Problem

Saved desktop connections can become unreadable on macOS and Linux when the Alpha-to-Beta product rename changes Chromium’s encryption identity.

Change

Pin the startup safeStorage name before Electron’s first startup microtask. If a saved catalog was encrypted under Beta, recover it through the existing OS-key helpers, validate the complete catalog, and rewrite it with the current safeStorage key. Recovery checks the encrypted bytes again under the save/clear lock so it cannot overwrite a newer save or resurrect a cleared catalog. Missing keys and invalid recovery data leave the file untouched.

Credit to @jeprecated for the original diagnosis and implementation in #20907. This takeover preserves the author’s commits, merges main, removes the separate resolver test file, and exercises recovery through the catalog store.

Scope and approval

Fixes #20906, with the regression diagnosis confirmed in triage. The maintainer takeover is authorized for this fix. Final approval of the encryption-identity migration remains pending; this PR is left unmerged.

Verification

Validation on head 9967a6761f:

  • 30 focused tests pass in 2 files (original: 30 in 3 files). Actual Chromium-format AES-CBC fixtures cover macOS/Linux recovery, reopening the rewritten file, invalid/wrong/missing keys, and concurrent save/clear. OS key access is mocked.
  • Fail-before proofs reproduce the rename failure, stale recovery overwrite, invalid recovered catalogs, and wrong-key decryption that passes padding but returns invalid JSON.
  • Desktop typecheck, touched-file lint and formatting pass.
  • Startup tests observe the pinned name at the first microtask, including unpackaged preview builds; Windows retains its existing path.

The pinned Electron source copies the startup app name into the macOS/Linux crypt configuration. This supports the early-name approach, but is source-level evidence rather than a packaged-app proof.

Independent full-diff review round 1 (Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol) found no blocking code defects. The existing macOS key reader is synchronous; a Keychain authorization prompt during recovery can block the main process until answered. Native verification should check that prompt behavior.

Native verification is incomplete: Electron cannot launch on this Linux machine because libgtk-3.so.0 is missing. No live Linux keyring, packaged upgrade, macOS Keychain, Windows DPAPI, Electron desktop UI, iOS, or Android verification is claimed. Native macOS/Linux upgrade verification and maintainer approval remain required before merge. Recovery requires the Beta key to remain accessible.

Implementation and test work: GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in the Codex harness; independent review: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol through T3 Code.

📝 Walkthrough

The desktop now sets a version-derived safe-storage name before startup on macOS and Linux. The catalog store can recover and re-encrypt catalogs using the previous identity when current-identity decryption or catalog validation fails. Writes and clears are serialized.

Changes: Safe-storage identity recovery

Layer / File(s)Summary
Resolve and set the safe-storage name
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopEnvironment.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopPreReadyPlatform.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopPreReadyPlatform.test.ts
The desktop resolves a safe-storage name from the update channel and sets it before startup on macOS and Linux. Tests cover name selection across platforms and application states.
Provide previous-identity decryption
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopSafeStorageIdentity.ts, apps/desktop/src/main.ts
A new service attempts Beta-key decryption for matching Chromium OSCrypt values on macOS and Linux. The catalog store layer receives this service and the Linux browser-secret dependency.
Recover catalogs and serialize updates
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopConnectionCatalogStore.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopConnectionCatalogStore.test.ts
The store validates decrypted catalog JSON and tries previous-identity recovery when current-identity decryption or validation fails. It re-encrypts recovered data only if the encrypted file is unchanged. A semaphore serializes writes and clears. Tests cover recovery, failure cases, and concurrent operations.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 44390

Existing preview website logins may be lost after upgrading on macOS or Linux. Address cookie migration or explicitly accept the required sign-ins before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 44390

Recovery is narrowly scoped and protects newer saves and clears from stale rewrites. Remaining uncertainty concerns native key compatibility and the effect of the application-wide identity change on other encrypted state and rollback.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The added recovery API accepts encrypted bytes, not caller-selected identities, keychain accounts, or paths. It operates only on macOS/Linux when the resolved identity is Alpha, and accepts only the platform-specific encrypted prefix. Its catalog caller uses the configured desktop state directory.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Historical key selectors are fixed to Beta. macOS missing or denied key access produces no recovery. Linux approval failures are not silently downgraded, and v11 decryption requires resolved keyring material. Full catalog validation and the ciphertext comparison are additional controls before a recovery rewrite.
  • observed — After Linux keyring material is available, the reused helper can retry failed v11 decryption using an empty-passphrase-derived key. Schema validation constrains the resulting document shape but does not establish cryptographic provenance. The native base decryptor's equivalent acceptance behavior was not established, so this is a compatibility-policy uncertainty rather than an established PR-introduced vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected tests cover recovery, reopening after rewrite, invalid or missing recovery material, and save/clear races while key lookup waits. They mock OS-key access and current-key writes, so they do not establish packaged native prompt, interruption, or downgrade behavior.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate a native Beta-to-pinned-identity upgrade and subsequent downgrade with both saved credentials and persistent preview cookies. Include denied key access and interruption during rewrite to establish the supported recovery and rollback outcomes.
  • proposed — Make the catalog recovery key policy explicit rather than inheriting all cookie-import compatibility behavior. Establish whether shipped safeStorage catalogs require the empty-passphrase retry before retaining or excluding it.

The description includes all required sections. It explains the problem, implementation, scope and approval status, focused verification, limitations, and required native checks. It clearly states that native verification and final approval remain pending.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #20906 requires saved catalogs to remain decryptable after the Alpha-to-Beta rename on macOS and Linux. DesktopPreReadyPlatform sets T3 Code (Alpha) before startup yields on those platforms. DesktopSafeStorageIdentity reads the Beta key through the existing Chromium key helpers. DesktopConnectionCatalogStore validates decrypted catalogs, recovers valid Beta catalogs, and rewrites them under the current key. The write lock and encrypted-byte check protect newer saves and clears. Focused tests cover macOS and Linux recovery, wrong and missing keys, invalid catalogs, reopening after rewrite, and concurrent save and clear operations.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #20906. Startup identity pinning, Beta-key recovery, catalog validation, serialized writes, dependency wiring, and focused tests directly support saved-catalog migration after the rename. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Serialize the recovery write with set and clear, or the recovery write can overwrite a newer catalog.

recoverPreviousIdentityCatalog writes recovered.value after a slow step. decryptWithPreviousName starts a secret-helper process on Linux or reads the Keychain on macOS. The PR notes that the macOS read can show an access prompt, so this step can wait for user input.

During that wait, nothing stops a concurrent set (or clear) from writing the catalog file. When the prompt resolves, writeCatalog(recovered.value) replaces the newer file with the stale recovered catalog. A connection the user just added or removed is silently lost.

Fix:

  1. Add a Semaphore to the store.
  2. Hold the semaphore for set, clear, and the recovery write.
  3. Before the recovery write, re-read the document. Skip the write if encryptedCatalog no longer matches the bytes that recovery decrypted.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @jeprecated

Fixed in 3192c554a2. set, clear and the recovery write now share a one-permit Semaphore. Recovery re-reads the document while it holds the lock, and writes only if encryptedCatalog still matches what it recovered. The new test "keeps a catalog saved while the previous key was being read" holds the previous-key lookup open, saves a newer catalog during it, and checks that the newer catalog survives. It fails without this change.

@jeprecated Thanks for the fix. The supplied code uses the same semaphore for set, clear, and recovery. Recovery re-reads the document under the lock and skips the write if the catalog changed or was cleared. This addresses the stale recovery write.

Do not change the safe-storage identity for unpackaged runs.

The catalog fallback recovers existing connection catalogs, but legacy saved-environment secrets use a separate direct decryption path. DesktopSavedEnvironments calls safeStorage.decryptString(secretBytes) without trying the Beta key. Existing unpackaged secrets written under T3 Code (Beta) can therefore fail after the unpackaged run starts under T3 Code (Alpha).

Add Beta-key recovery for saved-environment secrets.

Packaged non-nightly macOS/Linux builds previously used the Beta safe-storage identity. After this change, DesktopSavedEnvironments.getSecret still calls safeStorage.decryptString(secretBytes) directly for encryptedBearerToken records. Legacy catalog migration reaches this method through savedEnvironments.getSecret(record.environmentId), but only the connection-catalog ciphertext has a previous-name fallback. Existing packaged users can therefore lose access to saved bearer tokens during migration.

Add the same Beta-to-Alpha recovery path for saved-environment secrets, and re-encrypt recovered data under Alpha where supported. Do not solve this with an isPackaged guard; the intended packaged Alpha pin must remain.

I don't think either finding applies:

  • Beta recovery for saved-environment secrets. Nothing has written those secrets since #9917 removed DesktopSavedEnvironments.setSecret. That removal is an ancestor of 81493efb71 (v0.1.0, #20032), and every packaged macOS/Linux build before #20032 started as T3 Code (Alpha). So every legacy secret is under the Alpha key, which this PR pins again, and none were written under the Beta key. Migration from the legacy registry also runs only when connection-catalog.json is missing. A 0.1.0 install that migrated has a Beta-keyed catalog, and the store's previous-name fallback covers that.
  • isPackaged guard. Unpackaged runs also start under productName from apps/desktop/package.json, so before #20032 they used T3 Code (Alpha) as well. Skipping the pin there would leave dev builds keyed to whatever the branding says next. That is the same bug, just in dev.

@jeprecated You’re right. Both findings relied on incorrect assumptions about which identities could have written the existing data.

  • DesktopSavedEnvironments.setSecret was removed before the Beta rename. Legacy secrets therefore remain Alpha-keyed. The Alpha pin restores access to those secrets. Beta-keyed catalogs use the catalog’s previous-name fallback.
  • Unpackaged runs also need a stable safe-storage identity. An isPackaged guard would leave those runs exposed to future branding changes.

I withdraw both findings. No change is needed for either concern. Thanks for the clarification.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, DesktopSavedEnvironments.setSecret was removed in #9917 before the Beta rename in #20032 (v0.1.0, commit 81493efb71). Legacy saved-environment secrets therefore use the Alpha safe-storage key, not the Beta key. DesktopConnectionCatalogStore migrates the legacy registry only when connection-catalog.json is missing. Beta-keyed catalogs are handled by the catalog's previous-name recovery path; the rename does not require Beta-key recovery for legacy saved-environment secrets.

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, unpackaged Electron runs initially use productName from apps/desktop/package.json. The safe-storage identity pin in apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopPreReadyPlatform.ts must apply to both packaged and unpackaged macOS/Linux runs so branding changes do not change the encryption identity. Do not recommend an isPackaged guard for this pin.

Preserve Beta-keyed preview cookies before pinning the Chromium identity to Alpha.

Packaged non-nightly builds use the Beta identity. This change makes Chromium initialize with the Alpha identity instead. Existing persistent preview partitions can then fail to decrypt their Beta-encrypted cookies. Users will lose saved website logins after upgrading and must sign in again.

Add a cookie migration or recovery path, or keep the Beta identity for persistent preview sessions.

Intentional trade-off, not changing here. The Alpha safe-storage identity is the one every install used until the Beta rename (#20032, 2026-10-15). Pinning it restores months of Alpha-keyed data, and the connection catalog (the data users can't easily recreate) has explicit Beta-key recovery in DesktopSafeStorageIdentity. Preview cookies written in the ~5 days since the rename may need a fresh sign-in on those sites. That costs much less than leaving every Alpha-era cookie and catalog unreadable. A Beta cookie migration can follow separately if it's needed.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the clarification. I withdraw the requirement to migrate Beta-keyed preview cookies in this PR. Restoring Alpha-keyed data is the intended priority. The possible fresh sign-in for Beta-keyed preview cookies is an accepted trade-off, not an overlooked requirement.

Would you like a follow-up issue for Beta-keyed preview cookie recovery?

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, the Alpha safe-storage identity pin in apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopPreReadyPlatform.ts intentionally prioritizes restoring Alpha-era data after the Beta rename in #20032. DesktopSafeStorageIdentity provides explicit Beta-key recovery for connection catalogs. Preview cookies encrypted under Beta may require a fresh sign-in; this is an accepted trade-off for #20907. Beta-keyed preview cookie migration is a separate follow-up, not a requirement for this PR.

Reverted in #22219. After this merged, desktop builds could no longer decrypt the existing connection-catalog.json: the sidebar showed "No projects yet", every saved connection sat in "restarting", and the status bar read "0 of 8 updated". The server was healthy; the failure is the safe-storage identity the catalog is now decrypted with, and the Beta-only recovery path does not cover catalogs written under the current identity.

The change itself is wanted. To bring it back it needs a run on a real desktop build that already holds an encrypted catalog, on macOS and Linux, showing the app loading its existing projects and connections after the upgrade, with the captures in the PR body. Happy to re-review once that proof is there.
