A delayed WSL localhost relay can take the port after the desktop scans it. The desktop previously accepted any successful readiness response and could send its bootstrap credential to that other server, leaving startup on an authentication error. Fixes #16826.

Each desktop backend launch now carries a fresh public desktopLaunchId. The server echoes it in its descriptor; readiness and each fresh bearer attempt in desktop main compare it before proceeding. The renderer checks the same identity for WSL secondary backends and refreshes topology when it changes. A foreign responder stops only the desktop's spawned child, then the primary or WSL backend selects another port. Explicitly pinned ports report an error and stop instead.

An early child exit waits at most one second for pending ownership resolution before choosing recovery; state-directory ownership errors retain priority. Auth retries refresh the current backend URL, launch ID and credential.

The maintainer rebuild combines readiness and ownership in one GET, handles permanent HTTP errors such as 401/404 as port collisions, and retains retries for 5xx, transport failures and slow cold boots. It removes the extra ownership-error wrapper and replaces duplicate cases with focused coverage across three existing test files. PR-added cases went from eight to seven, then to nine after review exposed early-exit and stale-config regressions. Optional wire fields preserve compatibility with older desktop bootstrap entries and non-desktop servers.

The launch ID detects accidental collisions; it is public correlation metadata, not authenticated ownership. A listener that copies the ID or replaces the endpoint between the descriptor GET and token POST remains outside this protection. Existing cached bearers continue to be reused.

Verification on headless Linux:

  • 145 tests passed across 13 focused suites. Four selected regression cases fail with main's production code and pass with this change. Persistent 401/404 collision tests also failed before the rebuild and now pass.
  • Desktop, server, web and contracts typechecks, changed-file lint and formatting passed. Independent Opus and Sol reviews completed two rounds; both found no issues on the final head.
  • A live HTTP/process harness passed four cases: HTML, wrong-ID, missing-ID, 401 and 404 listeners received zero token POSTs and stayed running while the owned child stopped; a real T3 source server echoed its launch ID and issued a bearer session using a fresh temporary T3 home and synthetic credential. Real HTTP checks also covered a child exiting before the descriptor responded and a port/launch move during auth retry. Sanitized before/after and live proof.

Not verified: packaged Electron, native Windows or macOS, the actual Windows localhost relay, WSL distro/process lifecycle, iOS or Android. The pinned-port dialog and primary/WSL pool port-policy callbacks were inspected but not driven in a real client. Manager recovery and renderer secondary bootstrap were exercised in focused tests. Screenshots do not establish this nonvisual startup behavior; the previous revision's screenshots are not claimed as current-head proof. Native platform verification and human approval remain for maintainers.

Original implementation and Windows reproduction by @SunkenInTime in #21102.

Maintainer takeover: Codex gpt-6-astra (tests), Codex gpt-6.1-sol (implementation), Claude claude-opus-5-5 and Codex gpt-6-sol (independent reviews), through T3 Code using the Codex and Claude harnesses.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes backend startup, port failover, launch-identity validation, and bootstrap-token exchange across desktop, WSL, server, and renderer paths. Because it affects authentication-sensitive behavior and has a broad runtime blast radius, human review is warranted.

Needs human approval because:

📝 Walkthrough

Desktop backend launches now carry a per-launch identifier that servers return in environment descriptors. Desktop readiness and credential exchanges validate that identifier. When a different server responds on the selected port, desktop startup can report the collision and select another port.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b80f1

The desktop app now checks the backend's launch ID before sending the bootstrap token. A server on the same port that belongs to something else is detected and the app moves to another port or reports the collision. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains. Packaged Electron, native OS and real WSL relay behavior are still unverified, as the author states.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6aeb3

The change reduces accidental bootstrap-token disclosure by checking the responding backend before signing in. The launch ID is public correlation metadata, not authentication against a malicious local relay. No introduced security regression was established, but transport behavior and some recovery interactions remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected credential boundary is the desktop's bootstrap exchange with a local or WSL backend. Exploiting the residual listener-takeover path requires control over the targeted endpoint or its routing; descriptor access alone does not redirect the desktop's requests.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A hostile listener that copies the real backend's public ID can satisfy the comparison, and endpoint replacement between descriptor GET and token POST remains possible. These are residual attack paths, not established regressions: the base sent the bootstrap credential without the added ownership gate.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Unexpected descriptor identity fails closed for fresh exchanges: desktop local auth returns a foreign-server error, and renderer secondary registration returns a transient unavailable result before invoking bootstrapRemoteBearerSession.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Persistent non-2xx readiness responses do not trigger the new foreign-identity recovery path. They remain retryable readiness failures and can strand startup while the process stays alive, but do not release a bootstrap token through onReady. The base already used the same status-filtered readiness mechanism.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If protection against hostile local listeners is required, use authenticated backend-instance binding for credential exchange rather than treating the public launch ID as that security guarantee.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, linked issue, scope, verification results, limitations, and review context. It does not use the template headings or include an explicit maintainer approval comment, but it provides the required information in a complete and relevant form.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements for directly linked issue [#16826]. Each desktop backend launch receives a fresh desktopLaunchId, and the server returns it in the environment descriptor. Readiness and each uncached bearer attempt compare the ID before credential exchange. Foreign, missing-ID, non-T3, and permanent HTTP-error responders are treated as collisions, so the desktop does not send the bootstrap credential to them. Unpinned primary and WSL backends select another port. Pinned ports report an error and stop. Tests cover collision handling, early child exit, port reassignment, auth-retry refresh, and renderer secondary bootstrap validation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the scope of [#16826]. Launch-ID propagation, descriptor and readiness checks, bearer protection, port reassignment, pinned-port errors, WSL topology validation, compatibility fields, documentation, and focused tests directly support prevention or diagnosis of the wrong-server bootstrap failure. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Handle persistent non-2xx readiness responses as port-taken.

HttpClient.filterStatusOk retries a persistent 401 or 404 until the per-probe timeout. probeReadiness then returns false, skips checkBackendOwnership, and starts another probe. No outer timeout ends this loop while the backend process remains alive. If the process exits, portTaken is still false, so the manager follows the normal restart path instead of invoking onPortTaken. Startup can remain blocked on the same port.

Pass completed non-2xx responses to ownership handling, or classify them as "foreign" before converting them to BackendReadinessTimeoutError. Then use the existing portTaken cleanup and onPortTaken flow.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 18ff53b048. Readiness now uses the ownership probe directly, so permanent HTTP errors such as 401/404 reach port-taken recovery instead of status-only polling. Persistent 401/404 tests fail before the fix and pass afterward. 5xx and transport failures remain retryable. Current-head Linux HTTP/process proof also verifies those responders receive no token POSTs.

@juliusmarminge, thanks for the fix. The updated code routes 401/404 responses through "foreign" ownership to port-taken recovery. HTTP 5xx and transport failures remain retryable. This addresses the finding.

Map 401 and 404 descriptor responses to the foreign-server error.

HttpClient.filterStatusOk rejects a descriptor response with status 401 or 404 before checkBackendOwnership can return "foreign". The wrapper then retries OwnershipCheckUnavailableError for up to 15 seconds and reports DesktopLocalEnvironmentAuthSessionBootstrapError.

For a persistent 401 or 404, bootstrapRemoteBearerSession is never reached, so no token is posted. Map these statuses to "foreign" in checkBackendOwnership. This is independent of readiness’s port-taken handling.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed through the shared ownership probe in 18ff53b048. A permanent 401/404 response is classified as foreign before status filtering can turn it into a retryable unavailable error. Local auth returns DesktopLocalEnvironmentAuthForeignServerError without posting the credential; the live HTTP proof covers both statuses. Transient 5xx retries and checks before each token retry remain covered.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. The shared probe now classifies permanent 401/404 responses as foreign before status filtering. This addresses the finding without changing transient 5xx retries or ownership checks before token retries.
