Claude children started by delegate_task are their own SDK sessions, so Claude Code gives them the main-conversation prompt cache TTL (1h on a subscription). Native subagents follow subagentPromptCacheTtl. No Claude setting changed the TTL for delegated children alone. Users who wanted 5m children had to move every parent thread to 5m too. Closes #22749.

Delegated child threads now follow the user's Claude subagentPromptCacheTtl, read the same way Claude Code reads it: CLAUDE_CODE_SUBAGENT_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL, then the user, project, and local settings, with the instance's CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR respected. T3 passes that value to the child as CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL. When the setting is unset, nothing changes and Anthropic's default applies. An explicit CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL on the provider instance still wins.

We did not force 5m. Our fleet logs show that 1h saves about 9.5% for long-running children (data), while short child loops do better on 5m.

Proof: a focused test covers child, root, fork, unset, and override cases. A Node check confirmed that the SDK's resolveSettings returns subagentPromptCacheTtl from project and user settings. vp run check:changed passes.

Claude queries for subagent threads now resolve and apply a configured prompt-cache TTL. Root and forked threads remain unchanged. Existing CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL values take precedence.

Explanation

The reported changes are limited to Claude query environment resolution and focused runtime-policy tests. These changes directly support issue #22749. No unrelated implementation or test changes are shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #22749 requires delegated same-model child work to match Claude Code native subagent cache behavior and avoid the higher default cost. The implementation applies CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL only when subagentPromptCacheTtl is resolved. When that setting is unset, it leaves the environment unchanged, so an SDK child can retain Anthropic's 1-hour default while a native subagent uses 5 minutes. The tests cover the unset helper input, but they do not establish parity for the unset user setting.

Resolution

Set the delegated child TTL to the native subagent default when no Claude subagentPromptCacheTtl is configured, while preserving an explicit provider-instance CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL override and the existing parent and fork behavior.

Cover the adapter wiring in the cache-TTL test.

The test calls claudeQueryEnvironment directly, so it passes even if the adapter stops passing the derived environment to the query. That regression would make delegated children use the 1-hour cache instead of the intended 5-minute cache. Add an adapter-level assertion using the existing fake queryRunner.open harness.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚑ Quick win

Default delegated children to the 5-minute TTL.

When no subagent TTL setting exists, this resolver returns undefined. claudeQueryEnvironment then leaves a delegated child's environment unchanged, so the common unconfigured case does not receive the requested 5m override. Return "5m" after the configured sources are exhausted. Keep the existing explicit CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL precedence.

Note

πŸ€– Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Not changing this. The default is meant to match Anthropic's: with no setting, T3 does not override the TTL Claude Code picks. Our fleet logs also show that a forced 5m default raises delegated child input cost by about 9.5% for long-running children (data). Users who want 5m children set subagentPromptCacheTtl: "5m".

@t3dotgg Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw this finding. The current code matches the intended behavior: without a configured subagent TTL, T3 leaves Claude Code’s TTL unchanged. Users can select "5m" through subagentPromptCacheTtl.

5Learning: In apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, delegated Claude children intentionally preserve Claude Code's default prompt-cache TTL when no subagent TTL is configured. Do not recommend a forced "5m" fallback. Users can configure subagentPromptCacheTtl: "5m"; an explicit CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL environment value retains precedence.
