After the upgrade to 0.1.0 the V1 state.sqlite stays next to statev2.sqlite, so rolling back to a version before 0.1.0 keeps working. In #20922 that is 14.1 GiB, and nothing offered a way to remove it.

t3 doctor now reports that file and offers Delete the database from before 0.1.0. The repair is never selected for you, and --fix skips it. Its description warns that a version before 0.1.0 would then start with no threads or settings. It deletes only state.sqlite and its -wal/-shm files, through a new DatabaseMaintenance.removeLegacyDatabase. Only versions before 0.1.0 open that file, so the background service keeps running. doctor no longer stops at "Nothing to repair" when this file is the only thing left. The user guide mentions the repair.

Demo

Recorded against a copy of real data after migration 63: an 8.59 GiB statev2.sqlite with 695 MiB reclaimable, plus a 2.11 GiB state.sqlite. The demo skips compaction and runs only the new repair. Steps:

  1. --dry-run lists the repair and its warning.
  2. In the interactive prompt, the delete starts unchecked while reclaim is preselected.
  3. Opting in to only the delete removes state.sqlite and nothing else.
  4. Afterwards doctor no longer offers it.

t3 doctor: the delete starts unchecked, is opted in explicitly, and only state.sqlite is removed

Full recording (MP4)

Verification

Against a copy of real data (8.58 GiB statev2.sqlite plus a 2.15 GiB state.sqlite):

1$ t3 doctor --dry-run
2Database: 8.58 GiB, 694.9 MiB reclaimable.
3Database from before 0.1.0: 2.15 GiB, kept for rolling back.
4
5Reclaim database space (recommended)
6 Returns unused space to disk and turns on automatic shrinking.
7 Pauses the background service, if installed, while it runs and may need temporary disk space.
8
9Delete the database from before 0.1.0
10 Frees 2.15 GiB. Your threads and settings are already in the current database.
11 Warning: after this, a T3 Code version before 0.1.0 starts with no threads or settings, so you can no longer roll back.
  • --fix reclaimed 8.58 GiB β†’ 3.82 GiB and left state.sqlite in place.
  • In the interactive prompt the delete starts unchecked (☐). After ticking it, only state.sqlite was removed; statev2.sqlite stayed.
  • Tests:
    • The doctor test fails if the repair is ever recommended. Mutation-checked: flipping it to recommended fails the test.
    • The maintenance test deletes only the V1 file and its WAL.

Fixes #20922 together with #20947.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” This adds an interactive repair that permanently deletes the pre-0.1.0 database and its SQLite sidecar files, removing the ability to roll back while changing production persistence behavior. The safeguards and tests reduce accidental execution, but the irreversible data-management capability warrants human review.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

t3 doctor now offers database compaction and legacy database deletion as separate repairs. The maintenance service reports the legacy database size and can remove the legacy database and its sidecars. Deletion is not recommended by default, and --fix does not select it.

Explanation

Issue #20922 requires addressing obsolete V1 data retained in statev2.sqlite, including the unread projection_thread_activities data. The issue explicitly does not request changing the separate V1 state.sqlite rollback file. This PR only adds reporting and optional deletion for the sibling state.sqlite; it does not implement the V2-table cleanup or tests for that cleanup.

Resolution

Implement the #20922 cleanup in statev2.sqlite. Preserve the V1 tables still required by LegacyV1ThreadImporter. Remove the unread V1 tables identified by the issue, and add automated tests that verify the cleanup and retained importer data.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

For the supplied linked issue #20922, the new DatabaseMaintenance.removeLegacyDatabase operation, legacy-file inspection, doctor repair, related tests, and user-guide text change the separate rollback file state.sqlite. Issue #20922 explicitly excludes that file and focuses on obsolete data inside statev2.sqlite.

Resolution

Remove the legacy state.sqlite repair changes from this issue's scope, or link an active issue that requires this repair and assess it against that issue separately.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, behavior, demo, and verification results. It does not include the required Scope and approval section or explain maintainer approval or an applicable approval exemption.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged issue or maintainer approval with the approval comment, or explain why this focused change qualifies for an exemption. Use the template headings for Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification where applicable.

Delete the main legacy database before its WAL and SHM files.

If state.sqlite-wal is removed but state.sqlite removal fails, removeLegacyDatabase reports an error while leaving the legacy database without its WAL. A pre-0.1.0 version can still open that database for rollback, and committed transactions may be lost. This is a narrow failure path, but preserve the database until the main file is removed.

Refuse removal while an older server uses the legacy database.

An update can leave a pre-0.1.0 service running. This operation does not check whether that service has state.sqlite open before deleting its WAL and database files. Deleting a WAL while SQLite uses it can lose committed transactions or corrupt the database. Require an offline check for the legacy database before removing any file. (sqlite.org)

Fixed in 8de177c. removeLegacyDatabase now takes the same exclusive lock that compact uses on state.sqlite and holds it while deleting. If a version before 0.1.0 still has the file open, it fails with DatabaseInUseError and deletes nothing. A test covers a live connection holding the file.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the fix. The updated removeLegacyDatabase acquires the exclusive lock before deleting any files and holds it during deletion. If lock acquisition fails, deletion does not run and DatabaseInUseError propagates. This addresses the finding.
