The Usage page showed "N malformed or inconsistent usage record(s) were skipped" banners for Codex. Two normal Codex events caused them, and one of them also dropped real cost.

  • Compaction marker. After a context compaction, Codex writes a token_count with zero input and output, and a total equal to the new context size. The parser treated it as a bad request. Now any zero-input, zero-output count is a context-size marker, not a request.
  • Resumed session. A session resumed later in a new Codex process starts its cumulative counters again from zero. The first request then has total_token_usage == last_token_usage, which failed the delta check. That request was dropped and its cost was missing. Now that exact match counts as a restart, and the request is billed.

The usage scan cache moves to v8, so Codex files that were already cached are parsed again and lose their old malformed counts.

I checked it against real transcripts from 3 machines. The 4 skipped records go to 0, and the 3 resumed-session requests are now billed. None of those files replays an old first request, so this does not add the extra replay state from #22392.

Fixes #22376. Covers the counter reset from #22392 and #22491, plus the compaction marker.

📝 Walkthrough

Codex usage parsing now ignores zero-component usage records and recognizes cumulative-counter restarts. The usage scan cache advances to version 8 and re-parses older Codex entries. Tests cover parsing behavior and cache compatibility.

Changes: Codex usage scanning

Layer / File(s)Summary
Codex usage record parsing
apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/codexUsage.ts, apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/codexUsage.test.ts
Zero-component usage records are ignored. Cumulative validation accepts a restart when cumulative counters equal the current request counters. Tests cover post-compaction markers and resumed sessions.
Usage scan cache compatibility
apps/server/src/usage/usageScanCache.ts, apps/server/src/usage/usageScanCache.test.ts, apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.test.ts
The cache format advances to version 8, with version 7 retained as a legacy filename. Codex entries from versions below 8 are treated as incompatible. Tests cover cache versions 5 through 7 and the version 8 filename.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, and verification results. It does not use the template headings explicitly, but it is mostly complete and provides concrete observed outcomes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The parser changes, parser tests, cache version bump, cache migration handling, and cache compatibility tests support the stated Codex usage fixes. The compaction-marker handling is explicit current PR intent. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements the reset fixture behavior from [#22376]. It accepts the first reset request, validates the following delta, suppresses stale equal cumulative snapshots, and adds parser tests. However, restarted in apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/codexUsage.ts is true whenever all cumulative fields equal last_token_usage. The code does not require evidence that the cumulative sequence reset. For example, after a previous cumulative value of 100 input and 20 output, a request with 200 input and 40 output in both snapshots is accepted even though its cumulative delta is not the request usage. This does not preserve rejection of genuinely inconsistent counters.

Resolution

Require exact-match restart handling to include reset evidence, such as a cumulative counter decrease from the previous snapshot. Keep exact-match stale suppression and normal delta validation. Add a regression test that rejects an exact match without a counter reset and still accepts the synthetic #22376 reset fixture.

Do not treat every matching snapshot as a counter restart.

After a request with cumulative counters (100, 20) and another with (130, 25), a re-emission of the first request has cumulative === last. This condition bills the old request again and resets lastCumulativeUsage to (100, 20). The next valid delta can then be rejected as malformed. Require independent restart evidence or suppress an identified older snapshot before accepting this equality. The PR objective calls for preserving stale-event suppression.

Declining. The scenario is valid in theory, but I could not find it in real transcripts, and guarding it needs new parser state.

  • I checked 203 real Codex rollouts from 3 machines. The restart rule matched 3 times, and each was a session resumed days later in a new process. There were 0 replays of an older snapshot.
  • The baseline moving back is not new. state.lastCumulativeUsage = cumulative runs before validation (codexUsage.ts:216), so before this PR any rejected older snapshot already reset it.
  • Guarding the replay needs a stored sequence-start snapshot in CodexScanState (the approach in #22392). If Codex starts to replay older snapshots, we can add that then.

@t3dotgg Thanks for the clarification. You are right that baseline regression predates this PR: lastCumulativeUsage is updated before request validation.

The new rule can still bill an older replay, but your transcript checks found no such events. I accept your decision to defer replay protection until there is evidence that Codex emits these snapshots. No additional change requested.

5Learning: In apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/codexUsage.ts, lastCumulativeUsage is updated before request validation, so baseline regression on rejected snapshots predates the counter-restart handling. The maintainer accepts cumulative === last as restart detection and defers additional replay-tracking state in CodexScanState until real Codex transcripts demonstrate older-snapshot replays.
