mobile audio attachments and standalone markdown audio embeds play inline, and video attachments use the existing player. documents become filename chips throughout thread and file markdown. remote images keep their image behavior, source links preserve file navigation and line targets, and workspace csv/tsv opens the table/source viewer. host office and unknown files retain main's source reader; direct document urls use the native viewer.

inline audio, the audio file viewer, shared video players, and ios fullscreen avkit share one audio-session owner. buffering and seeks keep ownership and native auto-resume. explicit pause, playback end, errors, unmount, and recording takeover release it. a small expo-video patch exposes native play/pause intent separately from playingChange, including ios waits that remain readyToPlay; expo-video builds from source so the patch ships. audio takeover and stale player cleanup pause without deactivating the shared ios session through a small expo-audio patch. ordinary release preserves main's global audio gate, recording blocks playback, and stale tokens cannot change the successor's mode.

starting inline audio or video from an attachment or standalone markdown embed aborts any pending transcript file lookup through one shared playback-start callback. the loaded video player also calls it on native playbackRequestedChange intent, covering resume from inline or fullscreen controls before buffering advances the clock. useEffectEvent keeps the callback current without resubscribing and pausing the player on feed renders. the callback fires only when native play intent changes from false to true; repeated true events during buffering, recovery, and seeks preserve file lookups started while video is playing. tracking resets when replacing the source or removing the player. the existing ThreadFeed regression covers all eight initial-play combinations, four user/assistant attachment/embed video resume cases, and four continued-playback cases. the four continued-playback cases reproduced lookup cancellation on 8914378828 and pass with this fix; pause, link tap, and native resume still cancel the lookup.

blacksmith passed mobile typecheck, all 91 existing-file playback and preview tests, scoped formatting, and release smoke. scoped lint reports 0 errors and 2 existing warnings. native playback and visual evidence remain unverified; no emulator was started for this pass, and ios is unavailable on this linux host. no new test files or dependencies; this fix changes only mobile code.

A CSV/TSV route with a line parameter now opens at the first rows instead of the requested line, and targets beyond the 100-row preview limit are inaccessible. Adding filePreviewDelimiter(...) selects the table preview without considering targetLine, which DelimitedFilePreview does not use; keep explicit line-targeted routes in source mode.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval โ€” This PR adds inline audio and shared-file viewing across mobile surfaces while changing native audio-session behavior and patched Expo dependencies. It also changes default file presentation and adds lint suppressions, making the scope and runtime impact unsuitable for automatic approval.

Walkthrough

Mobile thread and file screens now support audio, document, and delimited-file previews. Markdown media resolution recognizes audio, document, and file links. Delimited-file routes display parsed tables.

Changes: Mobile file previews

Layer / File(s)Summary
Preview classification and media resolution
apps/mobile/src/lib/filePreview.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/filePreview.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownMedia.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownMedia.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownDocument.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownHtml.test.ts
Preview classification identifies audio files. Markdown media resolution returns audio, PDF, document, or file previews and rejects unsupported links and data URIs. Markdown file embeds are converted to labeled links. Tests cover file types, paths, routing, authorization, and resolution cases.
Thread attachment and Markdown rendering
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/*, apps/mobile/src/features/files/FileMarkdownPreview.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/FilePreviewModal.tsx, apps/mobile/src/native/*, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AppSymbol.tsx
Thread attachments and Markdown file links route supported files to inline previews or file-opening actions. Audio previews provide playback controls and respond to app and media state. Video attachments use ThreadMarkdownVideo, which pauses when not visible. Native viewer errors can offer document sharing. The Android pause symbol maps to a pause icon.
Delimited-file table preview
apps/mobile/src/features/files/ThreadFilesRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/DelimitedFilePreview.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/AttachmentFileScreen.tsx
Delimited files default to preview mode in file routes. Routes load and parse their contents, then render tables through DelimitedFilePreview. The attachment screen also uses the shared table renderer.

Merge Risk: External image Minimal ยท up to c819e

No actionable merge-blocking issue was established. The mobile preview changes are ready for normal checks and device validation.

Security architecture risk: External image Low ยท up to c819e

The changes extend existing preview mechanisms without a demonstrated increase in file-access privileges. Environment-bound resources retain their identity, and inline audio requires explicit playback. Risk remains low rather than minimal because native network credential behavior and device-level navigation and sharing transitions remain unverified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred โ€” An author controlling displayed Markdown can supply supported remote audio or document destinations for user-initiated playback or opening on the viewing device. Host-file requests remain associated with the selected environment and thread or draft workspace. The inspected application paths do not demonstrate new cross-tenant or service-wide authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed โ€” Direct remote PDF preview and absolute-path file navigation were already reachable from ThreadFeed at the PR base. Their presence at the head is therefore not evidence of a newly introduced boundary bypass. Additional document formats add native-viewer reachability; the application download calls supply no explicit authorization headers, but ambient native credential behavior remains unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed โ€” The resolver preserves the distinction between direct remote sources and environment-backed resources. Captured content cannot create host-file preview resources, and captured Markdown file previews cannot navigate to live host files. These are application-level controls; complete server-side path authorization was not established by this review.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed โ€” Inline audio starts with an empty native source, serializes opening attempts, clears play intent on backgrounding and fullscreen takeover, and checks active state after asynchronous resolution. Visible players are keyed by source identity, including environment and resource fields for host-backed sources.
  • observed โ€” The new document-error fallback reuses existing download/share helpers. Those helpers isolate operations in sanitized, UUID-named cache directories and dispose failed or interrupted downloads. Successful viewer or share handoffs intentionally retain files for receivers, with cleanup of inactive directories older than 24 hours during later cache creation.

๐Ÿ“ Maintainability & Code Quality | ๐ŸŸ  Major | โšก Quick win

Fix the toggle handler: the React Compiler coverage test fails on it.

The CI "Test" job fails at lines 100-104. The React Compiler reports two unsupported constructs:

  • a try statement with a finally clause (line 100)
  • a throw statement inside try/catch (line 104)

The coverage test requires zero compiler bailouts, so the test suite stays red until toggle changes.

The fix:

  • Write the same flow as a promise chain, with no try/finally and no throw.
  • Keep these guards: active, playRequested, and AppState.
  • Keep the error, loading, and opening resets.

Keep source-code links on the file route.

When a thread contains a workspace link such as src/main.ts:42, isFile selects a document preview for the workspace path. ThreadFeed.onMarkdownLinkPress then opens FilePreviewModal before it reaches the ThreadFile route. The preview source does not carry the requested line, so the link no longer opens the source at line 42. Limit document interception to intended document types, or route links with source positions to ThreadFile first.

Keep unknown direct image embeds on the image path.

input.imageEmbed currently makes every unknown direct extension return kind: "document". Both consumers render that kind as a text link. This changes embeds such as ![chart](https://example.com/chart.php?id=1) from an image to chart.php.

Remove only the broad input.imageEmbed allowance. Recognized document and audio extensions still use their existing branches.

commit c819e025f9e6d53f0cd5373a9f10991c5f95e5eb removes the broad imageEmbed allowance, preserving unknown and extensionless remote image embeds while keeping known document/audio/video and host/workspace routing. the existing resolver and prose/list/table tests cover the regression and retained routing; 184 focused tests, mobile typecheck, and scoped lint passed in blacksmith. native rendering remains unverified because both android emulators are reserved by other sessions.

@maria-rcks The supplied code confirms that the broad input.imageEmbed allowance is removed. Unknown direct extensions now reach the media fallback, while recognized document and audio extensions retain their branches.

This addresses the finding. Native rendering remains unverified; check it when an emulator is available.

verified at merged head 144f08e21e40e96e25d13ff1e20da12f1d1ae2f1: main's apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.ts:367-368 still rejects office and unknown media-file previews with AssetPreviewTypeValidationError, and packages/shared/src/filePreview.ts has no office preview MIME types. this pr deliberately preserves main's existing ThreadFile routing for workspace office and unknown files so those links remain usable. native office viewing is a follow-up after the web stack's server support in #21362 lands; the existing office/unknown resolver cases passed in testbox.

fixed in 2803d799155c0e887562fee0b0f69932a68e7a2f: a second tap clears the pending playback request and pauses even while loading or buffering, and late source resolution cannot replace or play after cancellation. the control stays tappable and shows pause while playback is requested; existing tests cover loading cancellation, playing=false buffering, restarting, and replay after completion. blacksmith passed 177 focused tests, mobile typecheck, the targeted react compiler check, and scoped lint with 0 errors and 3 pre-existing warnings; native verification remains unverified because ios is unavailable and android emulators are serving other sessions.
