Fixes #16455.

A pull request handoff could prepare an unrelated project, fetch its history, and run setup there. The shared server method now refuses a definite hosted repository mismatch before checkout, fetch, remote changes, worktree creation/reuse, or setup. Numbered pull request refs are fetched only from a remote naming the base repository, so a fork's own pull request with the same number cannot supply the wrong commit.

Maintainer takeover of only21mil's #20727, preserving the contributor's history and credit. This builds on the earlier guard work credited to @Absterrg0 in the original description. Main was merged without rebasing or force-pushing. The guard stays in GitManager; the VCS driver receives the selected remote. No client, contract, repository-identity, or read-routing changes are included.

Human policy decision remains: any remote whose first effective raw URL names the base or known head fork can vouch for the checkout. This supports fork clones with an arbitrarily named base remote. It also permits an unrelated checkout with an extra matching remote, including a fork remote retained after an older wrong handoff. This batch preserves that declared policy and does not claim maintainer approval or merge the PR.

Numbered refs use a matching base remote, preferring the primary. If hosted remotes exist but none names the base, no numbered PR ref is fetched, even when the primary is a local path. The old primary fallback remains only without hosted evidence, or when the PR URL cannot be classified.

Remote matching uses configured URLs before Git URL rewrites, preserves existing host/path normalization and the GitHub SSH endpoint, compares HTTP ports, and retains Forgejo installation mounts for HTTP forks. Dotless SSH aliases compare paths. An empty URL entry contributes no evidence for that remote. Local paths, no usable hosted remotes, and unreadable PR URL shapes do not establish a mismatch. Nonzero config exit status still permits stdout parsing; spawn, output-read, and timeout failures stop preparation.

Known compatibility limits remain part of the human landing decision. With no other matching remote, this guard can falsely refuse dotted SSH aliases such as github.com-work, alternate SSH hosts such as altssh.gitlab.com and altssh.bitbucket.org, mounted GitLab/Forgejo installations cloned over SSH without their HTTP mount, Azure fork checkouts, redirecting old names after a repository rename/transfer, and local mirrors retaining a hosted remote for a different fork, and HTTP host aliases. Dotless SSH aliases are compared by path, so a same-path repository behind another alias can also be accepted or selected for fetching. The remedy is to open the matching project or update its configured remote. A sole remote containing an empty URL can instead be allowed for lack of evidence. These are naming checks over trusted local Git configuration, not isolation from hostile configuration.

Verification on headless Linux:

  • Original additions: 50 cases in one existing GitManager test file → nine service-level cases in that file. All 170 main cases remain. The driver suite keeps its existing option-like remote test, with the required API argument adjustment.
  • The original eight replacement cases pass on the branch and fail meaningfully against main: early refusal, raw first/empty URLs, arbitrary option-like base remote, new/reused exact head commits, fork-only and retained-fork layouts, SSH endpoint/host, mounted Forgejo HTTP port, and config-output/failure behavior.
  • pnpm exec vp test run apps/server/src/git/GitManager.test.ts: 179/179 passed after the review fix. The earlier combined GitManager/driver run passed 168/169 driver cases; driver code is unchanged since that run. The untouched rename/unusual-path/mode/binary preview test fails on this host’s Git2.43 and reproduces against main. It is not counted as a passing suite.
  • pnpm --filter t3 typecheck, targeted lint/format check, and git diff --check pass. Lint reports two warnings on untouched main lines.

The parent reran a manual headless server-service probe after integrating the rebuild, using real GitManager/GitVcsDriver services, actual Git and local bare repositories, in-memory stores, a synthetic hosting response, and a recorded setup callback:

ScenarioObserved result
Unrelated project, local and worktree modesRefused; complete Git config, refs, worktree list and status unchanged; setup callback never invoked.
Fork as origin, base remote named --base, both holding PR64 at different commitsNew worktree reached advertised base PR head 803f360b7409c34978f8b9c0a7a946c3ed33784c, not origin’s 23b3f85ae7162fb0daa88f06c156512361925a7e.
Local-path origin plus hosted fork remoteAfter the review fix, creation and reuse reached the correct fork head; numeric PR refs were not fetched from the local primary.
Advance advertised head and reopenSame worktree refreshed to exact new head 84d6ed0af12a86514fc8db2b535dd82e55b0c0ae; setup callback invoked once for creation and once for the actual code refresh.

Integrated server proof and output. Setup was recorded at its service boundary; no user setup script was executed. This is nonvisual behavior, so the current proof is output and focused tests. The original author’s earlier browser screenshots are not presented as current-head verification.

The service is shared by web/desktop checkout and Resolve/Fix flows, mobile handoffs, and local or remote server connections. Round 1 Sol identified a local-path primary with a hosted fork remote that could still fetch an unrelated numbered PR during reuse or fallback. A separate server probe reproduced it. The fix limits the unclassified primary fallback to checkouts with no hosted remote evidence; one additional row in the existing fork-layout case covers missing-head creation and reuse. All 179 GitManager cases pass after the fix, including three fork-layout rows. Scoped server typecheck, targeted lint/format and the two refreshed server probes pass; a fresh second whole-diff round by both Sol and Opus found no code blockers. The human policy gate remains pending. Published head b12de823af has been pushed. The single scheduled status read at 23:20 UTC showed all CI jobs that ran passing and mergeability MERGEABLE; CodeRabbit remained pending. CI pending; the coordinator owns later status reads under the shared-token budget rule. Unmerged; landing is handled centrally. Native macOS, Windows, Electron, iOS, Android, real hosting, relay/tunnel behavior, and UI handoff flows have not been rerun for this revision.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR adds a production repository-identity guard that can stop pull-request checkout, fetch, worktree, and setup operations based on the checkout’s remotes. Although the change is well tested and narrowly targeted, this automatic gate materially changes an existing workflow and merits human review.

Walkthrough

Pull request preparation now checks whether configured checkout remotes match the pull request’s base or known head repository. It rejects definite mismatches and selects a matching remote for pull request ref and head-commit fetches.

Changes: Pull request checkout handling

Merge Risk: External image Low · up to adedb

Checking out a pull request into an unrelated repository is now refused before any changes are made, which is the intended fix. One gap remains: on hosts that do not publish pull-request refs, such as GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps, a checkout where origin is a fork and the base repository is another remote can still fail to materialize. This is a bounded, non-destructive failure, so it is worth fixing before or soon after merge.

Security architecture risk: External image Low · up to b12de

The change reduces wrong-repository checkout risk without adding execution privileges. Existing permissive cases and provider-specific checkout fallbacks remain, so the guard is not a complete repository-authentication boundary.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The source-supported impact scope is the selected checkout's shared remote and branch state, associated worktrees, and existing project setup execution. Pull-request references and provider metadata influence fetched content, but the inspected change adds no new credential or execution authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The identity check separates successful hosted pull-request lookup from permission to mutate the chosen checkout. Definite mismatch refusal occurs before mutation. The added tests assert unchanged configuration, refs, worktrees and status, with no fetch, checkout, reset, remote creation, or setup call on refusal; these assertions were inspected, not executed.
  • inferred — A pre-existing local-mode limitation remains: a matching fork remote can satisfy the guard while an unrelated primary remote exists. If GitHub's head-branch fetch fails and no base remote matches, its unchanged provider fallback can fetch the numbered PR ref from that primary remote before forced local checkout. This path was reachable at the merge base and is not retained as an introduced or worsened PR concern.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new fetch contract fails closed for an explicitly unavailable matching remote and preserves the Git argument terminator. Reused-worktree refresh preserves a recovery ref before a rewritten-head reset and uses merge-safe movement to reduce loss from concurrent tracked-file edits. These safeguards do not establish atomicity of the entire preparation sequence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As follow-up hardening, share repository-bound PR-ref selection with provider-driven local checkout so its fallback cannot silently use an unrelated primary remote. This would address an existing limitation rather than a newly established regression.

Explanation

The description covers the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, policy limits, verification steps, observed results, known test limitations, and unverified environments. It also explains that maintainer approval and CI completion remain pending.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #16455 requires a repository-correct handoff or a clear refusal. GitManager.preparePullRequestThread reads configured remote URLs and checks the PR base and head repositories before checkout, fetch, remote changes, worktree handling, or setup. A definite mismatch returns a clear GitManagerError that names the repository and gives a remedy. The implementation selects a matching remote for numbered PR refs. The reported 179 GitManager tests and focused server probes cover refusal, reuse, fork remotes, and state preservation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #16455. The remoteName inputs and VCS driver behavior support fetching PR refs from the verified repository remote. The tests verify this handoff behavior. No client, read-routing, repository-identity, or unrelated product changes are present in the reviewed change summary.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the selected pullRequestRemote in the branch-name fallback.

The refs/pull/<n>/head fetch now uses pullRequestRemote. This value names the remote for the pull request's base repository, and the primary remote is preferred when it matches. The fallback at lines 1068-1093 still calls gitCore.resolvePrimaryRemoteName(cwd). It also compares only that remote with pullRequestRepositoryKey(pullRequest.url).

A common layout triggers the problem:

  • origin is the user's fork.
  • upstream is the base repository.
  • The host publishes no refs/pull/<n>/head, for example GitLab, Bitbucket, or Azure DevOps.
  • The pull request is a same-repository request.

In this layout the repository guard passes, because upstream names the base repository, so pullRequestRemote is upstream. The pull-ref fetch fails. The fallback then compares origin with the base key and rethrows. The outer retry in materializePullRequestHeadBranch repeats the same failing pull-ref fetch. The handoff then fails with GitPullRequestMaterializationError, even though upstream holds the head branch.

pullRequestRefRemote already checks that the selected remote names the base repository. The fallback can therefore fetch the branch by name from pullRequestRemote directly.

There is one case to check before you apply this diff. When no hosted remote exists, pullRequestRefRemote returns the primary remote without checking its repository identity. To keep the old identity check for that case, keep the URL comparison and apply it to pullRequestRemote.
