fix(server): mobile push no longer says "completed" between runs#24769

Mobile push said "Thread completed" when a run ended and its continuation started a moment later, then said it again when the work really finished. #24760 fixed this for web notifications. Mobile push comes from the server relay, which that PR did not touch.

The relay sends an alert on every move into completed, and the server held back only a thread's first completion. Now every completion waits the existing 5s confirm window. If the thread is running again by then, the completion is never published. If it auto-settled instead (for example after a merge), the completion still publishes, and the card clears on a new tombstone window. Failed runs still publish at once.

Proved with a focused test: on main, a running β†’ completed β†’ running sequence publishes running, completed, running. With this change it publishes only running, and the final completion still publishes once. A second test shows a thread that settles during the hold publishes running, completed, null. Not checked with a real device push, because that needs an environment linked to T3 Connect.

Follow-up to #24760 (originally noted in #22458 by @omar7550).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 22816eb

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable β€” This is a focused server-side fix that prevents transient completion states from generating duplicate mobile notifications while preserving completion alerts for genuinely settled work. The production change is localized to the relay confirmation flow and is covered by targeted tests.

Include the run completion in completion deduplication.

A second run can complete before the worker processes its running update. The worker then reads another completed snapshot. projectThreadAwarenessV2 does not include a run identifier or completion timestamp in its state, and agentAwarenessPublishIdentity removes updatedAt. If the other fields are unchanged, the second completion has the same identity as the first and returns before starting confirmation. It is not published.

Include latestRunCompletedAt or the run ID in the identity used for completed snapshots. Keep it out of the payload if it is not part of the relay contract.

Not changing this here. The coalescing is not new: on main, a second completion that arrives before the worker reads any running state has the same identity and is skipped the same way. It is also the behavior we want. The phone never saw the thread running between the two runs, so one "completed" alert per visible completion is right. Adding the run ID to the identity would bring back a second alert for work the user saw as one completion, and that is what this PR removes.

When a new run projects to null before confirmation, this branch publishes the held completion even if that run is still active, producing a stale completion alert. reason === "snapshot" only confirms the thread and project exist; queued, cancelled, interrupted, and silent-compaction states also project to null. Check the current shell's settlement and run identity before replaying the held completion.

No longer relevant as of ee8c24e79dcd874a7c8f471a73736d4beae2ba13

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Fixed in ee8c24e. The replay now runs only when the thread is settled and the same projection, read with settledOverride: null, gives completed. So settlement is the only thing hiding the card. A queued continuation or a silent run no longer replays. The test "drops a held completion when a queued continuation hides the thread" publishes running, completed on 25e3df9 and no completion now.

The queued-continuation case is fixed. However, the held snapshot is still replayed without comparing it to the current run/reprojected completion, so the requested run-identity check is still missing.

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Fixed in 22816eb. The replay no longer sends the held snapshot. It publishes the re-projected current completion, so it always describes the run that actually settled. The hold now only records which threads hold a completion.

Clear held completions when the relay connection resets.

If publishing is disabled or the relay link changes during a completion hold, resetPublishedConnection clears the deadline but leaves heldCompletions intact. If the thread then settles, a later publish can send that stale completion after publishing resumes. Clear heldCompletions alongside the deadlines and published identities in resetPublishedConnection.

Gate held-completion publication on terminal settlement.

projectThreadAwarenessV2 returns null for cancelled, interrupted, queued, or idle runs, stop-requested completions, silent runs, and subagents. The relay marks all existing thread/project projections with reason "snapshot". Therefore, a null "snapshot" can reach this branch without settlement and publish the held completion. Distinguish the explicit terminal-settlement path from the other null projection paths before publishing.

15Thread settlement is server-owned. The
16[settlement service](../../apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSettlementService.ts) evaluates PR
17and inactivity settings without a connected client. Merge notifications invalidate cached PR state
18and trigger a check. A merge outside T3, such as an agent running `gh pr merge`, sends no
19notification, so the [PR sync reactor](../../apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/PullRequestSyncReactor.ts)
20re-reads a thread's open links when a run that ran a merge or close command ends. The guarded
21`thread.auto-settle` command rejects newer activity, explicit settlement overrides, and live or
22blocked work. It records the activity timestamp for stable
23sorting and detaches idle provider sessions. Clients render the persisted result; they do not
24derive settlement from their own clocks or PR caches.

Start a new hold for a different run's completion.

If run A starts a hold and run B completes before that deadline, heldCompletions.add(threadId) retains run A's deadline. The worker can then publish run B's completion less than five seconds after run B finishes. Track the held run ID separately from the published-state identity, and restart confirmation when that run ID changes.

Not changing this. When run B starts during A's hold, the running read matches the published identity, and that branch clears both the deadline and the hold (line 548). A's deadline can only carry over when B starts and finishes between two worker reads. The phone never sees B running in that case. The confirm still re-reads the thread and publishes only if it is completed at that moment. Any continuation after B goes live and drops it. A per-run deadline would only add a second wait for a completion the worker has already seen stay completed.

@t3dotgg You're right. When the worker reads running, it clears both the deadline and the held completion, including when the published identity is unchanged.

If run B starts and finishes between worker reads, the relay intentionally coalesces those completions. Confirmation reads the current thread state before publication. My recommendation imposed a per-run confirmation window that this behavior does not require. I withdraw the finding.
