Problem

Mutable file-tree collections survived workspace switches and produced cached loading/error snapshots.

Change

Use immutable state keyed by workspace/environment, with scoped cancellation and refresh generations so stale requests cannot populate the next target.

Scope and approval

Maintainer-directed work requested by @juliusmarminge as part of the mobile Release performance and correctness audit. The requested scope for this PR is isolate file tree state by workspace. Publication was explicitly requested in the audit thread; merge approval remains separate.

Verification

Validation: 12 regressions failed first; 20 tests across compiler-enabled/disabled modes cover switching, loading, retry, refresh races, unmount and Strict Mode. Mobile typecheck/lint/format pass.

Prepared by GPT-6.1 Sol in the T3 Code Codex harness, with delegated high-reasoning audits and physical iPhone Release profiling where noted.

Takeover

Rebuilt mobile tree state keyed by environment/workspace, with immutable snapshots, visit-scoped requests, restoration and revalidation. Expansion, selection and reveal bookkeeping share the workspace lifetime; structured missing-root failures clear state, while transient failures preserve it. Retain up to eight workspaces and 64 coordinated paths per inactive workspace; preserve active visible listings. Web/desktop use independent state; restoration parity is outside this mobile PR. The original Problem wording and Verification/iPhone attribution above are preserved history as requested, superseded by this appendix: baseline collections were render-local, current tests total 10, and this takeover has no native-device proof. Prepared by GPT-6.1 Sol in the T3 Code Codex harness, with independent Codex reviews. PR remains unmerged.

Evidence

Verified head: 031cc6ed7d. Android before (merge-base) / after recordings: UNVERIFIED — no adb, emulator, android-emulator or SDK in PATH/standard SDK locations on fs-16. No server/emulator was started. iOS: UNVERIFIED on Linux. Synthetic tests share the src folder across targets with distinct first.ts/second.ts leaves; identical leaf-path collisions and real file modifications remain unverified. Tests run release-transformed hook/component logic under React DOM/jsdom using Expo's production iOS transform with React Compiler support; native views and query/transport are mocked. Native navigation and real local/remote transport remain unverified. Fixture matrix and evidence audit: Final fixture matrix and audit. Scoped validation: Final scoped validation log.

Verification log
  • Final head: 10/10 focused cases in the existing useFileTreeEntries.test.tsx; mobile typecheck, targeted lint/format across seven changed files, and diff checks pass.
  • Original 20 cases reduced to 4; main implementation failed all 4 and original PR head failed 2 restoration cases. Rebuild added meaningful regressions to 10; later fixes strengthened those cases without increasing the count.
  • Scope: isolation/restoration, immutable snapshots, stale completions, typed missing-root recovery, deleted selection, keyed browser remount collapse, hidden request churn, and departure with 133 paths expanded. Baseline/failing-first counts are phase-agent reports; current checks are in the linked log.
  • Review rounds 1 and 2: both FIX_FIRST; round 3: MERGE/FIX_FIRST for expanded offscreen retention; round 4: both MERGE at a23bf91eef. All confirmed findings fixed.
  • Merged main d14ace8233 by merge commit; no conflicts or changes to the seven reviewed files. Full PR: 7 files, +798/-96. No contracts/server/provider changes.
  • State is in-memory for mounted hook instances, not persisted across full hook/app/navigation unmounts. Cache eviction can discard old view history; it reloads when needed.
  • Evidence audit: PASS at the integrated head. Android/iOS capture unavailable and nonblocking; no remote machines or live userdata used.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR substantially changes the mobile file-tree’s runtime state, caching, selection, and request lifecycle rather than making a small isolated fix. Unresolved concerns remain around inspector-driven workspace identity and stale selection propagation.

Walkthrough

The mobile file-tree hook now retains workspace-scoped directory state, reconciles listings and search discoveries, and exposes selection and expansion controls. The file-tree views use those controls, and new tests cover request lifecycles, workspace retention, selection, and listing reconciliation.

Changes: Mobile file-tree state and selection

Layer / File(s)Summary
Workspace state and directory requests
apps/mobile/src/state/query.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
The hook caches directory state by workspace, bounds retained state, and tracks directory requests. Query results now expose success and failure values. Tests expect distinct loading snapshots, workspace isolation, stale-response protection, and bounded retention. The test file is added to the React test project.
Listing reconciliation and refresh
apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.test.tsx
The hook reconciles cached entries and search discoveries against listings, handles missing roots, and refreshes reachable directories. Tests cover root errors, search discoveries, and truncated and complete listings.
Controlled selection and expansion
apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/files/FileTreeBrowser.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/ThreadFilesRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/thread-file-navigator-pane.tsx
The hook provides selection and expansion controls to the browser. The browser reveals controlled selections and loads expanded directories. Route and navigator selection handlers record paths before navigation. The route passes cwd to the hook whenever file access is allowed.

A search result absent from a cached complete listing is treated as deleted, so reconciliation clears its selectedPath and prunes newly found directories and their loaded contents. deleted() only checks the cached listings and ignores searchData; preserve paths supported by search results or revalidate their parent before pruning them.

Do not pass the cwd: null selection to the inspector.

When the file inspector is active, ThreadFilesTreeScreen stores its outer selection in the [environmentId, null] cache. That cache has no root listing, so its selection is not reconciled. ThreadFileNavigatorPane then prefers this stale value over its own reconciled selection.

Use the pane's selection for the inspector:

3- entriesQuery.selectPath(path);
4- handleSelectFile(path);

6+ selectedPath={null}
7+ onSelectFile={handleSelectFile}

Do not remove ThreadFileScreen's outer update unconditionally. Its entriesQuery also controls the directory browser. Keep that update for directory routes, but skip it when a file is open:

2- entriesQuery.selectPath(path);

Keep the file-tree workspace active while the inspector is shown.

When the split viewport crosses the 820px inspector threshold, hasFileInspector changes while ThreadFilesTreeScreen remains mounted. This changes the hook input from the real cwd to null. The transition bounds the previous workspace with preserveVisible = false; with more than 64 inactive paths, it removes older entries and expansions. Returning to the real cwd also clears validation and calls refreshRoot(), which can reload the tree.

Use null only when file access is unavailable. Inspector visibility must not change the file-tree workspace identity.

Addressed the current concrete findings in 9991eb6389b: leaf-only search results now infer ancestor directories for retained-child traversal, and inspector visibility no longer changes the readable workspace to null. Removing explicit directory entries from the two existing search regressions failed before the fix; all 12 cases pass afterward. check:changed passes, including affected typechecks; React Doctor reports no findings.

The older stale inspector selection is already fixed in the current branch: the outer inspector receives null selection, and file selection updates the directory hook only for a directory target. No suppression directive is present in the current file-tree hook. Native UI verification remains unclaimed. The PR's breadth still requires maintainer judgment; these changes do not constitute human approval.

Implemented with GPT-6.1-sol through the T3 Code Codex harness.

Guard directory commits by refresh generation.

refresh() is reachable from the mobile refresh controls. If a directory continuation passes the abort check and refresh() runs before React applies its updater, the updater can still replace entries and prune discoveries for the same target with pre-refresh data. The stale data can remain visible when the replacement load fails.

apps/mobile/src/features/files/useFileTreeEntries.ts:495-514 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retain inferred ancestors for externally selected search results.

When relativePath is supplied as the external selection, a leaf-only search result can exist in snapshot.entries without directory ancestors. revealSelection therefore leaves those ancestors out of expandedPaths. Clearing search then stops traversing collapsed directories, so the selected file is no longer visible or cannot be revealed.

Retain the inferred ancestors in directories.discoveries when the selected path exists in the snapshot.
