The server database grows without bound. Every streaming update stays in orchestration_events forever, next to projections that already hold the current state. On one real install, statev2.sqlite reached 12.5 GB and was still growing. Every update also backs up the whole file, so updates got slow too.

Compaction now also deletes thread events older than 24 hours. Projections become the record for that history. Measured on a clone of that database: 12.47 GB → 4.45 GB (−64%), and every thread reads back the same.

How it works

  • Retention rule. compactEventStore deletes v2 thread events older than 24 hours. It keeps these anchors, because other readers still need them:

    • thread.created and thread.deleted
    • each stream's newest event (high waters, stream versions, thread find)
    • running run.updated events (CodexUsageHistory reads each attempt's first one; keeping all of them costs about one row per attempt)
    • full-prompt rows that slimmed payloads point to
    • events behind a command receipt (retry results)
    • threads with an unfinished legacy import

Project events are never pruned. The existing supersession rules are unchanged. Every check runs per row inside the bounded 50-row page query on the reader, so there is no full-table pre-scan.

  • Replay floor. Each deletion batch raises a per-thread replay_floor in the same transaction (new table, migration 70).

    • A thread resume from below the floor gets the snapshot it already gets when a replay is too large. A deleted thread replays its retained tombstone instead.
    • A shell resume from below MAX(floor) gets a snapshot. The bounded shell replay is collected before it is sent, so a pass that commits during the read still falls back to a snapshot.
    • Floor reads run on the reader connection. No client or contract changes.
  • Pacing. The background pass rests between pages at a 10% duty cycle, using the pacer from #20877 (credit: @JustYannicc). It is passed through a CompactionPacer context reference, so offline t3 doctor and tests still run at full speed. Without pacing, the first pass on a large database stalled foreground writes for up to 2.2 s behind WAL checkpoints.

  • Older schemas. Without the floor table (for example, a newer CLI's doctor on a database whose server never ran migration 70), retention stays off and only supersession runs.

  • Rebuild refuses inside its transaction once anything has been pruned. It has no production callers.

  • Upgrade timing. The compaction marker is renamed, so the first pass starts about a minute after upgrade.

  • Docs. docs/internals/overview.md says that projections are the record below the floor. The user guide warns against downgrading to a version from before this change.

Proof

All on clones of the real database, migrated by this branch's migrator. The live database was never opened for writing.

  • Size: an online pass, then VACUUM: 12,470,214,656 → 4,451,000,320 bytes. It deleted 1,579,455 events. quick_check passes, and there are zero dangling prompt references.

  • Read parity: a harness drives the real ProjectionStore for all 862 threads: getThreadSnapshot, the bounded getThreadSnapshotWindow, getTurnStartHistory, getCheckpointContext, getThreadShell, and getMessageCount, plus getShellSnapshot. The output is byte-identical to the unpruned clone.

  • Online latency. Production SQLite layer, with a foreground write and a reader query every 50 ms during the first pass:

    write p99write maxread maxfirst pass
    no compaction (control)1.2 ms2.1 ms57 ms
    unpaced28 ms2,220 ms66 ms2 min
    paced (this PR)1.8 ms15.4 ms57 ms18 min, background

A later pass over the pruned database takes 26 s (write max 2.5 ms).

  • Tests:

    • every anchor class is kept and the floor is set
    • projections are unchanged and verify still passes
    • rebuild is refused
    • resume below the floor gets a snapshot; resume at the floor replays
    • a deleted thread replays its tombstone
    • shell resume below the floor gets a snapshot
    • retention stays off without the floor table
    • the background pass rests between pages and records completion only after it

Each of these fails when its guard is removed.

Upgrade and rollback

  • The launcher's pre-update backup covers the migration only. It is discarded when the new server commits, before the first prune starts. Pruning is not reversible from that backup.
  • A failed update's rollback restores that backup, which is from before migration 70, so it is safe.
  • Downgrading to a build from before this change, onto a pruned database, is unsupported: old builds ignore floors. The user guide says so.
  • The file shrinks online at 4 MiB per minute. t3 doctor returns the freed space right away once the first pass has run, and Settings > Storage suggests it.

Related PRs

  • #20877: its pacer is folded in here. Its reader-side discovery is already on main.
  • #22548: after retention, it only acts on the last 24 hours (about 47 MB on the clone).
  • #23211: independent; needs its migration renumbered.

Walkthrough

Compaction now removes eligible thread events older than 24 hours and records replay floors. Replay requests below a floor use snapshots where the thread still exists. The migration, compaction pacing, rebuild behavior, tests, and retention documentation are also updated.

Compaction prunes eligible expired thread events, preserves anchors, and records replay floors in the deletion transaction. Rebuild fails when retention rows exist. Compaction pages are paced, and its completion marker is renamed. Tests cover retention, replay, compatibility without the table, and pacing. Documentation describes retention and downgrade constraints; the CLI completion message refers to old history events.

Warn users that a downgrade after automatic cleanup is unsupported.

This paragraph now says that T3 Code deletes history older than a day. The same guide tells users they can run --allow-downgrade to move to an older version (Line 33). It gives no warning about that path. The PR objectives say that a downgrade onto a pruned database is unsupported. docs/internals/overview.md says that a build from before retention "must not open a pruned database". A build from before retention ignores replay floors. That build can replay incomplete history to clients, and it can rebuild projections from a log with gaps. A user who follows this guide has no way to learn about this risk. Add the warning here, next to the retention statement, or at the --allow-downgrade text.

Migrate the rebuild caller through migration 68.

The migration-66 test runs maintenance.rebuild before creating orchestration_v2_event_retention. SQLite then raises no such table, which the method maps to ProjectionMaintenanceError.

✅ Addressed in commit afdca02

Note

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

Fixed in afdca024b5. The guard checks sqlite_master first and treats a missing floor table as nothing pruned, so the 064/066 migration tests (which rebuild before migration 68) pass. It still refuses inside the rebuild transaction, before the first DELETE, once any floor exists. All 9 test files that call rebuild pass (167 tests).

@t3dotgg The supplied code confirms the fix. If the retention table is absent, rebuild proceeds. If the table contains a replay floor, rebuild fails inside the transaction before any DELETE.

This addresses the finding without changing the migration-64/66 test setup. I did not independently rerun the reported tests.

apps/server/src/ws.ts:931-954 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the tombstone when bounded replay selects a snapshot.

When replay exceeds the event or byte limit, both stats and decideThreadResume call snapshotThenLive() without checking whether the thread has a shell. A deleted thread has no shell, but getThreadSnapshot still returns its deleted projection. The snapshot advances snapshotSequence past thread.deleted, so the client does not receive the tombstone. The client therefore calls setThread instead of setDeleted.

Use a bounded eventType: "thread.deleted" read for deleted threads. Use the snapshot path only when threadShellExists is true. Apply this to both snapshot decisions.

Declining the outside-diff ws.ts:931-954 finding (deleted thread + over-budget replay picks a snapshot) for this PR: it is existing behavior on main, not introduced here. Both over-budget snapshotThenLive() branches are unchanged from main (stats.eventCount > THREAD_RESUME_MAX_REPLAY_EVENTS and decideThreadResume). This PR only adds the replay-floor checks, and its new below-floor branch already replays the retained thread.deleted tombstone for deleted threads (covered in FoundationPersistence.test.ts). Retention also shrinks replay ranges, so the over-budget path gets hit less often. Worth a separate fix if it shows up in practice.

Preserve the specific rebuild refusal through mapError.

rebuild declares ProjectionMaintenanceError as its error channel. The new refusal already uses that type, but mapError("rebuild") wraps it and replaces its top-level operation with "rebuild".

No production direct rebuild caller currently displays or branches on operation; the inspected direct callers are tests. This is a narrow diagnostic concern, not a doctor-path failure. The translation rule has no service-boundary exception for re-wrapping errors already in the target channel.

Declining the ProjectionMaintenance.ts:148-152 nitpick (re-wrapping the rebuild refusal in mapError("rebuild")). The refusal survives intact as cause, rebuild has no production callers, and no caller branches on operation. Not worth widening the shared mapError helper in this PR.

  • perf(server): prune thread event history older than a day5e6b746
Synced from GitHub

Data from two self-hosted servers on 0.1.3-nightly.20261023.3566, in case it helps the approval call. Agent-heavy use (delegated tasks), remote clients over T3 Connect.

  • Size: statev2.sqlite 25.7 GB (host A) and 16.2 GB (host B).
  • Growth: the event log grows ~1.1 GB of payload per day on host A (7.8 GB in the 7 days since the V2 cutover; 99% of events are newer than that).
  • Where the bytes are (host A, dbstat): orchestration_events plus its indexes are 15.7 of 25.7 GB (61%). turn-item.updated (1.14 M rows, 5.16 GB) and node.updated (0.98 M rows, 1.27 GB) are 82% of event payload. 1,137,602 turn-item.updated events cover only 645,916 distinct items.
  • Age (host A, thread events): <1 day 0.61 GB, 1–3 days 3.96 GB, 3–7 days 3.18 GB, >7 days 0.12 GB. A one-day cutoff would cover ~7.3 of 7.9 GB of thread-event payload.
  • Archiving does not replace retention: archived and deleted threads hold only 13% of event bytes (1.04 GB). We archived ~4,000 finished threads per host; it sped up shell reads (1,358 → 311 ms) but did not shrink the event log.
  • Why size matters beyond disk: startup waits on V2 orchestration recovery, which took 57–88 s on host A (n=4 restarts) and 40 s on host B. HTTP and the T3 Connect tunnel are unavailable for that time, so each restart cuts remote clients off for 1–1.5 min.
  • With auto_vacuum=0 and freelist 0, 5.23 GB (20%) is unused space inside pages, so deletes alone will not shrink the file until an offline VACUUM (t3 doctor --fix).

We'd take this as soon as it lands.

Another data point for the approval call, from a heavier install: T3 Code 0.1.2 (desktop, Linux x86_64), running 25–30 delegated Codex and OpenCode threads at once for long stretches.

  • statev2.sqlite: 117 GB after about three weeks (first event 2026-10-03). 4 KiB pages, 0.36 GB freelist. 1,703 threads, 18.3 million rows in orchestration_events.
  • Growth at full load: 5–7 GB an hour. It went from 64 to 81 GB over three hours one morning, and from about 17 to 35 GB in a day earlier on.
  • It filled a 512 GB disk. Deleting threads freed nothing (#17845), and VACUUM has nothing to reclaim, so the only fix was moving to a bigger drive.

Retention like this would have kept this install manageable.
