passed. In the test step, 2 of 3520 tests failed. The visible failure was a clipboard execCommand("copy") browser assertion that timed out under load. A rerun of MarkdownCopy.browser.test.tsx and all of components/pullRequest/ passed (16 files, 163 tests).

  • Review follow-up (c5e7ee9587): tests for blocked storage and a shared repository moving between environments, both failing before the fix. Live check on web: the list restored after reload, the page loaded with localStorage throwing, and Ctrl+N, Ctrl+Shift+O, Ctrl+K, composer send, thread switch, settings and the diff panel all worked.

  • Review follow-up (d9a4a1a9b0): the page cap now applies after combining a partial answer with retained rows (it could store 198). The test "keeps one page per environment when retained rows join a partial answer" fails without it. Live re-check on web: the list restored 99 rows after reload, and Ctrl+N, Ctrl+Shift+O, Ctrl+K, composer send, thread switch, settings and the diff panel all worked.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR substantially changes production pull-request caching and cold-start behavior by introducing per-environment scope storage, eviction, reassignment handling, and restored partition data. The implementation is localized and tested, but the persistence and merge logic is complex enough to warrant human review.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "refactor(web): pull request list remembers each answer for the next start" follows conventional commit format and names the main change: the pull request list now stores each environment's first-page answer per scope so it can restore on cold start. The changeset matches this: it adds scoped answer storage and restore logic in state/pullRequests.ts, removes the composite snapshot helpers and the snapshot write effect, and updates PullRequestsPage.tsx to restore from stored answers. The title is 73 characters, within a reasonable length for a single-sentence title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, and Verification are filled in with specific detail. Problem explains the composite snapshot rewrite cost and the single-scope limit. Change lists the affected files and the new per-scope answer storage. Verification gives exact test commands, results, and a live web check. The Scope and approval section is missing. It does not link a triaged bug issue or a maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain why the change qualifies without one. The description also says it is not a bug fix, so the exemption for a small obvious bug fix does not apply. The template also asks for before/after screenshots for UI changes. This PR changes persistence behavior and does not change visible UI, so screenshots are likely not needed, but the author should confirm that. The model and harness line is present at the end of the Verification section.

Resolution

Add a "Scope and approval" section. Link the triaged issue or the discussion that has explicit maintainer approval of this direction and scope, including the approval comment. The author states this is a refactor, not a bug fix, so the small-obvious-fix exemption does not apply. Also confirm whether any screenshots are needed. The PR changes only persistence behavior, so screenshots may not apply, but the template asks for them on UI changes.

Guard the window.localStorage read in snapshotStorage().

snapshotStorage() reads window.localStorage without a try/catch. When browser storage is blocked, that read throws. Two call sites in this change run the read without a guard:

  • The list callback calls snapshotStorage() before rememberPullRequestListAnswer and before its entry-observation loop. A throw stops the callback, so the entry observations for that answer are lost.
  • restoredPullRequestList calls snapshotStorage() during PullRequestsPage render. A throw escapes before the restore call returns null. The page cannot reach its fetch fallback, and the render cannot complete for affected users.

Returning undefined from the getter fixes both call sites. The restore and remember helpers already accept undefined, and the server-side branch already returns it.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Real, fixed in c5e7ee9587. snapshotStorage() now returns undefined when reading window.localStorage throws, so the list callback still records its observations and the page falls back to a fresh read. The new test "falls back to a fresh read when the browser blocks storage" stubs a throwing localStorage getter and fails without the change. I also checked it live: with localStorage made to throw in the page, the pull requests page still loaded its list.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms that snapshotStorage() catches a throwing window.localStorage getter and returns undefined. This addresses the finding and preserves the server-side behavior. Thanks for adding the regression test and checking the page live.

Keep project coverage consistent when replacing a stored answer.

Suppose environment A stores project P1 and environment B stores P2. After reassignment, A can answer for P2 before B answers for P1. This write replaces A’s P1 answer while B still stores P2. A reload then restores P2 twice and omits P1; deduplication cannot recover P1. Stage answers for a complete assignment generation, or retain the previous generation until all affected environments answer.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Real, fixed in c5e7ee9587. A repository two environments share goes to the first query environment (assignProjectsToEnvironments). When that order flips, the environment losing the repository can answer first and replace its kept answer with one that no longer has the repository's rows. A reload before the environment taking it over answers then restored a list without those rows. Rather than staging answer generations, an answer for some projects (projectIds set) now replaces only those projects' rows and keeps the environment's other kept rows, capped at a page. An answer for all of an environment's projects, which every cold start sends, still replaces everything, so retained rows don't outlive the next cold start. Restore already dedupes the overlap. The test "keeps a shared repository's rows when it moves to an environment that has not answered yet" fails without the change.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code addresses this finding. Partial answers now retain cached rows for projects outside input.projectIds, so the losing environment’s response preserves coverage while the gaining environment’s response is pending. All-project answers still replace the environment’s full cached answer, and restore removes overlapping entries.

Staging answer generations is not needed for this fix.

Cap the combined stored entries at 99.

If an earlier answer has 99 rows for one project and a partial-project answer has 99 rows for another, retained keeps the earlier rows. Line 313 then stores 198 rows for one environment. Restoration renders more than the intended first page and increases storage and render work. Apply the cap after combining the rows, with an explicit policy for which older rows to retain.

As per coding guidelines, “Make sure all changes are considerate of performance impact.”

Real, fixed in d9a4a1a9b0. A partial answer of 99 rows plus 99 retained rows from an earlier answer stored 198 rows for one environment. The cap now applies after combining: the fresh answer's rows come first and retained rows only fill what is left of the page ([...answer.entries, ...retained].slice(0, LIST_ANSWER_MAX_ENTRIES)). The test "keeps one page per environment when retained rows join a partial answer" fails without the change (198 rows instead of 99).

@juliusmarminge The combined cap addresses the overflow and keeps fresh rows first. The regression test covers the reported 198-row case. Thanks for the fix.
