Problem

The inline right panel remembers its width per thread (#11310). If you keep it at one size, for example half the window for diffs, you have to drag it again in every thread.

Change

Add an opt-in setting, Settings → Appearance → Interface → Shared panel width. When it is on, ChatView passes no per-thread key to the resize hook, so the hook uses its app-wide key (t3code:preview-panel-width) and a resize in one thread applies to every thread. It is off by default. Per-thread widths stay stored and come back when the setting is turned off. The row has the usual reset button, appears in the changed-settings list and in settings search.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option for an established capability. The right panel already persists its width; the option only chooses whether that width is per thread (current behavior and the default) or shared. It changes no default and adds no workflow.

Requested in the Ideas discussion #16825 (option 1) and in #22037, which was closed as a duplicate of #16825. #13298 made the width shared for everyone, which would undo the per-thread behavior requested in #5548; this keeps per-thread widths as the default.

Verification

  • vp test run src/components/settings/settingsSearch.test.ts in apps/web: 66 passed, including a new case that "panel width" finds the setting.
  • vp test run src/settings.test.ts in packages/contracts: 170 passed.
  • Typecheck for packages/contracts and apps/web, plus lint and format on the changed files: clean.
  • Manual check on an isolated dev server (web, 1280×800) with a copy of real threads, dragging the panel divider:
    • Before, on main: thread A resized from 540 to 664 px; thread B stayed at 540; back in A it was 664.
    • After, setting on: thread A resized from 540 to 414 px; thread B showed 414; back in A it was 414.
    • After, setting turned off again: each thread returned to its own width (664 and 540).
  • Not checked: the desktop shell separately (it renders the same web UI) and mobile, which has no resizable right panel.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds an off-by-default setting that changes the existing panel-width persistence path from per-thread to app-wide when enabled. The change is small and backward-compatible, but the runtime toggle and shared-width behavior lack direct automated coverage, so human review is appropriate.

Walkthrough

A new Appearance setting controls whether the right-panel width uses app-wide storage or storage scoped to the active thread. The setting is included in the client settings contract and can be reset. The resize hook reads and persists the selected width, including a fallback when storage writes fail.

Changes: Shared panel width

Layer / File(s)Summary
Define and expose shared panel width
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/AppearanceSettingsPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts
The client settings schema adds a default-false sharedPanelWidth field, and the patch accepts updates to it. Appearance settings add a switch and reset control. Restore tracking, default restoration, and settings search include the setting.
Read and persist resize width
apps/web/src/hooks/useResizableWidth.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useLocalStorage.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useResizableWidth.browser.test.tsx
useResizableWidth reads the width through useLocalStorage and uses the result of writeLocalStorageValue to track unsaved widths when writes fail. Browser tests cover storage-event updates and consecutive drags after a storage write failure.
Select preview-panel width storage
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatRightPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx
ChatRightPanel accepts an undefined widthStorageKey. ChatView passes the app-wide key when shared panel width is enabled; otherwise, it passes the active-thread-specific key.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly shared state is limited to panel width across threads using the same client storage context. The traced flow does not extend that sharing to server-side thread data or another client's settings.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new field is boolean-validated and follows the existing client-settings persistence path. Browser storage and desktop client-settings persistence remain distinct from environment-targeted server settings writes; the change does not add a new privileged operation.

Synchronize mounted panels that share the width.

If two browser tabs have this setting enabled and their panels open, resizing one panel leaves the other at its old width. useResizableWidth reads storage only on mount or when the key changes; it does not subscribe to updates to the same key. Subscribe mounted panels to shared-width changes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Addressed in commit 535128e

Fixed in 535128e13. useResizableWidth now reads the width through useLocalStorage, which follows changes to the key in this tab and in others, so panels that share a width follow a resize from another tab or window. useResizableWidth.browser.test.tsx covers it: it fails on the old hook and passes now.

@levochkaa Thanks for fixing this in 535128e13 and adding the regression test. The reported change addresses the shared-width synchronization finding.

Keep the committed width when storage writes fail.

If local storage is blocked or full, writeLocalStorageValue catches the error without notifying subscribers. The next drag then starts from the old width and the panel jumps. Preserve the committed width in memory when persistence fails, and add a test for this case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @levochkaa

Fixed in af7796913. useResizableWidth now keeps the width in memory when writeLocalStorageValue reports a failed write, and stops using it after the next successful write or once the stored width changes, so the next drag starts from the committed width. useResizableWidth.browser.test.tsx runs two drags against a failing setItem: it fails without the fix and passes now. I also checked it in the real client with setItem throwing: 761 → 601 → 501 px, no jump.

@levochkaa The supplied code addresses this finding: failed writes retain the committed width in memory, so the next drag starts from that width. A successful write or a changed stored width stops the fallback from being used. Thanks for adding the two-drag regression test and checking the real client.
