Problem

On macOS, the terminal sends every Option+key as Alt. On layouts that put ASCII characters on the Option layer (German, Swedish, Finnish, Croatian and others), those characters never appear: German Option+L (@) reaches the shell as ESC @, and | [ ] { } \ ~ € are lost the same way (#13046). Browsers report Option as Alt, never AltGraph, so the existing AltGr bypass doesn't apply. The vendored libghostty-vt only honours macos-option-as-alt in macOS builds, and ours is a WASM build.

Change

  • Default: on macOS, Option on its own (without Ctrl or Cmd) that produces a single character no longer goes through the encoder. The browser types it through the same text-field path AltGr already uses. Option dead keys (German Option+N for ~) compose the same way. App keybindings still get the key first, so Option+←/→ word motion is unchanged. An Option+Space that types a non-breaking space stays encoded so one can't end up in a command; a layout whose Option+Space types a regular space types it.
  • Setting: "Option as Alt in terminal" (Off / Left Option / Right Option / Both), shown only on macOS and modelled on Ghostty's macos-option-as-alt. It keeps Option+B/F as Alt for anyone who relies on that. Left and Right are tracked from each Option key's own keydown and keyup.
  • Docs: one paragraph in docs/user/terminal.md.

Screenshots

Before: Settings has no such row. After: the new macOS-only setting in Settings → General → Behavior, with its options open:

Option as Alt in terminal setting with Off, Left Option, Right Option and Both

The ⓘ next to the title explains what Off does, with examples:

Info hover: When off, Option types the character your keyboard layout puts on that key, for example Option+L types @ on a German keyboard

Scope and approval

This addresses the triaged #13046. Julius's root-cause comment describes this fix ("treating a lone Option that produced a printable character as composing input… which is Terminal.app with 'Use Option as Meta key' off") and points out that Option+letter Alt chords would change. The setting is there so that change isn't a regression for people who use those chords. It's one problem: how macOS Option reaches the terminal.

Verification

  • vp test run src/terminal/ghostty/surface.test.ts src/components/settings/settingsSearch.test.ts src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.restore.test.tsx (in apps/web): 150 passed. They cover macOS vs. other platforms, Ctrl/Cmd chords, arrows, dead keys, Option+Space, each setting value, and an Option side that was never seen.
  • vp test run src/settings.test.ts (in packages/contracts): 168 passed.
  • apps/web typecheck passes; lint on the changed files reports no new warnings.
  • Manual, macOS with a Finnish keyboard, in the desktop dev build, Chrome and Safari (web dev build): @ { } [ ] | \ and other Option-layer characters type correctly with the setting Off. Left Option, Right Option and Both each send Alt only for the chosen side, and switching back to Off restores typing. Option+←/→, Ctrl+C and Cmd+V behave as before.
  • Known limitation, also on main: in Safari with Option as Alt, Option+B sends › instead of ESC b, because Safari doesn't expose the keyboard layout map. Chrome and the desktop app send ESC b.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the default macOS terminal handling of Option for existing users and adds a persisted, user-facing setting with new keyboard event-state logic. The targeted tests and backward-compatible schema addition reduce risk but do not remove the need for human review of the changed product default.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7f8b0

Safari users who select Option as Alt may get the layout character › instead of the Option+B shell shortcut when a terminal application uses Kitty associated-text mode. This is a limited browser-specific issue; the PR is mergeable with that limitation tracked.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7f8b0

The change remains within local keyboard interpretation and existing terminal input channels. No expanded permissions or session access were identified. Residual uncertainty concerns browser-specific composition and focus recovery, and consistent application of the preference across terminal consumers.

Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective exposure is changed interpretation of local macOS keystrokes in thread terminals and the provider sign-in terminal. Inspected wiring retains the existing terminal/session destinations and provider-response callback; it does not establish additional credential, tenant or service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The changed source is local keyboard input, and the sink remains the same terminal-data callback already used by ordinary typing and composition. The PR changes bytes delivered for qualifying gestures, but the inspected path does not introduce a new remote input source or identity transition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Suppression uses a per-surface set, making repeated additions idempotent. Matching keyup consumes suppression without rereading the setting, while an encoded keydown clears an old entry. Blur resets held Option sides, and disposal removes listeners and clears the composition timer. Browser-specific recovery remains unverified.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude the physical Space key from composed-text routing.

When Option+Space reports event.key === " ", isTerminalOptionComposedText returns true, so the event bypasses terminal encoding. Check event.code === "Space" before routing the event to the textarea, and test both space key values.

Intentional. Only the non-breaking space is kept on the encoder, since it silently breaks commands. A layout whose Option+Space types a regular space should type it, and anyone who wants Alt+Space can set Option as Alt. Clarified the comment and added a test in 7f8b04a1c.

@jcxplorer Thanks for clarifying. My suggestion would block intentional regular-space input, so I withdraw it. Only non-breaking space should stay on the encoder; the “Option as Alt” setting controls Alt+Space behavior.

Apply the Option-as-Alt mode to the key encoder.

When Safari reports Option+B with event.key === "›", the selected Option-as-Alt setting forwards the event to GhosttyTerminalCore.encodeKey. That method resets macos_option_as_alt to false and passes › as associated text. In Kitty associated-text mode, the encoder can send › instead of a pure Alt+B shortcut. Keep Safari’s layout text, but configure libghostty with the selected Option-as-Alt mode.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding "Apply the Option-as-Alt mode to the key encoder" (surface.ts:1098-1108): this won't have an effect. libghostty only reads macos_option_as_alt in macOS builds (comptime builtin.os.tag == .macos), and the web terminal uses the WASM build. Safari's Option+B sending › in Alt mode comes from Safari not exposing the keyboard layout map, also happens on main, and is listed as a known limitation in the description. Fixing it would mean guessing base keys from physical positions, which is a separate change from this PR.

@jcxplorer You’re right. I withdraw “Apply the Option-as-Alt mode to the key encoder.”

I checked the pinned libghostty source. Its macos_option_as_alt behavior is behind native macOS/Darwin compile-time checks. The web terminal targets wasm32-freestanding, so passing that setting to the encoder would have no effect.

The adapter also falls back to event.key when keyboard-layout data is unavailable. Safari’s documented Option+B limitation is separate from this PR. No encoder change is needed here.

Thanks for the clarification. Would you like a follow-up issue for the Safari limitation?

5Learning: In pingdotgg/t3code, apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.ts implements browser-side Option-as-Alt routing. The web terminal builds libghostty for wasm32-freestanding through apps/web/scripts/build-libghostty-wasm.sh. At pinned libghostty revision 9f62873bf195e4d8a762d768a1405a5f2f7b1697, macos_option_as_alt affects encoding only behind native macOS/Darwin compile-time checks; setting this encoder option does not change WASM behavior. apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/keyCodes.ts falls back to event.key when navigator.keyboard.getLayoutMap is unavailable. The author identifies Safari sending › for Option+B in Alt mode as an existing main-branch limitation documented in PR #19833. A physical-key fallback is a separate change, not a missing encoder-setting update in that PR.

Thanks for this. I'm closing it as part of PR triage. Right now we're only taking focused bug fixes from outside contributors (see Read this first), and this PR is not one.

From the review: The macOS Option character bug remains, but this patch adds a persisted four-way setting and changes shell shortcut defaults. Those behavior choices need maintainer agreement first.

If you think this was a mistake, message me on Twitter at @maria_rcks and I'll take another look.
