test(server): split replay fixtures into per-provider files#22717
Problem
OrchestratorReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts ran all 141 replay fixtures for 8 providers in one file. A focused run took 82 s on BeeBox (107 s on Mainbook), and it was the heaviest entry in the shard weights (44.6 s), so the weighted sequencer could not spread it across CI shards.
Change
- The shared runner (transcript reading, workspace materialization, shared output assertions) moves to
testkit/ProviderReplayFixtures.ts, unchanged. - One thin test file per provider: Codex, Cursor, Grok, AcpRegistry, OpenCode, Pi, Muse. The Claude fixtures join the existing
ClaudeReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts. Each file loads only its own adapter harness. - Provider-specific tests move with their provider: ACP model-write tests to AcpRegistry, Cursor
restart_activeto Cursor, the undecodable execution-start tests to OpenCode, and the background-subagent tests to Claude. - Assertions and test titles are unchanged. Loading
ProviderReplayFixtures.tsthrows if a fixture uses a driver that has no test file, so a new driver cannot be skipped silently. - Shard weights: the update script reruns the full server suite, so I did not run it. I split the old 44.6 s plus the existing Claude file's 2.7 s across the 8 files by each file's measured local share.
No warning for unweighted files: the script drops files under 0.5 s on purpose, so about half the files have no weight by design, and the warning would always fire.
Verification
All on BeeBox (Linux x64, 16 cores), vp test run <file>:
| File | Tests | Wall | In file | New weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Before: OrchestratorReplayFixtures | 141 | 82.5 s | 75.3 s | 44.6 |
| Claude (incl. 1 existing test) | 38 | 28.1 s | 21.9 s | 13.7 |
| Codex | 24 | 17.2 s | 10.2 s | 6.4 |
| OpenCode | 22 | 15.5 s | 9.2 s | 5.8 |
| Grok | 16 | 16.9 s | 8.1 s | 5.1 |
| AcpRegistry | 15 | 13.8 s | 7.6 s | 4.8 |
| Cursor | 11 | 17.1 s | 7.7 s | 4.8 |
| Pi | 8 | 14.2 s | 6.8 s | 4.3 |
| Muse | 8 | 14.3 s | 3.9 s | 2.4 |
- 142 tests pass = 141 from the old file + 1 already in the Claude file. A title diff of the before and after JSON reports shows no missing tests.
- Slowest new file: Claude, 28.1 s wall. It is under 30 s, so I did not split it.
- All 8 files in one local run take 90 s, because the server config sets
fileParallelism: false. The extra ~8 s is per-file startup. CI shards and focused runs get the gain. vpr typecheckinapps/serverandvp linton the changed files pass.

๐ Walkthrough
The replay integration tests now use shared fixture utilities and provider-specific test modules. The suites exercise standard provider fixtures and selected ACP, Claude, Cursor, and OpenCode scenarios. Shard weights now include the provider-specific suites.

This is a test-only refactor. The remaining concern is that some regression tests could silently stop running if their fixture is renamed. It is a bounded follow-up, so the change is mergeable.

Make a missing fixture fail the suite instead of skipping its regression tests.
The block at Line 114 registers its three tests only when findReplayFixture("claude_background_subagent_after_root") returns a fixture. If someone renames or removes that fixture, the suite drops the Bash streaming test and both #16486 regression cases. No test fails, and CI still reports success.
ProviderReplayFixtures.ts (Lines 25-27) already guards against this exact failure for unmapped drivers. That module comment says a fixture that "would silently never run" must make loading fail. The lookups in these files should follow the same rule:
CursorReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts(Lines 16-19).OpenCodeReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts(Lines 39-43), which returns[]when a fixture is missing.

Another option is to make findReplayFixture throw when the name has no match. That fixes all three files at once.
