Renaming an SSH connection makes the desktop lose track of the server it started. It then treats that server as external and stops updating it, so a later desktop update can leave reconnects talking to an incompatible old server.

Verification follow-up pending: the evidence audit requested a cold macOS SSH installation without preinstalled archives and the reported 0.0.45-to-0.1.0 upgrade after an alias change. Existing recordings remain valid for 0.1.1-to-0.1.2 replacement; this PR is not ready until both new cases are checked.

The launcher now transfers ownership from the previous connection key only when its record identifies the same live process. The existing runner comparison then decides whether to reuse or replace it. Launch, pairing and stop share a recoverable lock to protect that transfer.

Servers left by launchers that recorded only a PID stay external. A PID alone cannot establish ownership safely.

Refs https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24095. The initial ownership-transfer approach came from https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/pull/21892 by @Gooder24.

Verified on this head in the Linux desktop against Ubuntu and the macOS desktop against a macOS SSH target. The recordings below show the alias change and subsequent runner replacement. Both Linux process identity and the Darwin ps fallback were exercised.

Linux desktop recordings

Head 7de13c669bf45b959a30fbd8b4b0bc3603b12161, physical corex, Ubuntu 26.04 x64 with GNOME Wayland and Electron 44.9.3. The reporter used Arch Linux/Wayland; both use the same desktop SSH implementation. The isolated SSH target matches the reported server setup: Ubuntu 24.04.5 x64, OpenSSH, dash, and real 0.1.1/0.1.2 release archives without Node installed. Both archives were checked against their release SHA256SUMS.

Each recording shows the original t3-old-name connection, adding a route to the same SSH target as t3-new-name, and reconnecting through that new alias with a different runner. The current UI exposes the second alias through Routes > Add route. This changes the SSH connection key, rather than the environment's display name. The original and new alias are visible in the route list and input fields.

Before, using main's launcher: the new alias becomes external, and reconnecting with the 0.1.2 runner leaves the same server on 0.1.1. Settings > Connections still shows Connected · 0.1.1 and an update arrow.

After, using this head: the new alias keeps ownership of the original live process. Reconnecting with the 0.1.2 runner replaces that server. Settings > Connections shows Connected without the old-version warning. This UI hides the remote version when it matches the client; the runtime record confirms 0.1.2 below.

macOS desktop recording

Head 7de13c669bf45b959a30fbd8b4b0bc3603b12161, physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1 build 26A434, arm64, Electron 44.9.3. The actual macOS desktop connects over OpenSSH to a separate task home on the same Mac. The unmodified SSH launcher uses real Darwin processes and /bin/ps.

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/665236dd-ce6d-4cb9-a18d-3295d75d2952

The 73-second native-window recording shows Settings > Connections with mac-original on 0.1.1, adding mac-renamed through Routes > Add route, and reconnecting through only mac-renamed after the runner changes to 0.1.2. The final row shows Connected with the new alias In use. The UI hides the remote version when it matches the client; the runtime record confirms 0.1.2.

The old key 0527c22adcadac9d lost its PID, managed marker and process-start record. The new key 70d7dcbdca76696e retained the original process identity, Thu Oct 29 13:49:38 2026, before the update. The replacement recorded Thu Oct 29 13:52:23 2026. Both matched actual LC_ALL=C TZ=UTC /bin/ps -p <pid> -o lstart= output. /proc was absent and the SSH target used only system binaries in PATH, so this exercised the Darwin fallback. The old PID was absent after replacement, with ps returning exit 1.

This run built the exact head locally on shiv with vp run build:desktop, exit 0, 5/5 tasks successful, Node 26.12.0. The desktop main bundle SHA256 was fb2ae87266c0ee76c9db53d9f9199d717a96cbf7e87f0812cb9e93c2fa140f5f, identical through both phases and to the Linux build. The SSH source blob was 5ea4231a05403d3381d3af40d5891da19b31fa09; source diff was empty.

The macOS fixture uses the same disclosed desktop version-metadata change from 0.1.1 to 0.1.2 as the Linux run. Real Darwin ARM64 release archives were verified against their published SHA256SUMS and preinstalled in the task remote home. An external Electron safeStorage shim stores only disposable test secrets as plaintext because the isolated home triggered a native Keychain prompt. The production desktop and SSH bundles were unchanged. The updated phase uses fresh isolated client state and preserves the old server across a forced client restart. Cuts remove idle setup and cross that restart. wrec recorded the actual native windows; the short clip combines those captures without synthetic frames or overlays. All captured processes and task state were cleaned up.

How the Linux upgrade was tested

The desktop, server and web bundles came from successful Boat job j_ae4zjwu5dobervalmwj3, stage desktop-evidence-build-exclude-artifacts, attempt 1 on the default worker. vp run build:desktop and the job both exited 0 on this exact head. The fixed desktop main bundle matches the artifact SHA256 fb2ae87266c0ee76c9db53d9f9199d717a96cbf7e87f0812cb9e93c2fa140f5f.

To select the old archive runner, the original phase uses that build with desktop package version metadata set to 0.1.1. Its frontend and bundled local server remain 0.1.2. The updated phase restores desktop metadata to 0.1.2. The fixed run does not alter the SSH implementation. The before comparison substitutes only buildRemoteLaunchScript from main at 5f1f604733c65b50ad6d289971103b1330e943bf in the same build, for both phases.

After connecting the original alias, the recording adds the new alias while the first server is still alive. Both phases use the actual desktop launcher. The app is then terminated to preserve the remote server across the simulated update. There is a cut at that restart. The updated phase uses fresh isolated client state and reconnects through the new alias, so an automatic reconnect under the old alias cannot update the server first. The before video also trims idle fixture setup. The videos capture actual Electron renderer frames through DevTools and encode them as H.264 MP4; they do not show the surrounding GNOME desktop.

SSH keys, client state, remote home and SSH daemon are isolated test fixtures. A task-local SSH-config wrapper and Electron plain-text secret-storage shim affect only this test state. This verifies archive replacement, not the historical 0.0.45 → 0.1.0 database migration.

Linux runtime results

text
1 Before: main launcher After: head 7de13c669b
2Original alias, runner 0.1.1 PID 2865, managed, v0.1.1 PID 3218, managed, v0.1.1
3New alias, same runner external; PID 2865 retained managed; PID 3218 retained
4New alias, runner 0.1.2 PID 2865 remains v0.1.1 PID 3521, managed, v0.1.2
5Original PID after update still running exited

The head run kept the identical Linux boot-ID/start-tick identity through the alias transfer. The old key's PID, managed marker and process-start files were removed; the new key held the same PID and identity. The subsequent version replacement wrote a new PID and identity under the new key.

vp test run packages/ssh/src/tunnel.test.ts on this head passed 28/28, Linux x64, Node 26.12.1, dash, in 20.44 seconds. It covers alias transfer/replacement, concurrent ownership, PID reuse, Linux clock corrections, legacy identity migration, stale locks, interrupted cleanup, cold-install waits and failure to capture a new child's identity. Current-head CI passes required lint, build/typecheck and test jobs. These checks supplement the client recordings.

Linux, macOS and Windows desktop clients all call launchOrReuseRemoteServer and buildRemoteLaunchScript in packages/ssh/src/tunnel.ts. The remote OS selects Linux identity or the Darwin ps fallback. Web, iOS and Android clients connect to an existing environment and do not launch desktop-managed SSH servers.

Limits and merge risk

The recordings verify ownership transfer and real runner replacement. They do not verify native macOS Keychain storage, the signed desktop installer or automatic updater, the macOS cold archive installation, or the historical 0.0.45 to 0.1.0 database migration. Those paths were outside this fixture.

The remote home filesystem must support hard links for the ownership lock. Older desktops do not participate in that lock, so concurrent ownership transfer between old and new launcher implementations is not guaranteed.

A different runner replaces the managed server and interrupts its active turns, including turns started by another client. The existing comparison tests equality, so an older desktop can also replace a newer server. Reverting removes future ownership transfers; it cannot restore interrupted turns.

Theo's triage of the earlier issue asked for the alias ownership defect to be tracked separately. Macroscope correctness and CodeRabbit pass, and the six GitHub review threads are resolved. Macroscope requests human review of the ownership transfer, locking and lifecycle scope. This diff changes only the SSH implementation and its tests, with no contracts, bundling or scroll changes.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code; investigation, tests, review and the signal-cleanup correction with GPT-6.1-sol through Codex.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR substantially changes the production SSH launcher: it transfers remote-server ownership across renamed connections, coordinates launch/pairing/stop operations with a recoverable global lock, and can terminate and replace managed servers. The behavior spans multiple existing paths and has significant process-lifecycle side effects beyond a small isolated fix.

Walkthrough

Remote launch, pairing, and stop operations now use a shared lock with a bounded wait. Launch validates managed process identity and can transfer eligible server ownership between SSH state directories. Stop signals only a verified managed process. SSH timeouts include the lock-wait budget.

Newly launched Linux servers avoid the reported clock-related identity problem. An older server’s ownership record could still be lost if its start-time value changes before migration; this bounded compatibility risk does not otherwise block merge.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and covers the Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains that renaming an SSH connection makes the desktop lose track of its running server, so later desktop updates can leave reconnects on an incompatible old server. The Change section states that ownership transfers only when the previous key's record matches the same live process, and that launch, pairing, and stop share a recoverable lock. Verification is detailed: Linux and macOS recordings, runtime transcripts, and a 28/28 tunnel test pass on the head commit. Scope is partly covered: the description cites issue 24095 and an earlier PR, and it discloses the Theo triage comment. It does not clearly show a maintainer approval comment for the direction and scope, which the template asks for. The Verification section also lists pending items: a cold macOS install without preinstalled archives and a 0.0.45-to-0.1.0 upgrade case are still unchecked, and the description says the PR is not ready until both are checked. Those gaps are disclosed, but the description does not say whether they block merge. The description is long and includes detail beyond the template, but it stays on topic.

Resolution

  1. In the Scope and approval section, link the triaged bug issue and the maintainer approval comment that approves this direction and scope. The description links issue 24095 and a Theo triage comment on issue 21681, but it does not show explicit maintainer approval of this ownership-transfer change. 2. State clearly whether the two pending verification cases (cold macOS SSH install without preinstalled archives, and the 0.0.45-to-0.1.0 upgrade after an alias change) block merge. If they do, complete and report them before requesting merge. 3. Move the statement that fresh CI and bot review are pending into the Verification section, with the current-head result once available. 4. Consider shortening the description so it follows the template sections directly. Move the long macOS runtime transcript into a collapsed details block or a linked artifact, which the description already partly does.

Compare against the running server’s runner, not the last written runner file.

If an update under the old state key fails after Line 561 writes run-t3.sh, the old server keeps running while that file describes the new runner. A launch under a new key then finds equal runner files, sets RUNNER_CHANGED=0, and keeps the old server. This recreates the persistent outdated-server state that this change aims to fix. Keep the runner identity associated with a successful server launch separate from the file prepared for the next launch.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @shivamhwp

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

This is real, but it is not new here: main already has it for a single state key. The launcher writes run-t3.sh before "$RUNNER_FILE" --version downloads the archive. If that download fails, set -e exits while the old server is still running and still recorded as managed. The next connect under the same key finds an identical runner file, sets RUNNER_CHANGED=0, and keeps the old server. This branch compares the old key's runner the same way main compares its own, so a rename neither adds nor widens that gap. Fixing it means recording which runner the live server came from, separate from the file written for the next launch, across every launch path. That is a separate fix from this issue, so I am keeping it out of this PR.

@shivamhwp You're right. The launcher replaces run-t3.sh before the archive download can fail, so the same-key path already has this gap. The cross-key comparison does not introduce it.

I withdraw this finding from this PR. Recording the running server’s runner identity belongs in a separate fix.

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Now addressed in 911969ca8f. The launcher keeps active-runner.sh separate from the runner prepared for launch or pairing, and updates that snapshot only after successful readiness. The focused snapshot regression passes. A real archive-preparation failure also preserved the existing process and active runner, then reconnected successfully on retry.

@shivamhwp The supplied code addresses this concern. Both same-key reuse and cross-key takeover compare against active-runner.sh. A new launch updates that snapshot only after readiness succeeds, and pairing leaves it unchanged.

Thanks for the fix in 911969ca8f and the reported regression checks. I did not rerun those checks.

Check the adopted server before terminating the current server.

If two state keys manage live servers, the default runtime file can identify the other server while this key still manages a healthy server. When the other server is alive but unready, these lines terminate the healthy server. The readiness check at Line 729 then fails, leaving this connection without its working server. Preserve the current server until adoption succeeds, and test this failure path. As per coding guidelines, “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.”

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @shivamhwp

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

Agreed, fixed in 86207892a5. The takeover now waits for the other key's server to answer before it changes anything, as the external-adoption path does. If that server doesn't answer, this key keeps its own server and record, and the other key keeps its record. I checked both cases on Linux with the real launch script and a fake server. With the other key's server stopped by SIGSTOP, the launch returned this key's own port, and both servers and both records stayed. After SIGCONT, the launch stopped this key's server and took over the other key's record.

@shivamhwp The supplied code confirms that wait_ready now succeeds before the launcher stops the current server or transfers ownership. If the probe fails, the launcher restores the current port and leaves both ownership records unchanged.

This addresses the finding. Your reported SIGSTOP/SIGCONT checks cover both the failed-adoption and successful-adoption paths.

Serialize ownership transfer across state keys.

If two launches use different new state keys, both can read the same previous managed PID before either launch removes the previous state. Both can then record that PID as managed under their own keys. If both runners require an update, both can proceed toward replacement under the shared default home.

Use a lock shared across state keys for the lookup, transfer, and replacement. Add a concurrent two-key test with different runners. The behavior when both launches reach serve still requires validation.

✅ Addressed in commit 2746302

[Opus 5.5][Claude Code] on behalf of shivam.

This race already exists on main, so I am keeping it out of this PR. The launch script takes no remote lock on any path. On main, two launches under different keys with no server running can both pick a port and start a server on the same default home. Two desktops under one key can both decide the runner changed and replace the same server. The desktop's per-connection lock covers none of these. Serializing the transfer needs a lock that every path takes (launch, adoption, replacement, stop), and that is its own change.

@shivamhwp Agreed on scope. The existing launch, replacement, and stop paths also lack a shared remote lock. Locking only ownership transfer would not solve the broader concurrency problem.

Writing the new ownership record before deleting the old record avoids an ownership gap. It does not serialize concurrent replacements, so the final server state under concurrent launches remains unverified.

I accept deferring shared locking to a separate change rather than requiring it in this PR. This is a deferred concern, not a completed fix.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for shared locking and concurrent-launch tests?

You are interacting with an AI system.

A narrow guard for the two-keys case that needs no shared lock: hand over the pid file with mv instead of writing a new one and removing the old one.

sh
1 if wait_ready "@@T3_REUSE_READY_TIMEOUT_MS@@" && mv "$PREVIOUS_STATE_DIR/pid" "$PID_FILE" 2>/dev/null; then

Then drop the printf … >"$PID_FILE" line and remove only $PREVIOUS_STATE_DIR/managed. A rename inside ~/.t3/ssh-launch is atomic. When two keys race for the same record, exactly one move succeeds, and only that key can stop or replace the server. The loser takes the existing else branch and keeps its own record. The other unlocked paths you listed stay as they are on main. I ran the same handover, rebased on main, against a fake t3 serve: after two keys launched together, exactly one pid file named the server.

Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, run from T3 Code, on behalf of @Gooder24.

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

The ownership transfer adds a duplicate-owner race, even though main also has other launch races. I reproduced it and fixed it in 911969ca8f. Launch, pairing and stop now share a remote-home lock; transfer prepares the destination and atomically moves its managed marker. Launch and stop require managed ownership, and transfer verifies the recorded process identity.

The focused race regression and real OpenSSH tests pass. Gated contenders using both identical and different release versions leave one owner. Former-owner stops preserve its server; the current owner's stop terminates it. Updated desktop evidence and the remaining mixed-launcher, delayed-key-reuse and SIGKILL limits are in the PR body.

Seems like the humans are having a chat. I'll hop back into my burrow for now. If you need me again, just tag @coderabbitai in a new comment, and I'll come hopping out!

packages/ssh/src/tunnel.ts:558-560 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a stable process-start value on Linux.

process_start stores and compares formatted ps lstart output. On Linux, a wall-clock correction can change that output for the same live PID. The mismatch path then clears managed ownership, and the stop path skips the kill before removing the ownership files. A renamed connection can therefore treat the still-running server as external and leave it on its old version.

Read /proc/$1/stat field 22 on Linux and keep the ps fallback for macOS. Accept an existing ps-formatted record once and rewrite it to the new format.

Assert that both script patches apply. Otherwise the test can hang instead of failing.

String.prototype.replace does nothing when the search string is missing. If either search string in tunnel.ts changes, the patched script has no transferring or waiting marker.

The first launch then never emits transferring. Deferred.await(firstAtTransfer) on Line 527 blocks until the test timeout. The forked first fiber's failure never reaches the main fiber. The timeout hides the real cause.

Check that each replacement changed the script. Use a small helper that throws when the pattern is absent.

Based on learnings: a race-condition test needs explicit synchronization points that the task reliably reaches. A missing marker makes that synchronization silently ineffective.

Addressed the Linux process-start finding from review 5645390568 in 7de7270b3e. Linux now records boot ID plus /proc field 22, preserving identity through wall-clock corrections. Matching legacy ps records migrate once; mismatches still prevent ownership transfer. macOS retains the ps fallback.

Both new regressions failed before the fix. On corex-t3, Linux x64, Node 26.12.1, vp run check:changed passes all 12 tunnel tests and the other affected-file checks. Current-head desktop builds were not rerun.

The failed CI Lint and aggregate Check at a7cba3d972 come from four React effect-budget errors in unrelated web files. Main at 03d1a90915 has the same four errors in run 40234908712.

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Fixed in c6c561423a and b8cc88525b, now published as f76e1e52c7 after merging main 5f1f604733. The shared lock records PID and process identity through an atomic hard link. A contender can recover a dead owner, reused PID or prior-boot record only after claiming a reclaim marker and rechecking the owner. Live legacy PID-only owners remain untouched. Cleanup clears ownership before unlinking, including the signal window identified by independent review.

The generated-script regressions cover killed owners and reclaimers, reused PIDs, reboot identity, live-owner preservation, competing recovery and signal cleanup. The stale-owner cases failed before the recovery patch. The gated signal case also failed against c6c561423a before its correction. All 20 tunnel tests pass on the final head under Linux x64, Node 26.12.1 and dash.

Final-head check:changed passes format, lint, four affected-package typechecks, the second knip check and all 20 tests. Its first knip check fails on main's unrelated agent-device dependency in scripts/package.json:15; the PR changes only the two SSH files. Fresh CI and bot reviews are pending. The PR body now discloses the hard-link requirement and the historical desktop evidence. Current-head macOS, Windows, full desktop behavior, mixed launchers and filesystems without hard links remain unverified.

Addressed the synchronization-marker nitpick from review 5645413919 in be9a908ec5. Both patch sites must exist before either competing launch starts, so a refactor reports the missing site instead of waiting for a marker that cannot arrive. Runtime code is unchanged.

Make the lock wait at least as long as the lock can be held.

A contender waits at most 20 seconds: 200 tries × 0.1 s (Line 626). The launch script gets the lock at Line 651 and keeps it until EXIT. While it holds the lock, it can run steps that take much longer than 20 seconds:

  • "$RUNNER_FILE" --version at Line 676. This runs the archive download (up to REMOTE_ARCHIVE_DOWNLOAD_SECONDS = 240) and the checksum fetch (30). It can also wait up to REMOTE_ARCHIVE_LOCK_WAIT_SECONDS = 360 for the install lock.
  • wait_ready "@@T3_READY_TIMEOUT_MS@@" at Line 856 and Line 881, which allow up to 60 s.

A second operation on the same remote home can fail with "Another SSH operation holds …" in these cases:

  • An update or first install is in progress on the first connection.
  • A slow server start is in progress on the first connection.

The second operation can be:

  • A launch under another alias.
  • A second desktop.
  • A stop from another connection.

A failed stop exits 1 and leaves that connection's server and ownership files in place. Before this change, these paths did not block each other, so this failure is new.

Two fixes would work:

  • Pass a wait limit to each script that matches its SSH timeout. For archive launch and pairing, that is REMOTE_ARCHIVE_LAUNCH_TIMEOUT_MS.
  • Run the archive download before taking the lock.

✅ Addressed in commit 1a19b2e

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Fixed in 1a19b2e2fa. Every state operation can wait for the existing 900-second cold archive-launch budget, rather than failing after 20 seconds. Launch, pairing and stop SSH deadlines add that wait to their own operation budget, so acquiring the lock near the deadline still leaves time to finish. The shared lock and stale-owner checks are unchanged.

A gated generated-script regression failed at the old 200-tick limit on f76e1e52c7 and now succeeds when the live holder finishes. Four TestClock cases also cover node/archive launch and pairing completing after the full lock wait. No test waits on real elapsed time. All 25 tunnel tests pass on Linux x64, Node 26.12.1 and dash. check:changed passes format, lint, affected-package typechecks, tests and its second knip pass; its first knip pass still fails on main's unrelated agent-device dependency. CI on f76e1e52c7 confirmed that same knip error, while build, typecheck, all test jobs and Macroscope correctness passed.

The PR body records the longer wait and current verification limits. Fresh CI and bot review are pending.

@shivamhwp The supplied code confirms the fix in 1a19b2e2fa. The shared lock now allows a 900-second wait. Launch, pairing, and stop SSH deadlines also reserve time for their own work after that wait.

This addresses the finding. The reported regression tests cover the original failure and the extended deadlines. I have not independently run those tests. Fresh CI remains pending.

Do not publish managed state without a process identity.

set -e does not stop this launch because process_start is followed by || true. The redirection creates an empty identity file before the function runs, then the launch writes the PID and managed marker anyway. The stop script skips identity validation when that file is empty and can kill a different process after PID reuse. Keep the legacy nonempty-record compatibility path, but fail the new launch before publishing state when identity recording fails.

  • fix(ssh): require identity before publishing managed state0ae4ef2

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Addressed the outside-diff identity-recording finding from review 5645629416 in 0ae4ef284e. A newly spawned server must return a successful, nonempty process identity before launch publishes its PID and managed marker. If the probe fails or returns no identity, launch removes partial ownership files, signals the captured child PID, waits for exit and reaps it, then fails. Legacy-record compatibility is unchanged.

Both generated-script regressions failed against 1a19b2e2fa because launch incorrectly succeeded. They now verify failure, child cleanup, absent ownership records and lock release. All 27 tunnel tests pass on Linux x64, Node 26.12.1 and dash. check:changed also passes format, lint, four affected-package typechecks and its second knip check. The first knip check still fails solely on main's unrelated agent-device dependency in scripts/package.json:15. Current-head desktop, macOS and Windows remain unverified, as the PR body discloses.

Keep ownership state until the child has stopped.

If the new server ignores SIGTERM or takes more than two seconds to stop, wait_for_pid_exit exits while the server remains live. Line 879 and this cleanup have already removed its ownership files. ✅ Addressed in commit 7de13c6

[gpt-6.1-sol][Codex] on behalf of shivam.

Fixed in 7de13c669b. The failed identity-probe path keeps state until its newly spawned child has exited and been reaped. It first sends SIGTERM and uses the existing bounded grace period. If that child remains live, it sends SIGKILL and waits for it. Only then does cleanup remove the state files. The forced fallback is enabled only for this launch's new child; existing managed-server shutdown behavior is unchanged.

A generated-script regression starts a real HTTP server that ignores SIGTERM. An explicit ready signal gates the failing identity probe, and the test advances the graceful-wait counter without real-time waiting. It failed against 0ae4ef284e because the child remained live. The corrected script exits with the intended launch error, leaves no live child or ownership files, and releases the lock. All 28 tunnel tests pass on Linux x64, Node 26.12.1 and dash. check:changed passes format, lint, four affected-package typechecks, tests and its second knip pass. The first knip pass retains the local checkout's inherited agent-device warning; CI on the preceding head passed both knip checks with newer main.

The PR body now records the new correction and test evidence. Fresh CI and review are pending.

@shivamhwp The supplied code addresses this finding. The identity-probe failure path now stops the new child before removing ownership files. The child-only fallback sends SIGKILL and waits if graceful shutdown fails.

The reported regression covers the SIGTERM-resistant child case. I have not independently run the tests. Fresh CI remains pending.
