feat(mobile): search Settings, and keep its sidebar header clean#24766

Settings on iPad and the iPhone Duo had a redundant "Settings" title in the sidebar, a maximize button no settings app has, and no way to search.

Changes

  • Search: the Settings list gets the same search field as the Threads and PRs sidebars, with its own query.
    • Rows filter by label, section and keywords for what each page holds ("dark" finds Appearance), using the command palette's matcher. Empty sections drop out, and no match shows an empty state.
    • On Android, the Settings app bar gets the magnifier-to-field pattern the other lists use.
  • Header: beside a detail column, the sidebar keeps the T3 Code mark. The tab bar already says you're in Settings, and the detail header names the page.
  • No maximize: Settings pages lose the sidebar toggle.
  • Filter button: the workspace toolbar no longer mounts an empty trailing toolbar for Settings. That would have replaced the scope filter in the header.

Verification

On the unfolded iPhone Duo simulator against a real environment:

  • Searching, the brand header, the filter button and the missing maximize button all checked.
  • vp run check:changed passes, with table-driven tests for the filter.

Not verified:

  • Folded Duo: the rail's search button takes the trailing toolbar, so the scope filter isn't shown there.
  • iPhone, iPad and Android in a real client.

Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

🟠 High workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.ios.tsx:188

On iOS without Liquid Glass, opening Settings removes the environment/project scope filter, so users cannot change their Settings scope. This condition still mounts the right Toolbar on those clients, and NativeHeaderToolbar replaces rather than merges unstable_headerRightItems; keep the fallback search button without replacing the Settings filter.

No longer relevant as of c22d89112d9a59e9645566530f2e8b0bf3202789

Fixed: without Liquid Glass, Settings now keeps its search field out (no trailing search button), and the trailing toolbar is no longer mounted for Settings outside the folded Duo, so the scope filter stays.

This still affects folded Duo without Liquid Glass: foldedSearch keeps the trailing toolbar mounted for Settings, which replaces the scope filter. Could you cover that case too?

Walkthrough

Settings now has separate workspace search state and toolbar controls. The settings screen filters overflow, connection, and settings-page rows by query, and displays a no-results state when no rows match.

Changes: Workspace Settings Search

Layer / File(s)Summary
Add Settings search state
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/workspace-tabs-state.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceTabsContext.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/workspace-tabs-state.test.ts
Search state and scroll offsets now include Settings. The reducer supports Settings search actions, and a test checks that cancelling Settings search preserves the Threads query.
Wire Settings into workspace search
apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceRootScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceToolbar.ios.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/layout/createWorkspaceStackNavigator.ios.tsx
The workspace uses Settings as the active search tab while settings are open. Toolbar labels and visibility account for Settings, and the settings sidebar header-item injection is removed.
Filter and render settings rows
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/settings-search.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/SettingsScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/settings-search.test.ts
Settings rows are filtered by labels, section titles, and page-specific terms. The screen renders matching sections or a no-results state. Tests cover query matching and empty sections.

Label the visible Settings header as Settings.

When Settings is open beside a sidebar, this condition renders WorkspaceRootTitle. Its accessibility label still uses state.selectedTab, so a Settings screen opened over Threads announces “T3 Code, Threads.” Use the visible Settings scope when constructing that label.

Keep the underlying tab’s search field off the Android Settings screen.

If a Threads or Pull Requests search is active when the user opens Settings, this branch mounts the Android WorkspaceToolbar. That toolbar reads state.tabs[state.selectedTab], so it shows and edits the underlying tab’s search alongside the Settings search input. Make its Android search controls Settings-aware, or suppress those controls while Settings is open without removing the needed navigation dock.

Fixed: Android Settings keeps the section toolbar; its list carries its own search in the app bar, so the underlying tab's search no longer appears.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code still mounts WorkspaceToolbar on Android when state.selectedTab is "threads" or "pullRequests". Those || branches remain true while Settings is open.

Make the tab checks conditional on Settings being closed:

tsx
1{enabled.length === 0 && !settingsOpen ? null : (
2 settingsOpen
3 ? Platform.OS === "ios"
4 : state.selectedTab === "threads" || state.selectedTab === "pullRequests"
5) ? (
6 <WorkspaceToolbar sidebar={sidebarNavigation} onNewTask={startNewTask} />
7) : (
8 <WorkspaceSectionToolbar onNewTask={startNewTask} showCompose={false} />
9)}

This selects WorkspaceSectionToolbar for Android Settings regardless of the underlying tab.

You're right, the earlier change still mounted WorkspaceToolbar on Android when Settings sat over Threads or PRs. Fixed: the tab checks now only apply while Settings is closed, so Android Settings always gets WorkspaceSectionToolbar.

@juliusmarminge Confirmed in the supplied code. When Settings is open on Android, the branch selects WorkspaceSectionToolbar regardless of the underlying tab. This addresses the finding.

After switching from Settings to Usage, the retained Settings toolbar still handles the global focusSearch command and dispatches search to its hidden list; on Duo, it can also toggle the sidebar.
