device_close removes the Device panel entry but leaves the thread's agent-device claim live, preventing another thread from using the device.

Release the caller's deterministic agent-device session before removing its panel record. Treat SESSION_NOT_FOUND as already released, retain the record on other failures or an unavailable SSH endpoint, and allow shutdown to be retried after release. Keep the device booted unless shutdown is requested. Main already targets the serial an AVD gets after boot (#21844); this PR adds a toolkit test that pins it.

Each device host sends the release itself (DeviceHostReady.releaseAgentSession). The local and SSH hosts send it only while their shared daemon runs. EAS hosts run one daemon per device, so they send it to the running session's own agent endpoint, and treat a session that has already ended as released. Close never starts a daemon, a device or a cloud session.

Related to #17470. Settle, archive, delete, idle expiry, and claim-state display are outside this change.

Prior PRs: #18726 by Omar Shaarawi (@omarshaarawi) released agent-device sessions before removing their device_close records, as part of broader thread and device cleanup; closed without merging. This PR keeps the release-before-removal fix focused on device_close, with failures retaining the panel record for retry.

Validation after the refresh onto main: 115 unit tests in the six touched test files and 252 across the device suites, including an EAS close test (release, a second thread's claim kept, failed release keeps the record, retry without shutdown), plus the apps/server TypeScript check, targeted lint and formatting.

Original validation, before the refresh: real iOS and Android checks confirmed conflict before close, claim by B after close, and successful panel-only close with a running daemon. The Android harness used the handler order at the time, from a cold vv-api36 AVD. These service harnesses use real device/tool endpoints. The web Device panel was driven against the repaired source server for a real release timeout, retained error state, and successful power-off retry. These device and UI checks were not rerun after the refresh, and the EAS release has no live-session run.

Active panel before power-off:

Active Device panel

Release failure retains the panel and shows the error:

Device close error

After daemon recovery, retry closes the panel and powers off the emulator:

Successful power-off retry

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This focused fix changes device_close from local state removal into an authenticated remote cleanup workflow with retries, failure retention, SSH handling, lifecycle locking, and Android serial retargeting. The cross-file runtime behavior and remote side effects are substantial enough to require human review.

Ready device hosts can release agent-session claims through their running agent daemons. Device close now releases claims and completes requested shutdown before removing session records. Post-shutdown discovery failures are logged.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 17470 reports that device close removes the Device panel entry without closing the agent-device session. This PR releases the caller’s agent session during close, but does not cover settle, archive, or idle expiry.

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: External image Low · previous review a0479

The new close behavior has a test gap around concurrent reopening. Two existing lifecycle gaps also remain: a local-host reset can skip claim release, and shutdown can discard another thread’s record without releasing its claim. Address these before relying on close to clean up every claim.

Security architecture risk: External image Low · up to 22c81

Cleanup now retains retry state and targets the requesting thread’s device session. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Some uncertainty remains around remote authentication enforcement and cleanup after interrupted requests or device shutdown.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new release operation selects records belonging to the invoking thread, optionally narrowed by host and device. Its network destination and bearer credential come from the resolved host rather than close-request input. Requested shutdown retains the existing device-wide effect.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public MCP close handler obtains thread identity from invocation scope. Its actsAsCaller wrapper requires a thread caller, rejects read-only clients, and checks caller liveness before invoking the handler.
  • observed — The release client attaches the selected daemon’s bearer token. This proves client-side credential use, not daemon-side authentication or authorization enforcement; the supplied proof gap remains unresolved because the daemon implementation is external to the inspected repository.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Close holds the same lifecycle lock used to publish reopened sessions, preventing reopen publication during an in-progress server-side close. Records survive release or shutdown failure, allowing repeated cleanup to accept an already-missing daemon session. This does not establish how the external daemon handles a request that completes after client interruption or timeout.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the external daemon contract for authenticated close, late completion after timeout, and cleanup of sibling claims during shutdown. These checks would close the remaining ownership and enforcement proof gaps; they are not verified vulnerabilities.

🟡 Minor · Keep agentDevice when ensureHubReady replaces a dead hub. · LocalDeviceHost.ts:671-678

apps/server/src/device/LocalDeviceHost.ts:671-678 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep agentDevice when ensureHubReady replaces a dead hub.

toReady now copies running.agentDevice into current (Line 788). DeviceService.close uses that field to decide whether to send the agent-session release. The agent daemon does not depend on the hub process.

Assume the hub exits and superviseHub is still waiting out its restart delay. If any readiness call runs during that window, ensureHubReady clears runningRef (Line 630) and builds a new RunningHost with agentDevice: null. The daemon is still running and still holds the agent claims.

A later close then reads ready.agentDevice === null. It skips the RPC release and removes the panel record. The claim leaks until the daemon restarts. This is the conflict the PR is meant to fix.

superviseHub already keeps agentDevice through { ...current, hub: replacement }. ensureHubReady should keep it too.

Make the reopen assertion observe the published session.

The current opening.pollUnsafe() check is scheduler-dependent, and the final session count is 1 whether open is blocked or replaces the old session. The MCP caller only delegates to DeviceService.close, so its mocked tests do not cover this ordering.

After the reopen has had time to run, compare the published session by identity. sessionsForThread reads state without taking lifecycleLock, and open replaces the old matching session with a new object when it publishes.

thanks @only21mil. the release-before-removal ordering, retryable records, and per-device eas endpoints are preserved, along with your commits. i merged current main (8e1bb0376ce8) into this branch without rebasing or force-pushing.

i simplified shutdown so callers own session removal and discovery, removing the readyOverride flag's extra meanings. i dropped the redundant mcp android-targeting test because main already implements that fix; the service test still verifies release targets the post-boot serial. i also updated response validation for main's new effect typecheck rule. the takeover removes 68 net lines.

verification:

  • reproduced main's bug with the focused regression: expected the release rpc, received none.
  • vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith-testbox: formatting, lint, both knip passes, graphql generation, server/scripts typechecks, and 78 tests across seven existing files.
  • the final helper accepted SESSION_NOT_FOUND over authenticated http from a real agent-device 0.21.31 daemon.
  • all 27 ci checks passed on 12879b09adf2eba02fe6feab47f422e463d903f6.
  • two independent read-only reviews approved the simplified cleanup. the subsequent effect validation syntax change also passed the checks above.

unverified: live ios/android claim handoff, ssh/eas sessions, and device-panel retry screenshots. this vm has no simulator or connected device; the original screenshots were not recaptured. no client code changed.

the existing bot findings are covered: local endpoints survive hub restart failure; close preserves peer records; ssh reconnect/start handles claims without starting a daemon during close; reopen ordering uses queue/deferred and publication assertions.

@only21mil, a daemon that dies while its local hub survives can still leave a cached endpoint. that existing daemon-recovery issue is separate from claim release and has focused work in #23441; it is not expanded here. maintainer approval of the remote cleanup behavior is still needed.

verified head 12879b09adf2eba02fe6feab47f422e463d903f6 on the t3 android 35 x86_64 emulator with kvm. ran vp i, a real isolated dev server (13773), metro (8081), and the shared-cache native dev client. paired the native app and created a real project and two threads. both ran real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. no mocks or demo data.

  • a acquired session t3-0ea41a91aa7f6ada15421ae7 by opening the app through the returned agent-device command.
  • b attempted the same app with its own session t3-8cc47649d17786c1fc77cd6d and received DEVICE_IN_USE naming a. the conflict is visible in the native client.
  • a invoked the real mcp device_close with shutdown:false. it succeeded, removed only a's panel record, and left android booted (sys.boot_completed=1). no manual agent-device close was used for this handoff.
  • b retried with its original session, without force, stealing, changing session, or restarting anything. app open and snapshot -i both succeeded. the native client shows the result.
  • repeated close of a succeeded and preserved b's record. b then invoked mcp device_close(shutdown:true) with its active claim: success, no panel records left, emulator stopped.

76 focused tests across the six changed device test files passed through blacksmith-check. all 27 ci checks remain successful on the unchanged head. no source changes or pushes were needed.

before close, b cannot claim the device:

android native client shows b blocked by a's device claim

after a's server close, b opens and snapshots with its own session:

android native client shows successful claim handoff after device_close

ios requires macos/xcode and cannot run here. ssh/eas hosts, unavailable-host retry, release-failure retention, hub-restart recovery, concurrent close/reopen, and desktop/web client controls were not exercised live. this pass did not reproduce the original leak on github/main; the before capture shows the expected active-owner conflict on the pr head. an initial android snapshot-helper parse failure was transient; b's later snapshot succeeded. uploaded images loaded at full resolution and the 58-second video played to completion and sought successfully in t3 preview. git.cafe renders these external media embeds as links, so inline media rendering there is unverified.

no merge, close, rebase, force-push, labels, or other prs touched. verification processes are stopped after capture.

merged main 812c0a71c785 into the existing contributor branch without rebasing. head is f62735c649d3153e2c9da998eaa39c6f824db286.

preserved retryable daemon release and main's launcher cleanup before power-off. shutdown releases peer claims before removing their records; a failed release or shutdown keeps the records for retry. preserved main's android eas routing and device-location tests. the existing cancellation test now waits through the state write lock rather than rediscovery, which would wait on the lifecycle lock held by close.

vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith: format, lint, both knip checks, graphql generation, affected typechecks, and 97 tests across eight existing files. two independent read-only reviews approved the final sha. no new test files or client changes. ci is running.

live android/ios/ssh/eas interactions were not rerun for this merge. the earlier android handoff evidence remains in this discussion; it covers the prior head, not this merge. no merge, close, rebase, force-push, or label changes performed.

final head f62735c649d3153e2c9da998eaa39c6f824db286 is mergeable with no conflicts. git.cafe reports 29 successful contexts, zero pending, zero failing; github confirms all executed checks passed (conditional preview/native checks and the paused review bot are skipped). no unresolved inline findings remain.

blacksmith check:changed passed, including 97 tests. both independent reviews approved this final head. no live device interactions were rerun after the merge; the prior android evidence remains above. ready for maria's review. no pr merge performed.
