When Claude starts a Workflow, the coordinator's thread opens with the workflow's raw JavaScript, 3 KB or more of export const meta = {...}, prompt templates and constants. It renders as a user bubble labelled "Sent by another agent".

Why

The SDK's task_started for a local_workflow task carries the script in prompt. The adapter wrote that prompt into the coordinator's child thread the same way it writes an ordinary subagent's brief.

Fix

The script stays in the thread (it's the only copy there) but is marked, and clients render a workflow opening in its place.

  • Contracts: an optional workflowScript boolean on the message and the user_message turn item. It's optional, so older clients still decode it and just show the old bubble.
  • Server: every new subagent prompt states it: true for a coordinator's script, false for an ordinary brief. makeSubagentConversationArtifacts passes it through.
  • Shared (packages/client-runtime subagentRuntime.ts):
    • Recognizing the script: isWorkflowScriptMessage trusts the mark when present, so a brief that happens to start with export const meta stays a brief. Only messages recorded before the mark fall back to that text check.
    • Building the opening: the parent's coordinator row already has the live workflow (name, phases, members and their states). resolveWorkflowOpening builds the opening from it with the existing deriveWorkflowGroups.
    • No extra loads: the parent thread is loaded only when the first message is a workflow script.
  • Web: WorkflowOpeningBlock replaces the script's row. It sits in the timeline like any other row, with no card around it, and nothing in it is collapsed.
    • Header: "Workflow started", the workflow name, its description and an agent tally, announced politely as it changes.
    • Agents: each phase lists its agents, drawn like the timeline's subagent rows: avatar with a status dot, the agent's answer (or its prompt while it runs) under its label, elapsed time, and a chevron that opens its thread. They stay listed after the phase finishes.
    • Script: a highlighted JavaScript code block through ChatMarkdown, with the usual copy and wrap controls. A long script folds behind "Show full script", the same rule and fade as a long message.
    • Thread Find: the name, description, phase titles and script are searchable. A match below the fold opens it.
    • Providers: the block reads them from providersIgnoringCheckedAtAtom for the thread's environment, so a provider status push doesn't re-render it. Timeline rows no longer receive them as a prop (#20854).
  • Mobile: ThreadWorkflowOpening does the same without a card: member rows reuse SubagentRow, and the script is highlighted with the work log's Shiki highlighter, showing its first 10 lines until "Show full script". The opening is part of the list's extraData, so visible rows refresh when the parent's detail arrives or member states change.
  • Older threads: threads recorded before this change get the same opening, through the export const meta check.
  • Long threads: the server's bounded thread snapshot keeps the marked script message even when it falls outside the recent window, so a coordinator thread that grows long still opens with the workflow.

Verification

  • Server: a new ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts case, "marks a workflow coordinator's script prompt and leaves a subagent brief plain", expects true on the script and false on the brief. On the base both are unset.
  • client-runtime: subagentRuntime.test.ts covers a marked thread, an old unmarked script before and after the parent loads, a brief marked false whose text looks like a script, and that ordinary subagent and top-level threads are left alone (19 pass).
  • Suites on the current head:
    • ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts: 266 pass. The one failure is the #19210 timeout, which also fails on main.
    • provider-core (193) and contracts orchestrationV2 (38) pass.
    • Typecheck shows no errors or warnings in server, contracts, provider-core, client-runtime, web and mobile.
    • Lint and format are clean on changed lines.
  • WorkflowOpeningBlock.browser.test.tsx: a short script renders as highlighted code with no fold; a long one folds and opens. The real Find highlighter finds the name with the script folded, then a word only past the fold, and the fold opens. With the reveal disabled that case fails with expected +0 to be 1. The 64 MessagesTimeline browser tests still pass.
  • threadHistoryPaging.test.ts: a bounded snapshot keeps the marked script message from outside its window, and drops a brief marked false and an unmarked message. Without the change it fails with expected [] to deeply equal [ 'message-0' ].
  • No mobile logic tests: mobile only compares a message id against the shared opening, which is covered above. Mobile has no Thread Find.
  • Live run (web): a real Claude Haiku 5.5 workflow (repo-check, one phase, two agents that each run a Bash command) on a dev server from this branch. The "before" is the same coordinator thread opened on a dev server from main with a copy of that database. Mobile was not run.

After "Show full script":

After: the whole workflow script as a highlighted JavaScript block with copy and wrap controls, followed by "Show less"

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes how existing workflow threads are persisted, reconstructed, and presented across both web and mobile, adding new phase, agent-navigation, and script-disclosure UI. The additive contract and tests reduce compatibility risk, but the cross-layer scope and default production behavior change merit human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The change marks workflow script messages, resolves workflow-opening data from thread and coordinator state, and renders matching messages as workflow openings in web and mobile thread views.

Changes: Workflow openings

Layer / File(s)Summary
Mark workflow script messages
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/subagentProjection.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
Conversation message and user turn item contracts support the optional workflowScript marker. Subagent artifact creation sets it for user messages when supplied, and workflow coordinator prompts provide that flag. The test checks that the coordinator’s user message and turn item carry the marker, while an ordinary auditor prompt is marked false.
Resolve workflow-opening data
packages/client-runtime/src/state/subagentRuntime.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/subagentRuntime.test.ts
Runtime helpers recognize workflow scripts, resolve opening data and parent thread IDs, and build headlines with agent status counts. Tests cover marked and inferred scripts, coordinator data, parent selection, and headline fallbacks.
Render workflow openings in thread views
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/WorkflowOpeningBlock.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadLineageWorkflowRow.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-workflow-opening.tsx
Web and mobile thread views pass resolved openings to message rows and replace the matching user message with a workflow-opening view. The view can show workflow phases and members, navigate to available child threads, and expand or collapse the script.

Invalidate the feed when workflowOpening changes.

When parent detail arrives or member states change without a feed update, this value changes only the renderItem closure. KeyboardAwareLegendList receives listAppearanceData as extraData, and that object does not include workflowOpening. The file notes that a changed closure alone does not invalidate visible rows. The script bubble can therefore remain visible, or the opening can show stale member states. Include workflowOpening in listAppearanceData.

Announce changes to the agent summary.

When member states change, headline.agents changes without a live region. Screen-reader users do not receive the workflow status update unless they return to this text. Put aria-live="polite" on the summary, not on the entire opening. Based on learnings: “elements conveying dynamic status updates to screen readers should use aria-live="polite" for non-urgent info.”

Do not classify a code brief as a workflow script.

If an ordinary provider-native subagent receives a brief beginning with export const meta, this fallback classifies the brief as a workflow script. Web and mobile then replace its message with a workflow opening and put the brief behind “View script.” Mark new ordinary subagent prompts with workflowScript: false, and use text recognition only when the marker is absent on older messages.

✅ Addressed in commit bfd0337

Fixed in bfd0337. The server now sets workflowScript on every new subagent prompt, true for a workflow script and false for a brief. Clients trust the mark whenever it's present and only fall back to the export const meta text check for messages recorded before the mark. A brief marked false never becomes an opening and never loads the parent. The server test now expects the brief to carry false (it got undefined before), and a new client-runtime case covers a brief whose text looks like a script.

@juliusmarminge, thanks for the fix. The client logic now respects workflowScript: false for both opening detection and parent loading. Text recognition remains available for older unmarked messages. The reported regression tests cover the original failure case.

Retain the marked workflow script in bounded projections.

A resumed provider-native workflow can add newer, unmarked user messages to the same child thread. After the bounded history excludes the original marked message, workflowOpeningParentThreadId sees the later message and does not load the parent workflow data. Both clients then omit the workflow opening.

Keep the workflow opening searchable by Thread Find.

Thread Find indexes only data-thread-find-text elements. The workflow title has no marker, and the script is unmounted while “View script” is collapsed. Searches cannot find either value in that state.

Keep the script mounted in a hidden fold, mark both searchable areas, and attach findRevealRef so selecting a script match opens “View script.”

8Update WorkflowOpeningBlock so Thread Find can index the workflow title and
9script even when “View script” is collapsed: mark both areas with
10data-thread-find-text, keep the script mounted in a hidden fold, and attach
11findRevealRef to that fold so selecting a script match opens it via scriptOpen.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 7abc45008f. The opening block replaced the script bubble, which Find could search, so this was a regression.

  • The workflow name and description are marked data-thread-find-text.
  • While find is active, the closed script stays mounted but hidden, and its findRevealRef opens "View script" once a match in it is selected. Outside find it is still left out of the page, as with folded markdown.

A new browser test runs the real Find highlighter over the block: it finds the name with the script still closed, then finds a word that only the closed script contains and opens it. On the old block the test fails with expected +0 to be 1.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for fixing this in 7abc45008f. The changes address the Thread Find regression while keeping the closed script unmounted outside Find. The browser test covers both the workflow name and selection of a match inside the closed script.

  • fix(server): a workflow coordinator's script stays in its thread's bounded snapshot670af26
  • fix(web): Thread Find reaches a workflow opening's name and collapsed script7abc450

On the outside-diff finding in review 5559755662 (keep the marked script in bounded projections): fixed in 670af26823.

The filter it names is messagesForBoundedProjection in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/threadHistoryPaging.ts, not subagentRuntime.ts. A coordinator thread that grows past the recent window dropped its first message, and with it the workflow opening. The bounded snapshot now keeps a message marked workflowScript: true wherever it sits, and a thread has at most one. A new threadHistoryPaging.test.ts case covers it; without the change it fails with expected [] to deeply equal [ 'message-0' ].
