Problem

A root turn can complete while native child continuation events remain queued. Consulting live adapter state then closes ingestion early and drops that continuation's output.

Change

Consume ordered pending-work snapshots from the OpenCode adapter and keep ingestion open until owned child work drains. Remove snapshots when a child transfers to another run, so stale state cannot retain the old subscription. Other adapters retain the existing thread-scoped probe.

Scope and approval

Fixes #19228

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Preserves the existing maintainer takeover of #19388, stacked on #21460. Main is merged into the preserved branches; no history was rewritten.

Verification

The test-only follow-up 1b052a2d9d adds retained-descendant drain coverage. The service file passes 49/49 tests (log); on the earlier test-fixture revision, clearing all descendant pending entries fails the pending-work case (mutation proof). Production files are identical to the previously verified publication head, so the runtime evidence below still applies. This coverage establishes retention and release; it does not assert exclusive ownership during session reuse.

Independent follow-up proof audit: SUFFICIENT; publication and tested trees match.

  • Baseline main 8d3b061121: both ownership variants drop all queued child events. Original red proof.
  • Wake-replay regression: a session holds a wake while top-level, becomes another session's child, and consumes the wake. Without ancestor refresh, its caller remains pending (expected true to be false); with the fix, both snapshots clear. Red | Green.
  • Final code passes 250 tests across the service, adapter, and OpenCode package suites, plus all 22 replay fixtures. The focused service/adapter/replay subset is 149 tests. Scoped log | Replay log. Server and OpenCode package typechecks and targeted lint pass.
  • Two fresh independent reviewers, GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5, returned MERGE for the ancestor correction. The earlier transfer cleanup remains covered, including independent pending siblings and subscription release after drain.
  • Real isolated web dev app on Linux fs-05, OpenCode 2.0.32, opencode/deepseek-v4.1-flash-free, subagent_depth=2, committed nested-background fixture prompt: root completes at 10:47:30.082, grandchild output persists at 10:47:59.653, middle continuation runs at 10:47:59.743 and completes at 10:48:02.173. Final thread snapshots are idle with empty pending tasks. Ordered final-code runtime.
  • Tested 587227c136 and published top 31b509cecc have identical trees, including dependency 4cc74410d2. Revision and scope manifest.
  • Baseline live runs also succeeded: runtime evidence establishes compatibility; deterministic tests establish the races. Live ownership-loss, restart, and the reused-root held-wake edge were not exercised. The latter is covered by the adapter regression. The direct takeRunningWake counterpart lacks its own test; both replay sites use the same correction. Service tests, rather than UI idle state, prove subscription release and exclude an after-drain sentinel.
  • Server-only change: visual fixture matrix is empty; no rendered UI changed.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval โ€” This focused server fix keeps ingestion alive for queued native child continuations and adds targeted regression coverage. The transfer cleanup may still retain nested descendant provider threads under the prior run, creating a possible stale-subscription and event-routing issue that needs human review.

๐Ÿ“ Walkthrough

RunExecutionServiceV2 records pending background work by provider thread and uses that state when deciding whether to continue ingestion after the root turn ends. It removes pending-work entries for detached child threads. Tests cover queued child output and transferred-child subscriptions.

Changes: Provider thread ingestion

Layer / File(s)Summary
Track pending work and govern ingestion
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RunExecutionService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RunExecutionService.test.ts
The service records pendingBackgroundWork from provider-thread updates. After root completion, it continues ingestion while non-root threads have pending work and uses the recorded root state to decide when to stop. Tests cover queued child output and provide configurable ingestion and pending-work query callbacks.
Clear pending state for detached children
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RunExecutionService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RunExecutionService.test.ts
When routing detaches a moved child, the service removes pending-work entries for threads no longer owned by the run. Tests cover sibling and descendant pending work when deciding whether the prior subscription remains open.

Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code), posting for Peyton (@not-compromised), who reported #19228.

I ran the live OpenCode check that both PR descriptions list as still missing. The stack worked in all 5 runs.

The earlier attempt got stuck on nesting. OpenCode only lets a subagent start its own subagent when the project's opencode.json has this:

json
1{ "experimental": { "subagent_depth": 2 } }

With that set, every run reached the grandchild. The middle thread's GRANDCHILD_OK follow-up arrived after the root had finished, and T3 showed the same messages OpenCode recorded.

One caveat: I couldn't get main to drop the output live either (0 of 7 runs). So this shows the fix works with a real provider, not a live before/after.

Setup
  • OpenCode 2.0.32 started by T3, isolated state, headless Linux.
  • Free models opencode/deepseek-v4.1-flash-free and opencode/mimo-v2.6-flash-free.
  • Prompt: OPENCODE2_NESTED_BACKGROUND_PROMPT, unchanged.
  • Tested 5c93a777fa merged with the current #21460 head 359f713fca (clean merge). RunExecutionService.test.ts and OpenCode2AdapterV2.test.ts pass on it.
  • main was 7c83530d17.
  • Not covered: root ownership lost, restart, other platforms.

  • test(server): preserve pending descendants after child transfer1b052a2

The retained grandchild remains routed by the old subscription, so its eventual pendingBackgroundWork: false snapshot replaces the cached true and permits release. Moving the direct child does not make that descendant entry uncleareable. Removing the entire subtree at that point would discard queued grandchild output before another subscription adopts it.

OpenCode can share descendant routing through later node updates or session reattachment; that behavior predates this change. It does not establish the claimed stale-entry leak. Kept the production routing unchanged and added a focused retention/release regression in 1b052a2d9d: pending work keeps the prior subscription open, and its clearing snapshot releases it. 49 passing service tests, earlier-fixture mutation failure.

2006-2083: ๐ŸŽฏ Functional Correctness | ๐Ÿ”ต Trivial | โšก Quick win

Assert grandchild output in the nested-transfer fixture.

The fixture transfers the child and checks only whether the prior subscription remains open. It does not emit or assert any grandchild output after the transfer. The separate queued-child-output test asserts output, but it does not exercise child transfer. Add a post-transfer grandchild message and capture it through onIngest; otherwise a regression that retains the subscription but drops grandchild output can pass.

The nested-transfer fixture intentionally tests subscription lifetime: pending descendant work retains ingestion, and its clearing snapshot releases it. Message delivery is covered by the existing queued-child-output regression. This follow-up changes no production routing or message handling; keeping the new fixture focused on the retention/release behavior rather than extending it with another output assertion. Both variants pass in the 49-test service suite.
