Fixes #20103.

Updating from T3 Code (Alpha).app to 0.1.0 quit the app and never brought it back. Switching update channels does the same thing. electron-builder names the .app after productName, so every label or channel change renames the bundle on update. Squirrel.Mac moves the installed app to the new name and then relaunches from the old path, which no longer exists. For hosts reached only over T3 Connect, this leaves the server offline until someone opens the app by hand.

The macOS bundle filename is now pinned through mac.executableName, so it no longer follows productName. Labels and channels (Beta, Nightly, or dropping the label later) still show everywhere the name is displayed, and updates now install in place. Windows and Linux artifacts are unchanged.

The pin is T3 Code (Beta) because 0.1.0 already moved most installs to that path, and users who re-pinned their Dock icon after this bug pointed it there. Installs still at T3 Code (Alpha).app or T3 Code (Nightly).app hit the failed relaunch one last time when they update to this build, unless T3 Code (Beta).app already sits beside them. Their current Squirrel does that rename, so nothing in a new build can prevent it. After that, they stay put.

Squirrel.Mac's rename rule: SQRLUpdater.m sets useUpdateBundleName whenever the running app's executable name matches its bundle folder name, which is always true for electron-builder output. ShipIt then renames the installed app to the update's executable name. An executable name that never changes keeps it in place.

Side-by-side installs: pinning the executable alone would make the nightly DMG ship T3 Code (Beta).app too, so a fresh nightly install would land on stable. The nightly DMG now presents the app as T3 Code (Nightly).app, while the executable inside stays T3 Code (Beta). Squirrel.Mac only renames a bundle whose folder matches its executable, so that install also updates in place. Stable and nightly still install beside each other, and the t3-code@nightly cask's app "T3 Code (Nightly).app" keeps working unchanged. Existing nightly installs next to stable also stay put, because ShipIt never renames onto a path that already exists (SQRLInstaller.m).

Evidence

Packaged an empty Electron 44.9.3 app as mac dir (arm64) with electron-builder 26.16.1 (the repo's versions) under each product name, and read the bundle name and Info.plist names from the output:

1# before (main): mac bundle follows productName
2main-stable bundle="T3 Code (Beta).app" CFBundleDisplayName="T3 Code (Beta)" CFBundleExecutable="T3 Code (Beta)"
3main-nightly bundle="T3 Code (Nightly).app" CFBundleDisplayName="T3 Code (Nightly)" CFBundleExecutable="T3 Code (Nightly)"
4# after (this PR): mac.executableName pinned to "T3 Code (Beta)"
5pr-stable bundle="T3 Code (Beta).app" CFBundleDisplayName="T3 Code (Beta)" CFBundleExecutable="T3 Code (Beta)"
6pr-nightly bundle="T3 Code (Beta).app" CFBundleDisplayName="T3 Code (Nightly)" CFBundleExecutable="T3 Code (Beta)"

A label or channel change no longer renames the bundle on disk. The displayed name still follows the channel, so there's nothing for Squirrel.Mac to move and it relaunches from the same path. scripts/build-desktop-artifact.test.ts checks that createBuildConfig gives stable and nightly the same mac bundle name (vp test run build-desktop-artifact.test.ts, passing).

Real T3 app through Squirrel.Mac (macOS 27.0.1, arm64). I built this branch with build-desktop-artifact.ts --mock-updates four times: stable 9.0.0, nightly 9.0.1, stable 9.0.2, and a nightly 8.9.0 built without the pin to stand in for today's installs. The test copy only changed the app ID, names, data folders and URL scheme, so it couldn't touch a real install. Every build was re-signed with one self-signed identity, so ShipIt checked each update against the installed app's designated requirement. The update came from a local feed, through the app's own setUpdateChannel → downloadUpdate → installUpdate bridge calls.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: macOS updates no longer make the app relaunch fail when the product label changes. It matches the objectives (pinning the macOS bundle name to T3 Code (Beta) so label or channel changes do not rename the installed app). The title follows conventional commit format and is specific to the fix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem (updating from Alpha to 0.1.0 quits the app and does not relaunch it), the change (pinning mac.executableName to T3 Code (Beta) and presenting the nightly DMG as T3 Code (Nightly).app), and verification (electron-builder bundle output comparison, a unit test, and a real-app Squirrel.Mac probe). It links issue #20103 and explains the scope. It does not follow the template's section headings exactly, and the Scope and approval section is only partly addressed because it cites an issue but does not show maintainer approval of direction. It also lists unchecked items (Developer ID signing, notarization, T3 Connect reconnection). Overall the content is mostly complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files are scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts, scripts/build-desktop-artifact.test.ts, docs/operations/release.md, and docs/operations/connect-setup.md. The build script diff adds the macOS-only mac.executableName pin and the MAC_BUNDLE_FILENAME constant. It also names the DMG contents entry with resolveDesktopProductName(version) plus .app. The DMG change connects to the objective. Without it, the pinned executable would make a nightly DMG install T3 Code (Beta).app and land on the stable path. The test and docs support the same macOS update objective. The diff shows no Windows or Linux configuration change. No unrelated product behavior is identified.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#20103] Objective 1, future macOS updates must not rename the installed bundle when a label or channel changes: met. At the reviewed head, scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts sets mac.executableName to MAC_BUNDLE_FILENAME ("T3 Code (Beta)") in createBuildConfig for every channel. scripts/build-desktop-artifact.test.ts asserts the pinned name for stable and nightly. Display names still follow the channel. Docs in docs/operations/release.md and docs/operations/connect-setup.md match the new path.

[#20103] Objective 2, the updated app relaunches from a valid path, and the existing Dock icon opens it, for installs at T3 Code (Alpha).app or T3 Code (Nightly).app: not met. The PR description states that these installs still hit the failed relaunch once when they update to this build, unless T3 Code (Beta).app already exists beside them. The new build does not change the transition behavior of the installed Squirrel.Mac. The only automated test checks the packaging config. It does not exercise Squirrel.Mac relaunch. The PR's real-app evidence covers only the pinned-to-pinned and side-by-side cases, not the reported Alpha transition. The reported failure therefore remains for the transition named in the issue title.

Resolution

Add a reviewable transition path so that existing T3 Code (Alpha).app and T3 Code (Nightly).app installs complete an update to this build and relaunch from a valid bundle path. The path must not depend on the installed Squirrel.Mac rename. Options include shipping the first transition build under the installed bundle name, or another change that the PR author documents and justifies. Add automated coverage for this transition where feasible. If maintainers accept the one-time failure as a known limitation, #20103 must narrow its expected behavior to state that limitation before this check can pass.

Assert the required filename, not only equality.

The current assertion accepts any common value. A future change to an incorrect value such as T3 Code would pass while breaking existing installation and Dock paths. Assert that the executable name is exactly T3 Code (Beta), then retain the stable/nightly equality check.

Verify a real macOS update before release.

The test checks only generated configuration. It does not package, sign, install, update, or relaunch a macOS app, so it cannot detect a Squirrel.Mac relaunch failure.

Update existing T3 Code (Alpha).app and T3 Code (Nightly).app installations to this build. Verify that the app relaunches and that the existing Dock entry still opens it.

Update the Homebrew casks before publishing this artifact.

executableName applies to every macOS build, so stable and nightly artifacts use T3 Code (Beta).app. The t3-code cask still declares T3 Code (Alpha).app, and t3-code@nightly still declares T3 Code (Nightly).app. Homebrew installation or upgrade can fail when the declared app path is absent from the downloaded artifact.

Update both casks, or coordinate their external changes to land before publishing.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

Partly valid. The stable cask (t3-code) already declares app "T3 Code (Beta).app" (0.1.0 renamed it), so the pin matches it. The nightly cask (t3-code@nightly) declares T3 Code (Nightly).app and will need its app stanza changed to T3 Code (Beta).app once a nightly from this branch ships. That cask lives in Homebrew/homebrew-cask, not this repo, so it's a release follow-up, now called out in the PR description. One pinned name for both channels is deliberate: stable and nightly are one app that switches channels in-app. They share the bundle ID com.t3tools.t3code and the t3code-v2 data directory, and a channel switch currently renames the bundle and hits the same failed relaunch.

@ishaanko Thanks for the clarification. My claim about the stable cask was incorrect: its T3 Code (Beta).app stanza already matches the pinned name.

The shared bundle name is intentional. Stable and nightly switch channels within the same app, so separate bundle names would preserve the relaunch failure.

The remaining concern is only the external nightly cask. Update its app stanza to T3 Code (Beta).app when publishing the first affected nightly. The PR-description note documents that follow-up; it does not complete the cask update.

Would you like a follow-up issue in this repository to track that release step?

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, stable and nightly are channels of one macOS app, not separate installations. They share bundle ID com.t3tools.t3code and data directory t3code-v2. scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts deliberately pins both channels to T3 Code (Beta).app so in-app channel switches do not rename the bundle and cause Squirrel.Mac relaunch failures. Homebrew cask definitions live in Homebrew/homebrew-cask, outside this repository.

On CodeRabbit's nitpicks:

  • Exact filename: done in 218046ee6. The test now asserts both channels produce exactly T3 Code (Beta).
  • Real macOS update before release: agreed that the test can't catch a Squirrel relaunch failure. The PR description records what was and wasn't checked, and Alpha and Nightly installs will hit one last rename on this update, as the description explains.

thanks @ishaanko. your fixed macOS bundle filename addresses the channel/label rename mechanism. i preserved both original commits and merged current main (beeb2159e1) into this branch, without rebasing or force-pushing. head: a8271635365ca1fb5c5fd1a4686683c1658098b1.

  • GitHub lint, build/typecheck, release smoke, and all eight server shards passed. the remaining test job and CodeRabbit were still pending at handoff.

unverified and still required: maintainer approval and a real signed macOS Squirrel update through the shipped client, including restart, remote host reconnection, and the existing Dock entry. this Linux VM cannot run Squirrel.Mac. test Beta-to-pinned-nightly and back to stable; separately check the one-time Alpha/Nightly-to-Beta migration, which this fix cannot retroactively prevent from renaming. no UI code changed, so no browser screenshots were taken.

@ishaanko: the external t3-code@nightly cask must point to T3 Code (Beta).app when the first affected nightly ships; this release follow-up is now in docs/operations/release.md. no external repository was changed.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

Thanks @maria-rcks, the trimmed docs and the release checklist note look good. I'll handle the t3-code@nightly cask when the first pinned nightly ships.

I ran a real Squirrel.Mac update on macOS 27.0.1 (arm64), since the Linux VM couldn't. I used a minimal probe app built with the repo's versions (Electron 44.9.3, electron-builder 26.16.1, electron-updater 6.8.9). Each build is signed with one throwaway self-signed cert, which gives the designated requirement certificate leaf = H"…", so ShipIt validates the update just as it does for Developer ID builds. Each build serves a local generic feed and calls quitAndInstall(true, true) like DesktopUpdates.ts. On every launch the app logs its version and process.execPath.

A. Unpinned install updates to the pinned build (the one-time Alpha/Nightly migration, same mechanism as #20103)

1installed before: SqTest (Nightly).app (CFBundleExecutable "SqTest (Nightly)", v1.0.0)
2installed after: SqTest (Beta).app (v2.0.0 on disk)
3v1.0.0 exe=".../SqTest (Nightly).app/Contents/MacOS/SqTest (Nightly)" downloaded, quitAndInstall(true, true)
4(no v2.0.0 launch within 90s, no process running)

Squirrel renames the bundle and doesn't relaunch. This matches the PR description: installs still on an unpinned name hit this once.

B. Pinned stable → pinned nightly → pinned stable (this PR)

1installed before/after: SqTest (Beta).app (unchanged both steps)
2v1.0.0 exe=".../SqTest (Beta).app/Contents/MacOS/SqTest (Beta)" downloaded, quitAndInstall(true, true)
3v2.0.0 exe=".../SqTest (Beta).app/Contents/MacOS/SqTest (Beta)" launched # display name "SqTest (Nightly)", ~5s later
4v2.0.0 ... downloaded, quitAndInstall(true, true)
5v3.0.0 exe=".../SqTest (Beta).app/Contents/MacOS/SqTest (Beta)" launched # display name "SqTest (Beta)", ~5s later

The bundle stays in place and relaunches after both channel switches.

Not covered: the real T3 Code binary with Developer ID signing and notarization, remote host reconnection after relaunch, and the Dock entry. The bundle path no longer changes, so the Dock entry should still resolve, but I didn't check it directly.

Probe harness

main.js:

js
1const { app } = require("electron");
2const { autoUpdater } = require("electron-updater");
3const fs = require("fs");
4const LOG = "/tmp/sqtest/run.log";
5const log = (m) =>
6 fs.appendFileSync(LOG, `${new Date().toISOString()} v${app.getVersion()} exe="${process.execPath}" ${m}\n`);
7app.on("window-all-closed", () => {});
8app.whenReady().then(() => {
9 log("launched");
10 autoUpdater.autoDownload = true;
11 autoUpdater.on("update-not-available", () => { log("up to date, quitting"); setTimeout(() => app.quit(), 500); });
12 autoUpdater.on("update-downloaded", () => { log("downloaded, quitAndInstall(true, true)"); setTimeout(() => autoUpdater.quitAndInstall(true, true), 500); });
13 autoUpdater.on("error", (e) => { log(`updater error ${e}`); setTimeout(() => app.quit(), 500); });
14 autoUpdater.checkForUpdates();
15});

Each build is electron-builder --mac dir --arm64 with appId: com.t3tools.sqtest, the given productName, and optionally mac.executableName. After building, I wrote app-update.yml (generic, http://127.0.0.1:8765/), signed with codesign --force --deep, zipped with ditto -c -k --sequesterRsrc --keepParent, and wrote latest-mac.yml with the zip's sha512 and size. Each step serves the next build from python3 -m http.server and launches the installed copy with open.

this change pins mac.executableName to T3 Code (Beta) for packaged macos apps. DesktopUpdates.ts disables automatic updates in development or unpackaged builds; production installation calls electron-updater quitAndInstall({ isSilent: true, isForceRunAfter: true }). linux and a dev web server cannot exercise squirrel.mac.

environment and source-inspection transcript. cafe reported 27 successful checks and no pending/failing checks; that is not runtime proof. no code changes or pushes.

Not verified

result: unverifiable on this vm. the original failure on main and the fix on this head both require macos, real packaged t3 builds and an update feed. no main reproduction, dependency installs, dev server, provider turns, packaging or local tests were performed. no screenshots or recordings were captured because no changed app behavior could be exercised.

remaining verification: signed/notarized real t3 stable -> nightly -> stable updates; bundle path stability and displayed labels; automatic relaunch; dock entry; backend and t3 connect reconnection with a real codex turn before/after; and existing alpha/nightly migration. the pr explicitly documents that the first migration from a differently named bundle can still fail to relaunch. the external nightly homebrew cask update also remains outside this verification. browser/provider smoke checks on linux would not establish any of those results.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

Thanks @maria-rcks. Some of that list was already run on macOS. The earlier Squirrel.Mac run is easy to miss above, so here is how it lines up:

Remaining itemStatus
Original failure on mainReproduced (run A). An unpinned (Nightly) bundle updating to a (Beta) build gets renamed and never relaunches. This is #20103's mechanism.
stable → nightly → stable, bundle path, relaunchVerified (run B). The bundle stays at (Beta).app through both switches, and each new version relaunches from the same execPath about 5s later.
Displayed labelsVerified. CFBundleDisplayName follows the channel while the bundle name stays pinned. Packaging output is in the PR description.
Existing Alpha/Nightly migrationReproduced in run A. It fails once, as the PR description says. A new build can't prevent that because the installed Squirrel does the rename.
Dock entryNot checked directly. The Dock stores the bundle path, and the path no longer changes.
Real signed and notarized T3 build, Connect reconnect, provider turnNot checked. This needs the Developer ID cert and the release feed. A relaunch is an ordinary app launch, and this PR doesn't touch backend startup or Connect.

The probe used a self-signed certificate, so ShipIt still checked the update's code signature against the installed app's designated requirement, the same check a Developer ID build gets. It didn't cover Gatekeeper or notarization. The last gap closes when a maintainer runs the first nightly built from this through the real feed.

no changed runtime behavior was verified in this run. inspected the diff, description, discussion, production updater guard and open PR head c394a37ac28b7e0526dc79e354d5f00aedb02b5a on this linux x86_64 boat vm. no listed PR commits are authored by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. cafe reports 27 successful checks, with none pending or failing; this is not runtime proof.

command and inspection transcript.

acknowledged the contributor macos probe results in the discussion: unpinned rename/relaunch failure and successful pinned stable -> nightly -> stable relaunches. those results were not reproduced here and used a minimal probe rather than the real t3 app.

Not verified

unverifiable on this vm. the only changed behavior is macos production packaging and squirrel.mac relaunch. linux cannot run that path, and DesktopUpdates.ts explicitly disables updates for development/unpackaged builds. no main reproduction, worktree setup, installs, dev server, screenshots, recordings, provider turns or local checks were performed. no code was changed or pushed.

still requires real signed/notarized t3 macos builds and an update feed: stable -> nightly -> stable through the shipped client, bundle path and display labels, automatic relaunch, existing dock entry, t3 connect reconnection, and a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn before/after. the first migration from differently named alpha/nightly bundles remains a documented relaunch limitation. external nightly homebrew cask coordination was not verified. a linux web/provider smoke check would not establish these results.

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

merge-review requirements remain blocked at head c394a37ac28b7e0526dc79e354d5f00aedb02b5a. no code changed or pushed in this pass.

both macos channels use T3 Code (Beta).app. the current external nightly cask still declares T3 Code (Nightly).app (checked today at version 0.1.6-nightly.20261031.3956). simply changing that declaration to the stable installation path does not establish safe installation and updates when both channels are installed. the migration needs to protect the existing stable app as well as match the downloaded bundle.

the existing contributor Squirrel probe is useful evidence, but it is a minimal app rather than the real packaged T3 app. this linux x86_64 vm cannot reproduce the required macos production updater relaunch. that requirement remains unverified, along with side-by-side installation/update safety and the coordinated cask migration.

current checks have no failures; the CI run's --log-failed output is empty. github reports the head mergeable. i have not merged main or started another CI wave because the required packaging/migration change must be settled first. this is not ready to merge.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

Thanks @maria-rcks, the side-by-side point was right. With only the pin, the nightly DMG would also ship T3 Code (Beta).app, so a fresh nightly install would land on stable. Pushed in 5de1613f70, after merging main:

  • The nightly DMG now presents the app as T3 Code (Nightly).app (dmg.contents[0].name), while the executable inside stays T3 Code (Beta). Squirrel.Mac only renames an install whose folder name matches its executable, so a nightly installed this way updates in place, including across channel switches. Stable and nightly still install beside each other.
  • No cask migration is needed. t3-code@nightly keeps app "T3 Code (Nightly).app", and the DMG it downloads contains exactly that name. I dropped the cask step from release.md.
  • Existing nightly installs beside stable are protected. In SQRLInstaller.m, renamedTargetIfNeededWithTargetURL refuses to rename onto a path that already exists ("If there's already something there then don't rename to it."). Such an install updates in place and relaunches.

I also ran the real T3 app through Squirrel.Mac on macOS 27.0.1 rather than the minimal probe. This branch was built with build-desktop-artifact.ts --mock-updates as stable 9.0.0, nightly 9.0.1 and stable 9.0.2, plus a nightly built without the pin to stand in for today's installs. The only patch to the test copy changed the app ID, names, data folders and URL scheme, so it couldn't touch a real install. Every build was re-signed with one identity, so ShipIt checked the installed app's designated requirement. Updates went through the app's own setUpdateChannel(channel, minimumVersion) → downloadUpdate() → installUpdate(version) bridge calls.

Document migration for pre-pinned nightly installations.

An old nightly installation has matching executable and bundle names, so Squirrel enables bundle-name replacement. The Beta-named update can move it to T3 Code (Beta).app.

The nightly cask still targets T3 Code (Nightly).app. During a cask reinstall or upgrade, Homebrew force-uninstalls the old artifact; its missing-target path returns without removing the renamed Beta bundle, then the install can place another Nightly app. A normal uninstall can raise on the missing target and also leave the Beta bundle behind.

Update the release note with a one-time migration instruction:

  • docs(release): note the one-time move for lone pre-pin nightly installs7242402

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

@coderabbitai on the outside-diff note about pre-pinned nightly installs: valid, done in 7242402cb9. This is the lone-nightly case from the real-app run, scenario 4. A nightly installed before the pin, with no stable app beside it, moves to T3 Code (Beta).app once, which leaves the cask's T3 Code (Nightly).app missing. release.md now asks the release notes for that first nightly to say brew reinstall --cask t3-code@nightly, then delete the moved T3 Code (Beta).app. Nightly installs that already sit beside stable aren't affected, because ShipIt won't rename onto an existing path.

@ishaanko Confirmed in 7242402cb9. docs/operations/release.md now documents the lone pre-pinned nightly case and the recovery order: run brew reinstall --cask t3-code@nightly, then delete the moved T3 Code (Beta).app.

This addresses the release-note finding. It documents recovery; it does not remove the one-time relaunch failure.
