Problem

Retained video players could keep playing outside visible content, and inactive PR tabs still requested thumbnails.

Change

Pause retained thread videos and videos in inactive PR sections; prevent asynchronous loading from starting hidden players. Keep mounted players and playback position, and stop thumbnail requests for inactive PR sections.

Scope and approval

Maintainer-directed work requested by @juliusmarminge as part of the mobile Release performance and correctness audit. The requested scope for this PR is pause videos outside visible thread and PR content. Publication was explicitly requested in the audit thread; merge approval remains separate.

Verification

Validation: three regressions failed first; six playback-hook tests, two thumbnail tests, mobile typecheck and lint/format pass. This covers pane/route visibility. Physical foreground-resume captures still showed advancing frames, so this does not claim to resolve all OS background playback behavior. No visual styling changes.

Prepared by GPT-6.1 Sol in the T3 Code Codex harness, with delegated high-reasoning audits and physical iPhone Release profiling where noted.

Takeover

Kept this as one PR on the original branch; merged main without rebasing. Retained the visibility wiring and shared playback hook; replaced hook-only tests with component behavior coverage and invalidated autoplay interrupted during loading. Return policy: playback stays paused until manually resumed, preserving the mounted player and position. Two fresh independent reviewers returned MERGE at 3252c2bf6b. Takeover by GPT-6.1 Sol through the T3 Code Codex harness.

Evidence

Current automated evidence: 10 playback/component cases plus 2 thumbnail cases pass. These use mocked navigation, AppState, and native players; they do not prove physical OS playback or audio behavior. No recordings or upload URLs were produced.

Android before/after capture is unverified: this VM lacks android-emulator, adb, emulator, and a configured SDK in checked locations. KVM exists but is inaccessible to the current process; no permissions were changed. iOS is unverified on this Linux VM. No synthetic server or emulator was started, and no live userdata was accessed.

Verification log
  • Tests before: 6 hook tests. Replaced with 7 component cases; reverting behavior produced 6 meaningful failures.
  • Implementation added 3 parameter-expanded cases for interrupted return and fullscreen exit; the two new regression scenarios failed first.
  • Current checks, run from apps/mobile: vp test run src/lib/useMediaVideoPlayback.test.tsx src/lib/videoThumbnails.test.ts — 12 passed.
  • Mobile typecheck, scoped formatting/lint and git diff --check passed; lint retains five existing React effect warnings.
  • main merged without conflicts at 3252c2bf6b.
  • Review round 1: two fresh read-only reviewers, both MERGE; neither found a confirmed blocker.
  • Evidence audit pass 1: component evidence supports the guard; native navigation, controls, audio, and platform parity remain unverified. Pass 2 required correcting the fullscreen fixture label to avoid claiming Android evidence; corrected before publication.
  • Existing green forge checks predate the takeover head and are not validation of this revision.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 68fb4b4

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused mobile media bug fix that pauses retained videos and avoids thumbnail work outside visible thread or PR content while preserving playback state. The new lifecycle guard is small, localized, and accompanied by component-level regression tests.

Walkthrough

The mobile video player now uses a shared hook to gate playback based on visibility, focus, pause state, app state, and fullscreen state. Pull-request and thread views pass visibility to the player. Tests cover playback and lifecycle conditions.

Changes: Mobile video playback

Layer / File(s)Summary
Playback eligibility and lifecycle
apps/mobile/src/lib/useMediaVideoPlayback.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/useMediaVideoPlayback.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
The hook gates playback using focus, pause, visibility, app state, and fullscreen state. It tracks playback for the media audio-session hold. Tests cover hidden playback, focus changes, app-state transitions, asynchronous loading, and fullscreen behavior. The Vite config includes the new test in the React test project.
Media player integration
apps/mobile/src/components/MediaVideoPlayer.tsx, scripts/effect-budget.json
MediaVideoPlayer accepts an optional visible prop and delegates playback and fullscreen handling to the hook. After source replacement, it requests playback only when playback was requested and loading was not aborted. The effect-budget entries reflect the component and hook.
Visibility propagation
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestMedia.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadMarkdownVideo.tsx
Pull-request list items provide visibility based on the active tab. Pull-request and thread media pass visibility to the player. Hidden pull-request media tiles receive a null thumbnail source.

Task cache cleanup test

Layer / File(s)Summary
Cleanup test service setup
infra/task-cache/src/Cleanup.test.ts
The cleanup test provides the same cache implementation with Effect.provideService instead of a layer.

Explanation

The description includes the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains the implementation, scope, test results, limitations, and unavailable native evidence. The scope statement does not include a direct issue or discussion link, but it provides maintainer direction and approval context, so the description is sufficiently complete.

The current description already has all four required template sections, including maintainer scope and concrete verification; the section warning refers to an older description. The visual-evidence limitation is valid: no before/after playback recording is attached. Existing physical foreground-resume captures did not establish a fix for OS background behavior, and the description explicitly excludes that claim. The implemented pane/route visibility behavior is covered by the six playback-hook and two thumbnail tests. No code findings were reported; leaving the evidence limitation visible for human review.

Invalidate retained rows when the active tab changes.

All tab lists stay mounted, but renderItem captures section and this list has no extraData. LegendList does not rerender retained rows when only the renderItem closure changes. A row can therefore keep PullRequestMediaVisibleContext set to true after its tab becomes inactive. Its video can continue playing, and in-flight thumbnail requests are not aborted.
