Important

Stacked PR 2 of 4. Review and merge in this order:

 1. #22237: Thread links in chat render as chips
 2. #22243: Thread chips show the thread's project icon ← this PR
 3. #22481: Projects without a favicon show a monogram, like desktop
 4. #22585: Chat and composer chips stay readable in light mode

Every PR in the stack targets main because the branches live on a fork, so this diff also includes #22237. To review only this PR's changes, use this comparison.

When a PR earlier in the stack merges, I rebase the ones after it onto main.

Why

On desktop, a thread link shows the thread's project favicon and falls back to a chat glyph (MarkdownThreadLink.tsx). On mobile every thread chip showed the same MessagesSquare glyph, so you couldn't tell which project a linked thread belonged to.

Implementation

Thread chips in mobile chat now show the thread's project icon, the way mobile shows project icons elsewhere. That covers thread context records in user messages and the thread-link chips from #22237. Each chip picks, in order:

Thread's projectChip icon
Thread unknown on this device, or the no-project (scratch) folderTinted MessagesSquare chat bubble, as before (desktop and #21546 also use a chat bubble for no-project threads)
Custom emoji iconThe emoji
Custom monogram iconThat monogram in its color
Custom Lucide iconA monogram of the project title in the icon's color (mobile has no Lucide set, same as the sidebar)
No custom icon, has a faviconThe favicon in its own colors
No custom icon, no faviconA monogram of the project title, colored by the same name hash web uses (projectIdentity.ts)
 • Favicons come from mobile's existing project favicon pipeline (projectFaviconUrlAtom), the same one ProjectFavicon uses in thread lists. That gives a cached thumbnail from the on-device favicon cache when there is one, and otherwise the server's signed asset URL. The token is in the URL, so the pill loads it the same way over a local, Tailscale or T3 Connect connection, with no extra headers. Each project resolves once and is shared by every chip and list row that shows it.
 • The native pill only accepts a raster image, so monogram and emoji tiles are drawn once per distinct glyph by a hidden react-native-svg view mounted at the app root and exported with toDataURL as a PNG data: URI. Monograms use the sidebar tile's look: rounded tile, 15% tint background, -500 text. The result is cached in an atom keyed by the glyph and color, so every chip with that glyph shares one image. Nothing is redrawn per chip or per render, and nothing is fetched. The colors don't depend on the theme, so one image serves dark and light.
 • Icons keep their own colors (no tint); the label keeps the thread accent. Linked threads are resolved across environments the same way tapping them already does.

Evidence

One fixture thread with a project in each state: favicon-app (favicon), Auto Monogram (no icon, no favicon), custom-mono (custom monogram "Q7", violet), emoji-proj (πŸš€), lucide-proj (Lucide rocket, emerald), the no-project folder, and a link to a thread that doesn't exist. Each appears as a thread context record in the user message and as a t3-thread:// link in the assistant reply.

Before (dark and light, iOS then Android): every thread chip shows the teal MessagesSquare glyph.

Before: every thread chip shows the teal MessagesSquare glyph

After, close-up of the context-record chips. From the top: favicon, auto monogram "AM", custom monogram "Q7", emoji πŸš€, Lucide as monogram "LP", no project (chat bubble), unknown thread (chat bubble).

After: context-record chips show favicon, AM, Q7, rocket emoji, LP, then chat bubbles for no project and unknown, on iOS and Android in dark and light

After, iOS 27 simulator: context records in the user message and thread links in the assistant reply, dark and light.

After on iOS: both chip forms show the same icon per state in dark and light

After, Android 16 emulator, same layout.

After on Android: both chip forms show the same icon per state in dark and light

Limitations

 • Projects with no favicon look different from the mobile sidebar. Their chips show a title monogram, as desktop does, while mobile thread lists still show a folder for those projects.
 • Monogram font differs slightly from the sidebar. The tile is drawn by react-native-svg, which doesn't pick up the app's font-mono. iOS draws the letters in the system sans-serif, and Android draws them in regular-weight monospace instead of bold.
 • A favicon that hasn't loaded yet shows the monogram first. The chip switches to the favicon once it loads, which happens only the first time that project's favicon is fetched on the device. The thread list shows a folder in that gap.
 • Emoji is drawn by the platform's emoji font, a little smaller than a full tile, just like the sidebar's emoji icon.
 • Some icons only appear on a full app reload. If a tile capture ever fails, that glyph's chips keep the chat bubble until the app reloads. This never happened in testing.
 • The no-project chat bubble depends on server config. It only applies when the server reports a scratch folder (scratchWorkspaceRoot). Before the server config arrives, a no-project thread briefly shows the folder's monogram.
 • No relay or tunnel testing. Tested only against a local dev server; T3 Connect isn't tested. Monogram and emoji tiles are drawn on the device and need no network.

Validation

 • vp test run for apps/mobile/src/lib/projectIcon.test.ts (which icon a chip gets in each state), enrichedLinkPresentation.test.ts, and the React Compiler coverage test. tsc --noEmit for apps/mobile, and lint on the changed files.
 • iOS 27 simulator and Android 16 emulator, dark and light, against an isolated dev server. The JS ran on the installed native clients' base commit with this branch's mobile changes applied.

The mobile thread feed now renders enriched thread and GitHub pull-request links with chip labels, states, and project icons. New helpers derive pull-request states and thread targets, resolve project icons, and rasterize glyphs for native display.

Changes: Mobile enriched links

Layer / File(s)Summary
Define thread and pull-request chip presentations
apps/mobile/src/lib/enrichedLinkPresentation.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/useEnrichedLinkVariants.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/enrichedLinkPresentation.test.ts
Helpers derive pull-request states, chat-link presentations, and thread targets. Shared customization logic applies presentation properties and optional icons. Tests cover state selection, presentations, and target resolution.
Resolve and rasterize project chip icons
apps/mobile/src/lib/projectIcon.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/projectIcon.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/ProjectChipIconImages.tsx, apps/mobile/src/App.tsx
The project icon resolver selects configured glyphs, eligible favicons, or generated monograms. The rasterizer creates glyph image data, and App mounts the rasterizer.
Connect chip state and icons to ThreadFeed
apps/mobile/src/state/entities.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
State hooks expose pull-request states and resolve icons for thread targets. ThreadFeed passes pull-request states and matching thread icons to markdown link customizations and list appearance data.

Merge Risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to fb433

Some project icons may remain as fallback chat icons; this is localized and recoverable through an app reload.

Security architecture risk: πŸ”΅ Low Β· up to fb433

The new icons use existing project and asset access paths; no expanded authorization or externally callable interface was identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns application-lifetime cache growth and recovery from interrupted native captures, rather than a demonstrated security vulnerability.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

 • inferred β€” The identified new resource exposure is within the mobile application process: distinct project glyphs can accumulate shared capture results across rendered threads. Markdown links select existing project records rather than supplying arbitrary capture keys. No practical aggregate bound or attack-driven exhaustion was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

 • observed β€” New icon lookup uses the same linked-thread resolver already used for navigation. It prefers the source environment, accepts a unique cross-environment match, and rejects ambiguous matches. Favicon lookup then receives the resolved environment identity. The resolver and navigation behavior predate this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

 • inferred β€” Capture failures are contained at the consumer as absent replacement icons rather than failed thread access. Global pending work can be observed after rasterizer remount, but cached failures do not recover automatically. These behaviors do not establish an authorization or data-disclosure failure.

Hardening Proposals

 • proposed β€” Consider a bounded glyph-cache lifetime and explicit timeout/retry policy to limit application-wide resource accumulation and recover from transient native capture failures. This is lifecycle hardening, not a verified security finding.

Recreated linkHandlers object defeats memo on each render.

AssistantMarkdownContent is wrapped in memo. It now builds a new linkHandlers object and a new linkCustomization closure on every render. SelectableMarkdownText receives new props each time. useEnrichedLinkVariants lists linkCustomization as a useMemo dependency. The link map is therefore recomputed on every render of this component. This is a performance cost on streaming messages. Wrap the object in useMemo.

Re the CodeRabbit nitpick on ThreadFeed.tsx 824–829 (memoize linkHandlers in AssistantMarkdownContent): not applying it. Mobile is compiled by the React Compiler, and ThreadFeed.tsx is not in KNOWN_BAILOUTS. reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts passes on this branch, so the compiler already caches this object on props.linkHandlers and threadIcons. The repo is migrating away from hand-written useMemo in mobile, so adding one here would go against that.

Settle rasterization when toDataURL does not call back.

A glyph request adds a tile to pendingTiles and returns a promise. finish removes the tile only from the toDataURL callback. If the native capture throws or never invokes that callback, the hidden GlyphCapture remains mounted and Effect.tryPromise(() => rasterize(key)) never settles. Add a bounded failure path and ignore a late callback.

Re the CodeRabbit outside-diff finding on ProjectChipIconImages.tsx (settle rasterization when toDataURL does not call back): applied in part, in fb43334d9f.

 • Synchronous throw (applied): the capture now runs through a module-level captureTile that catches it and rejects the tile. An uncaught error in a frame callback can be fatal in release builds. It sits outside the component because the React Compiler skips components with a try/catch in a closure.
 • Timeout (not applied): when the native callback never fires, the only effect is that the tile stays pending offscreen and its chips keep the chat-bubble fallback. The PR body lists that as a limitation, and it never happened in testing on iOS or Android. A timer per tile would be machinery against an unobserved failure.

Settle captures when the native callback does not run.

If toDataURL never invokes its callback, this try block cannot call finish. The tile remains pending, and started.current prevents another capture. Affected chips keep the fallback icon until an app reload. Add a bounded timeout that settles the tile, and ignore a callback that arrives after the timeout. The Android native implementation can defer capture while its SVG view is unavailable or unrendered. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Not adding the timeout, for the reasons in https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/pull/22243#issuecomment-6301406286.

The Android source you linked doesn't drop a capture. When the view isn't available or notRendered(), SvgViewModule.toDataURL queues a setToDataUrlTask and retries once the view renders. GlyphCapture stays mounted until its tile settles, so the deferred capture still calls back, just later. A timeout would turn a slow capture into a permanent fallback.

On the iOS simulator and Android emulator every tile captured on the first try, including in this offscreen, opacity-0 view. If the callback ever truly never fires, the chips keep the chat bubble, which the PR body already lists under Limitations.

@flamboh Thanks for the clarification. I withdraw the timeout recommendation.

I treated deferred capture as evidence of a dropped callback. That inference was not justified. Keeping GlyphCapture mounted allows the deferred capture to complete. A timeout could instead cache a failure for a slow capture.

The documented chat-bubble fallback is an accepted limitation here. No change is needed for this finding.

5Learning: In apps/mobile/src/native/ProjectChipIconImages.tsx, GlyphCapture stays mounted while its tile is pending. Android react-native-svg defers toDataURL capture when the SVG view is unavailable or not yet rendered; this deferral alone is not evidence of a dropped callback. A timeout that rejects the cached tile promise can turn a slow capture into a permanent fallback, so do not recommend such a timeout solely because capture can be deferred.
