When I want a teammate to look at a thread, I copy the agent's summary into Slack, paste their questions back into the thread, paste the answer back to them, and repeat. That relay is the whole problem.

Now you can share a thread with a guest link. The guest opens it in any browser with no account, enters a name, and watches the thread in the same chat timeline you see, live. They can send messages and small files, but each message waits at the end of your thread until you choose Send or Dismiss. Send runs it as a normal turn, shown with the guest's name.

Beta toggle

Guest links are off by default. Turn them on per machine in the new Settings → Beta page, which also takes the Working section toggle from General. While it is off, the server refuses new links and every guest request, open guest streams close at the next access check, and Share with guest is hidden in the sidebar, thread menu, and command palette. Links pause rather than end: one that has not expired works again when the setting is turned back on. In builds with T3 Connect, a user who is signed out sees a Sign in button in place of the switch, as the T3 Connect row does since #24636.

How it works

Reading the shared thread is open; writing is strict.

  • T3 Connect only. The link is https://<tunnel-host>/guest#<shareId>.<sig> (about 45 characters after #), served from the owner's environment, so the guest page is same-origin and always matches the server. Creating a link needs access:write, like a pairing link.
  • Guests are not sessions. Guest tokens never enter SessionStore, so no RPC, WebSocket, or MCP path accepts them. Every guest capability is a GuestShareService method behind one authorize check, exposed by thin routes under /api/guest, and each reads only the shared thread.
  • Revocation. Closing or replacing the link, archiving or deleting the thread, and expiry (24h) end the guest stream at once. Connect no longer serving the host closes it quietly, and every guest request is refused until it comes back. Open command output streams recheck access every 30 seconds.
  • State lives on the thread. thread.guestShare and one thread.guest-share-updated event, no migration. The invite is the share id plus a truncated HMAC under a server key. The session cookie is per share (t3_guest_<shareId>), so the browser that joined goes back in from a reload or the same link, and another browser cannot.
  • The owner's stream, the owner's timeline. /api/guest/stream sends the same bounded snapshot and wire events as the owner's thread subscription, plus a view event for the share and ended. The guest page applies them with the owner's projection reducer and ChatView's derivations, and renders MessagesTimeline with useTimelineFollow. Expanded rows load detail and live command output through /api/guest/item and /api/guest/command-output, which pass the owner's data through. Controls that act on the thread are absent, and /guest never builds the owner's environment connection; a browser test covers the guard.
  • HTML visuals. GET /api/guest/render serves a published html_render page in the thread with the asset route's sandbox CSP and nosniff, no-store.
  • Guest attribution. A sent guest message keeps context.guest = { name, text, shareId }, set only by the server, so web, mobile, the queue, and the guest page show the guest's own words with their name. The stored text stays "Message from guest X, sent by the owner: ...", because the server treats message text as a command in places (/compact, /logout) and a guest must not reach those. A queued guest message can be cancelled but not edited.
  • Files. Up to 4 files and 10 MB per message, 20 MB waiting per share. Images must be PNG, JPEG, GIF, or WebP and are checked by their first bytes; SVG and HEIC are refused. Names with direction-override characters are cleaned. The guest's session is checked before an upload is read. Files are stored as the thread's attachments, so a message can wait longer than the day-old pending-upload sweep. Send uses them as they are; dismissing, closing the link, archiving, or deleting the thread removes waiting files. A guest can load any file in the shared thread, never another thread's; anything that is not one of the four image types downloads as application/octet-stream.
  • Owner UI, web and mobile. Share with guest from the sidebar right-click menu, the thread menu, or the command palette. Waiting guest messages, with their files, sit at the end of the timeline with Send and Dismiss. The sidebar shows a Request status with a "Guest request" notification. While a guest waits, auto-settle skips the thread and the message wakes a snoozed thread, as a pending approval does.

What the guest sees

The thread as the owner sees it: messages and their files, replies and reasoning as they stream, plans, questions, approval prompts, and the agent's work, with command output when a row is expanded. The composer shows the thread's model, read-only. Not shown: diffs and interactive MCP app panels. The share dialog and the user guide say so.

Out of scope: more than one guest, editing a guest message, creating links on mobile, presence, LAN or Tailscale guest access. Known gap: in a forked thread, expanding a row inherited from the parent fails to load its detail.

Fixes after testing

A full test pass (server probes, the guest routes over HTTP, and the iOS simulator) found these, now fixed:

  • A guest file waiting more than a day was swept, so Send failed. Archive and delete left waiting files.
  • Cancelling a queued guest send left the guest seeing "Sent" forever; it now shows as dismissed.
  • A guest request on a settled thread stayed in Settled; it now unsettles it.
  • A short read error ended the guest page for good; it now reconnects.
  • A guest who had scrolled up never saw their own new message; it now scrolls into view.
  • Mobile: waiting guest messages were the list footer, and LegendList landed past the end when it changed. They are now feed rows.

Proof

  • Server: redeem once, send once, client-sent attribution dropped, queued guest edit rejected; the stream opens with the share and the owner's snapshot and ends on close, expiry, and Connect loss; item detail and command output only with a session and only for an item of the shared thread, and output ends once sharing stops; files of the shared thread load, another thread's do not; upload limits, type checks, the per-share cap, and cleanup after dismiss and close.
  • Web and mobile: the guest reducer applies the owner's snapshot and events once each; browser tests that the guest page renders the timeline without opening a WebSocket, expanding a command loads its output through the guest route, the view follows streaming replies and the guest's own message, and an attached file posts as form data; Request status order, queue controls.
  • A server test that turning the beta off refuses new links and guest requests, closes open streams, and that turning it back on lets the guest in again.
  • vp run check:changed passes on this commit.
  • End to end on a dev server through a real T3 Connect tunnel, in headless browsers: the owner created a link from the command palette; a guest joined, expanded a command and read its real output, and sent a message; the owner pressed Send in a second session; the agent's reply streamed into the guest's view. Mobile ran on an iOS simulator against a dev server (Connect stubbed): Request status, waiting messages with files, Send with a real Claude turn reading a guest image, Dismiss, and Stop sharing.

When the owner rolls back a turn, an already-open guest stream keeps the discarded turn's transcript items visible until the guest reloads. The run.updated branch updates runStatuses and may emit a view, but it never removes items for a run that is no longer visible; resnapshot or emit removals when run visibility changes, including for cancelled queued turns.

Declining for v1. Rollback is a rare owner action, and the guest gets the corrected transcript on the next reload or reconnect. Handling it live would mean rebuilding the guest snapshot mid-stream. Noted as a follow-up.

🔴 Critical guest/GuestShareService.ts:264

If the thread is deleted after authorize but before getThreadSnapshotWindow, stream still serves its transcript and stays open because this check only matches the share ID; the snapshot sequence also skips the thread.deleted event that would end the stream. Fixed in 4f5a0fbe8c. stream now rejects the snapshot when its thread is archived or deleted or the share changed, so a change between authorize and the snapshot read cannot leave a stream open. Changes after the snapshot already arrive on the live tail and end it.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a substantial guest-sharing product capability spanning new unauthenticated server routes, live thread streaming, uploads, orchestration behavior, and web/mobile UIs. It also adds a new product setting default and security-sensitive data-sharing paths, so the change warrants human review.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description is thorough and largely follows the template. It has a clear problem statement (copying thread context between people through Slack), a detailed change section describing the guest-link design, and extensive verification notes: server, web, and mobile tests, a vp run check:changed pass, and an end-to-end run through a real T3 Connect tunnel. Screenshots are embedded for the UI changes, as the template asks. The Scope and approval section is the weak point. It names the superseded PRs #24341, #24354, and #24393 but does not link a triaged issue or a maintainer approval comment for this direction and scope. The template also says the PR should solve one underlying problem. This PR bundles a beta settings page, the Working section move, mobile and web UI, and a guest read path, so the reviewer may ask whether it should be split. The template labels the Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification headings. The description uses different headings ("Beta toggle", "How it works", "What the guest sees", "Proof") and has no explicit "Problem" or "Scope and approval" heading.

Resolution

Add a "Scope and approval" section that links the triaged issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval of the direction and scope, including the approval comment. The PR bundles several features (guest sharing, the Beta settings page, the Working section move, and mobile UI). Either explain why these must ship together for one underlying problem, or split the PR. Rename or add the template headings "Problem", "Change", "Scope and approval", and "Verification" so the description matches the repository template. In "Verification", keep the focused test and manual check results and note anything not checked, such as the Macroscope and CodeRabbit checks. Confirm the "Known gap" in forked threads is acceptable for review. Also note the agent model and harness at the end, which the template asks for, if they are part of the work.

Refresh the time used for the guest-link status.

If the owner keeps this screen open past share.expiresAt, openedAt stays at its mount-time value. Line 113 then continues to show “Guest link active” after the link expires. Update the time at expiration, and refresh it when the screen becomes active.

Fixed in 3c62842ae1: the mobile bar sets a timer for expiresAt and re-renders when it passes, so the label flips to "Guest link expired" while the screen stays open.

@t3dotgg Thanks for confirming the fix in 3c62842ae1. The expiration timer addresses the stale label while the screen stays open.

Do not return cause text to the guest.

dispatchGuestCommand copies cause.cause into the GuestShareAccessError message when that value is a string. errorResponse in http.ts then sends this message to the guest browser. Orchestrator and projection errors can carry internal text in cause. A guest could read that text.

Use a fixed message per failure. If specific guest-facing wording is needed, map known error tags to fixed strings. Keep the original error out of the response.

Fixed in 3c62842ae1: GuestShareAccessError now has a closed reason set with fixed messages (get message()). Decider failures map to a reason only when they match the exported GUEST_FAILURE constants; any other cause is "rejected" with a fixed message, so no cause text reaches a guest.

Align server snooze state with pending guest messages.

A guest submission preserves snoozedUntil and snoozedAt, but pendingGuestMessageCount > 0 makes the client’s effectiveSnoozed return false. The server settlement candidate omits that count, so isSnoozed remains true and isAutoSettlementCandidate excludes the thread from settlement. Add the count to the settlement candidate and apply the same temporary wake condition in isSnoozed.

This must not clear the persisted snooze. The normal owner-send path clears it separately when the guest message becomes a sent message.

Fixed in 3c62842ae1, and it was worse than described: with no guest count, isAutoSettlementCandidate could settle a thread whose guest was waiting and hide the Request. The settlement candidate now carries pendingGuestMessageCount; isAutoSettlementCandidate refuses and isSnoozed returns false while it is positive. The stored snooze is unchanged. Test in ThreadSettlementService.test.ts.

@t3dotgg Thanks for the correction. My finding understated the impact: automatic settlement could hide a pending guest Request.

Your reported fix covers both guards while preserving the stored snooze. I have not independently verified commit 3c62842ae1 or run the regression test.

15Thread settlement is server-owned. The

17and inactivity settings without a connected client. Merge notifications invalidate cached PR state
18and trigger a check. A merge outside T3, such as an agent running `gh pr merge`, sends no
19notification, so the [PR sync reactor](../../apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/PullRequestSyncReactor.ts)
20re-reads a thread's open links when a run that ran a merge or close command ends. The guarded

Constrain GuestShareCreateError to fixed messages.

Preserve both distinct messages currently using reason: "internal" by using separate reason values.

decodeURIComponent throws a URIError for input such as #%. takeInviteCredential runs as the useState initializer in GuestPage. The throw reaches the root error view. The guest sees "Something went wrong" with a developer error report instead of the "This link has ended or is not valid." notice.

Include pending guest messages in canSnooze.

If a thread has a pending guest message and no other blocker, canSnooze returns true, but this new condition makes effectiveSnoozed return false. The snooze action is therefore offered for a thread that cannot appear snoozed. Add pendingGuestMessageCount to the canSnooze input and reject a positive count there.

Clear the retained invite after a successful join.

If the guest route remounts without a page reload, capturedInvite still contains the spent invite while joined resets to false. The guest sees the name form, and another Join attempt fails despite a valid session cookie. Clear the retained invite after redemption so a remount without a hash opens GuestSession.

A message composed in thread A can be queued to thread B after another tab redeems a B invite on the same host, and A’s composer then clears as if the message went to A. Clear guestShare when building a fork.

The source thread spread copies guestShare into the new thread. The fork is emitted under a new ID, so the owner can see and resolve copied pending guest messages on the fork. Resetting only guestShare preserves the copied history, createdBy, and fork lineage while preventing those pending messages from being carried into the fork.

Clear guestShare on the app-owned child.

The child builder spreads input.parentThread, so it copies the parent’s guestShare into the child. Pending messages from that share can then appear for the child and be sent or dismissed using the child thread ID. Sending one can start a guest-attributed turn on the child, although the guest credential targets only the parent.

Set guestShare to null after the spread. This preserves the other inherited thread fields and prevents the child from exposing or resolving the parent’s pending guest messages.

Closing an already-closed share is recorded as a rejected command.

decideGuestShareCommand returns the same thread for thread.guest-share.close when no share exists. Line 2683 then emits no event. dispatchWithReceiptEffect fails any command that produces no events, except for a short allowlist. The allowlist has no guest-share command. A second Stop sharing click, or a click after Connect loss closed the share, gets a rejected receipt and an error. The no-op should succeed.

Add thread.guest-share.close to the allowlist so the command records an accepted receipt.

Keep resolved guest messages visible after a page reload.

If a guest reloads after the owner sends a queued message, the new awaitingRowIds set is empty. When the snapshot has no transcript row yet, this filter hides the sent message until that row arrives. A dismissed message with no row also disappears. The reconnect test retains reducer state, so it does not cover a reload. Preserve enough per-guest state to identify unresolved rows across reloads, or include that placement information in the snapshot.

As per coding guidelines, “If you added a way in, add the way out and the way to see it.”

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @t3dotgg

Fixed in 398ef31f1c: the page keeps awaitingRowIds in sessionStorage (capped at 50 ids), so a reload in the same tab still shows a queued send or a dismissal until its row arrives. A new tab starts empty on purpose: without that page's own record, a resolved message with no row is old history outside the transcript window, and showing it at the end would misplace it.

🧩 Analysis chain

🏁 Script executed:

shell
1#!/bin/bash
2ast-grep outline apps/web/src/components/guest/GuestPage.tsx
3ast-grep outline apps/web/src/components/guest/guestStream.logic.ts
4rg -n -C 8 'sessionStorage|awaitingRowIds|storage|Storage' apps/web/src/components/guest
5git show --stat --oneline 398ef31f1c

Length of output: 23046

@t3dotgg Verified in the current code. GuestSession restores awaitingRowIds from sessionStorage and persists updates with a 50-ID cap. The reducer removes IDs when their transcript rows arrive.

This addresses the same-tab reload finding. Keeping resolved messages hidden without that tab’s placement record avoids moving old history to the transcript end. I did not run tests.

apps/web/src/components/guest/GuestPage.tsx:32-51 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh the invite when the guest URL changes.

capturedInvite survives same-document navigation and route re-entry. After the page reads invite-A, navigating to invite-B leaves GuestPage's state and the module cache pointing at invite-A. Submitting the name can therefore redeem invite-A's thread, or return invite-A's expired/redeemed-link error instead of joining invite-B.

Remove the module-level cache and refresh the pre-join credential when the router hash changes. Do not reset joined, so an already successful join keeps its existing session.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding (refresh the invite when the guest URL changes): fixed in b0fadd8343. Pasting another guest link into an open guest tab changes only the hash, so the page now reloads on hashchange and reads the new invite. A reload also clears the module-level capture. Removing the hash after reading uses replaceState, which does not fire hashchange.

apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts:6993-7008 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include pending guest files in the in-memory getThreadAttachmentIds.

The SQLite getThreadAttachmentIds now returns the attachment IDs on pending guestShare.messages (Lines 5283-5296). The layerMemory implementation still returns only message and HTML-render IDs. A test that uses layerMemory for archive or delete cleanup therefore keeps a waiting guest's files on disk, while production deletes them. The two stores disagree on the same contract.

Read only the thread record for guest attachments.

getThreadRecords(command.threadId, []) returns thread, including thread.guestShare, and skips the other projection records. The window path can read runs, attempts, nodes, messages, plans, checkpoints, and other records. It can also recurse into a fork source. This work runs for each dispatch with guestMessageId.

GuestShareService already uses getThreadRecords(..., []) for guest-share lookups. The ws.ts call uses it for asset project resolution, not for guest-share lookup.
