Problem

On macOS and Linux, Settings checks which t3 a new terminal would run before it installs the command. That check (added in #17351) takes the first PATH entry where anything named t3 exists. Shells skip a directory or a file the current user can't execute and keep searching. So such an entry earlier on PATH is reported as "Another t3 ... runs first", and Install refuses, even though the shell would run the real command further down. The same lookup sets onPath, so an installed link behind such an entry reads as not on PATH.

Repro: put a directory named t3 in a PATH directory that comes before ~/.local/bin, then open Settings and install the t3 command.

Change

firstOnPath in apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliCommand.ts now accepts a candidate only if fs.stat reports a regular file and access(X_OK) succeeds for the current process. Both calls follow symlinks, so our launcher link and a foreign t3 that links to an executable are still found, and the foreign-command check works as before. Effect's FileSystem.access has no execute option. The file imports node:fs and node:fs/promises under a file-level @effect-diagnostics nodeBuiltinImport:off with a stated reason, as DesktopAppActivation.ts does.

Scope and approval

There is no issue for this. It fits the small focused fix exception: one bug in the shadow check from #17351, 15 changed lines in one file, and one test. There is no contract change. The Settings row and the install result do change in one case: a directory or a file you can't execute is no longer named as the t3 that runs first, so Install succeeds and the row shows the command as installed. On Windows the shadow check is skipped and state ignores the result of firstOnPath.

Prior PRs: none. A search of open and closed PRs found only #16683 and #17351, which added this code.

Verification

New test in apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts, "skips a t3 directory or a file this user cannot execute". PATH lists a directory named t3, then a t3 with mode 0601 (only other users may execute it), then an executable t3, then ~/.local/bin. It checks that shadowedBy is the executable. It then removes the executable and checks that install succeeds with onPath: true, with the other two entries still ahead of ~/.local/bin.

Commands ran from apps/desktop on Linux x64, Node 24.22.0, as a non-root user.

sh
1vp test run src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts -t "skips a t3 directory or a file this user cannot execute"
  • Main's source (54983e3f45) with the new test: 1 failed. Expected $TMPDIR/shadow/t3, received $TMPDIR/folder/t3.
  • This branch: 1 passed.
  • A check on mode bits alone (any execute bit set) fails the same test with plain/t3, the mode-0601 file.

The new test on main fails, and passes on this branch:

New test failing on main and passing on this branch

Packaged app. I built unsigned packages of main and this branch (Linux x64 AppImage under Xvfb, macOS arm64 DMG) and used Settings > General > "t3 command" through the UI. Each run used a throwaway HOME and this PATH: a directory t3, a mode-644 t3, a symlink to it, a mode-0601 t3, then ~/.local/bin and the system folders. On macOS the app ran with --use-mock-keychain and with SHELL pointing at a script that runs zsh -f, so the login-shell PATH matched the test PATH. With the same PATH, bash type -P t3 (both platforms) and zsh command -v t3 (macOS) found nothing before Install and ~/.local/bin/t3 after it. They only look the name up, so nothing ran.

Main names the directory and refuses Install:

Linux, main: the directory named t3 is reported as the t3 that runs first, and Install fails

macOS, main: the same directory is reported, and Install fails

This branch installs the link, and the row shows it as on PATH. Remove then deletes it:

Linux, this branch: Install links t3 into ~/.local/bin and the row says to open a new terminal

macOS, this branch: Install links t3 into ~/.local/bin and the row says to open a new terminal

A real executable t3 later on PATH (mode 755) still blocks Install. This branch names that file, which is also what both shells resolve:

Linux, this branch: an executable t3 later on PATH is named, and Install fails

macOS, this branch: an executable t3 later on PATH is named, and Install fails

Focused checks:

sh
1vp test run src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts src/app/DesktopCliShim.test.ts
2vp lint src/app/DesktopCliCommand.ts src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts
3vp fmt --check src/app/DesktopCliCommand.ts src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts
4pnpm run typecheck

Tests: 2 files, 16 passed. Lint and format: clean. Typecheck: exit 0, with Effect language-service suggestions only for other files.

Not checked:

  • Windows, where this lookup's result is not used.
  • x64 macOS, arm64 Linux, a signed macOS build, and a Wayland session (Linux ran under Xvfb only).
  • Running as root. For root, access(X_OK) passes when any execute bit is set, which matches what the shell does, but I didn't run it.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This focused desktop fix changes Unix CLI shadow detection to recognize only regular files executable by the current user and adds coverage for the behavior. Human review is required because the production file also adds a file-level directive suppressing a static-analysis diagnostic.

Walkthrough

PATH lookup now skips candidates that are not regular files with execute access. A test covers a directory and a non-executable file before an executable t3 command. It also checks installation after removing that executable.

firstOnPath now checks that a candidate is a regular file with execute access. The test checks that a directory and non-executable file are skipped, then verifies installation after removing the executable entry.

apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliCommand.test.ts:197-227 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Skip this POSIX permission test on Windows.

apps/desktop/package.json runs the desktop tests with vp test run --passWithNoTests. On Windows, process.getuid?.() === 0 does not skip this test, and NodeFS.constants.X_OK does not enforce POSIX execute permissions. The plain/t3 fixture can therefore pass NodeFSP.access(..., X_OK), causing the shadowedBy assertion to fail and the desktop test command to fail.

updated the original branch at 76724975bed7a7447fa79a9c6edf0558387975c0, retaining all four @only21mil commits and merging current main (04a21bb1c1ce).

kept the original regular-file plus current-user execute-access check. reduced it to one node import and narrowed the diagnostic suppression from the whole file to that import. the existing regression now runs as root with mode 0600, retains 0601 for non-root users, skips windows, and explicitly checks that a real executable still blocks installation. no new test files or unrelated changes. the old root-test review thread is addressed and resolved.

verification:

  • reproduced the regression against current main through blacksmith before restoring the fix.
  • 11 focused command/shim tests passed through blacksmith.
  • vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith: format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and the nearby tests.
  • github ci completed successfully; github reports CLEAN / MERGEABLE.
  • two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews approved this exact head with no findings.
  • reran the real service locally with matching filesystem data: main falsely blocks on a directory; this head installs a real symlink with onPath: true, then removes it while preserving the unrelated entries. runtime transcript.

unverified: packaged electron ipc, macos/windows runtime, and new before/after ui captures. the default web dev server cannot expose this desktop-only control without electron's full bridge; a partial bridge fails startup, so no simulated screenshots are supplied. the contributor's existing packaged-app captures remain in the description. coderabbit's new review was rate limited; its earlier findings are addressed. human approval remains outstanding; no approval gate was bypassed.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at 76724975bed7a7447fa79a9c6edf0558387975c0 on this linux x64 vm. no source changes or pushes.

  • reproduced on freshly fetched github/main (49a9e80e0b) in a separate worktree: clicking install reports the directory named t3 as a shadow and fails, although bash finds no executable command.
  • built and ran unsigned desktop packages from both revisions. with identical path entries (directory, owner-non-executable mode 0601 file, and symlink to that file), the pr installs a real launcher symlink. settings reports it on path, and a new shell runs t3 --version successfully.
  • remove and reinstall work without changing those unrelated entries. a symlink to a real executable still blocks install and names the same path bash resolves.
  • started each revision's real dev server in the background, one at a time. on the pr, used chrome/playwright to add a real git project, select codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submit a git-status request through the composer. the tool call and reply rendered.
  • used the newly installed t3 launcher to add a project and run t3 thread start --provider codex --model gpt-6.1-sol --wait. the real provider completed, and the desktop client displayed its completed reply and model.
  • blacksmith: 11 focused command/shim tests passed. vp run check:changed 04a21bb1c1cec0e60aa831bef11e67feae95885e passed format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and nearby tests. latest ci has no failing or pending checks.

main, before:

main falsely reports a directory as the t3 executable

pr, after:

pr installs t3 behind the same invalid path entries

real desktop remove and reinstall interaction

completed real codex turn started through the installed t3 launcher

command and ipc transcript. captures inspected; uploaded video playback and seeking checked.

Not verified

native macos/windows, ios/android, signed installers, wayland, arm64, and root execute semantics were not exercised on this linux x64 vm. web/mobile do not expose this desktop-only installer.

the first pr package build stalled rendering web chunks and timed out; the bounded-concurrency retry built successfully. desktop startup initially encountered a keyring prompt; verification used --password-store=basic, with no password entered. the blacksmith snapshot needed the pr's git history fetched before check:changed could find its merge base.
