Users with large, older databases have no way to learn that t3 doctor (#19436) can shrink them.

The new server.getDatabaseStorage subscription reports database size, reclaimable bytes, whether incremental auto-vacuum is on, and the exact command to run. It republishes after each compaction or reclaim pass, and only when the status changed. When an unconverted database has at least 1 GiB to reclaim:

  • Web and desktop: Settings › Storage shows a dismissible notice with a Copy command button.
  • Mobile: Settings › Maintenance shows the same notice.

The command targets that environment's data directory. It uses the desktop CLI launcher when t3 isn't on PATH, and PowerShell quoting on Windows. A dev server using a separate dev database shows no notice, so the command can never target the live install.

Evidence

Captured against a copy of real data in a worktree sandbox, with 1.2–2.7 GiB of freed pages and auto-vacuum off.

Web: Settings › Storage, before t3 doctorAfter t3 doctor (fresh browser, nothing dismissed)
Storage settings showing the Reclaim 2.7 GiB notice with Copy command and DismissStorage settings with no Database section after doctor

t3 doctor --fix on that copy: Done: 3.61 GiB -> 887.6 MiB, 0 superseded events removed.

Takes over #19249.

The new status stream and doctor-command safety gate have no focused test: the existing test only checks reclaim. Could you add service-layer tests asserting the published page counts/command for a production-style database path, no status for a dev path, and updated status after maintenance? This backend behavior needs coverage. The fix spans test setup and assertions, so no single-hunk suggestion applies.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Added in 6423026: DatabaseStorage.test.ts covers the published status and doctor command for a userdata path, the republished status after a reclaim pass, and no status for a dev path.

📝 Walkthrough

The server now streams database size, reclaimable space, incremental-vacuum status, and a host compaction command. Web and mobile settings display notices for supported environments when compaction is recommended. The notices support copying the command and dismissing the notice.

Compose the settings notice with ComposerBanner slots.

The settings section is not an exception to the web UI composition rule. Keep SettingsSection as the settings container, but render the notice content and actions with ComposerBanner slots instead of SettingsGroup and SettingsRow. This is a composition refactor, not a major behavioral defect.

Escape PowerShell smart quotation marks.

If config.baseDir contains “ or ”, powershellWord places those characters inside a quoted argument without escaping them. PowerShell also interprets smart quotation marks as quotation marks, so the copied doctor --base-dir command can pass the wrong path or fail. Escape those characters and add a Windows path test. Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces a new cross-platform database-storage reporting and maintenance-notice workflow, including a new authenticated RPC and periodic server-side inspection. It also enables the capability by default and changes authorization code, so the runtime and access-control implications warrant human review.

Composable components: this new notice hand-builds its actions instead of using ComposerBanner.Actions and the other ComposerBanner slots. Consider composing the notice with those slots inside SettingsSection.

Posted via Macroscope — UI Consistency

Not applying: ComposerBanner is the chat composer's banner and no settings surface uses it. This notice is a SettingsRow inside SettingsSection, and a multi-button control is wrapped the same way as other settings rows (e.g. ProjectActionsSettings.tsx, KeybindingsSettings.tsx).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make the Linux-platform assertion independent of the test host.

On Windows, shim is a Windows path. shellWord quotes its backslashes, but this assertion expects the unquoted ${shim} prefix. The test fails on Windows even when command rendering is correct. Assert the POSIX-quoted argument separately, or account for the host-dependent shim path.

Accept the Windows command’s quoted argument.

On Windows, resolveHostCliCommand renders doctor "--base-dir", so this assertion fails even when the status contains the correct command. Check doctor and --base-dir separately, or use a platform-specific expectation. PowerShell permits the quoted argument. (learn.microsoft.com)
