Users resuming 100k–150k-token Claude threads keep getting pushed into compaction after a break, and want to decide this per provider (raised in Discord).

CleanShot 2026-10-21 at 12 40 56@2x

What changed

Settings > General › Compact idle threads is now a select instead of a beta on/off switch. It is the default for every Claude instance:

  • When you return (default): today's behavior. The composer's Compact chip and Claude's native resume prompt.
  • Before the cache expires (beta): the background /compact that the old beta switch enabled.
  • Never: hides the Compact chip and answers Claude's resume_return dialog with "continue" without asking.

Each Claude instance's provider settings get the same select with a leading Use default option, so a work and a personal Claude account can behave differently. resolveIdleCompaction in contracts picks the instance override or falls back to the global value; the web chip, IdleCompactionService, and the Claude adapter's resume dialog all use it.

Migration: the setting keeps its compactIdleThreads key. A stored true decodes as Before the cache expires, false as When you return, so nobody loses their beta choice.

Surfaces

  • Web/desktop: General select plus the schema-driven provider settings form.
  • Mobile: has no Compact chip; the server-side dialog and idle timer changes apply to it too.
  • Other providers: idle compaction is Claude-only today; no change.

Docs: providers-claude.md documents the modes and the override; composer.md points there.

Tested with vp run check:changed (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests) plus contracts tests for the override resolution and the legacy decode.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR replaces the idle-compaction switch with global modes and per-Claude-instance overrides, changing server scheduling, resume prompts, and settings UI behavior. The default now becomes “When you return” instead of the prior disabled default, so the change warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Claude idle compaction is now configured per provider instance. Resume and idle-compaction behavior use that instance’s selected policy, and the former server-wide setting has been removed.

Changes: Claude idle compaction

Layer / File(s)Summary
Define per-instance compaction policy
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, docs/user/providers-claude.md, docs/user/composer.md
Claude settings define onReturn, beforeCacheExpires, and off, with onReturn as the default. The resolver and tests cover configured, unset, and missing instances. The old server-wide setting and its UI entry are removed. The documentation describes the per-provider setting and its modes.
Apply the selected policy
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/IdleCompactionService.ts
When the selected mode is off, the resume flow suppresses the compaction prompt and the Claude adapter returns continue. Idle compaction proceeds only when the mode is beforeCacheExpires; the prior server-wide setting check is removed.

Explanation

The title accurately identifies Claude idle compaction and per-instance overrides. The reference to a global default is somewhat imprecise because the global setting was removed, but the title remains clearly related to the main change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is on-topic but does not follow the required template and contains major conflicts with the implemented changes. It describes a retained global compactIdleThreads setting, migration behavior, and a General settings select, while the changes remove that global setting and place configuration on Claude provider instances.

Resolution

Rewrite the description using the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. Describe the actual per-instance Claude idleCompaction modes, the onReturn fallback, the removal of compactIdleThreads, the affected web/server/mobile behavior, and the focused test results. Remove claims about retaining the legacy key, global migration, and a General settings select. Add the required issue or approval rationale, and provide before/after UI evidence for the settings changes.

Limit the Never description to idle compaction.

“Never keeps the full history” overstates this mode. The Claude adapter still passes Auto-compact after to Claude when that setting is configured. Say that Never skips idle compaction and the resume prompt, while Claude's separate auto-compaction setting can still compact a conversation.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 0adf0a36394: Never now says it skips idle compaction and the resume prompt, and that Auto-compact after still applies.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The updated Never description correctly limits the setting to idle compaction and the resume prompt. It also clarifies that Auto-compact after still applies.

Correct the idle-compaction timing description.

The description says the prompt cache has expired before compaction. In beforeCacheExpires mode, IdleCompactionService schedules compaction before expiry. Describe both timing options so the setting does not mislead users.

Fixed in 0adf0a36394: the description (here and on the General row) now covers both timings: after you return, just before the prompt cache expires, or never.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The updated description covers both timings and the “Never” option, which addresses this finding.
