fix(gitlab): identify offline remotes from local config#19397
Unknown self-hosted GitLab remotes were identified through a network-dependent authentication probe. When the host was offline or behind a disconnected VPN, provider discovery could wait for that probe even though glab already knew the host locally.
The GitLab adapter now first reads glab config get api_host --host <remote-host> during unknown-remote refinement. It preserves the remote host spelling for glab's case-sensitive configuration keys and accepts only matching normalized host/origin output, including the port. Failed config reads stay retryable. A successful lookup that does not match falls back to the existing host-scoped authentication probe, preserving token-based logins without api_host and separate API host/port configurations. Matching local configuration identifies the integration without validating its token. Ordinary authentication still uses glab auth status.
This retains @Exotic209093’s original contribution and commits, with current main merged. The shared discovery hook is already on main, so its obsolete hunks and duplicate resolver tests were removed. Fixes #17209.
Verification on headless Linux, Node 24:
- 66 → 63 focused tests across 5 → 4 files, all 63 passing on the revised implementation. The merged baseline had four stale-test failures against main's current callback, host casing and command shape. The PR-only core test file was removed; registry integration now covers actual routing, exact host keys, ports, rejected config and retry/cache behavior. Existing ordinary-authentication and Forgejo coverage remains. Token-login and separate API-endpoint regressions failed against the earlier candidates and pass with the compatibility fallback.
- Restoring main's production implementation makes the offline registry regression fail; restoring the fix makes it pass. Production bytes were restored exactly.
- Scoped GitLab/server typechecks, lint, formatting and diff checks passed. No repository-wide checks ran locally.
- A real Ubuntu glab 1.36.0 binary was extracted into temporary state and run in a network-disabled namespace with synthetic configuration. Syscall tracing showed:
| Command / configuration | Result | Connection/send attempts |
|---|---|---|
| Local config, exact mixed-case host and port | Matching host, exit 0 | 0 |
| Local config, wrong host casing | Empty output, exit 0 | 0 |
| Local config, unconfigured host | Empty output, exit 0 | 0 |
| Authentication probe control | Reported unreachable network | Greater than 0 |
The local per-host lookup follows the glab config documentation. The isolated CLI experiment and production registry tests provide nonvisual proof; no client UI changed.
A second real-glab experiment used a synthetic token login without api_host and a loopback HTTP user fixture: the local config read was empty and the authentication fallback read the synthetic account. The production managed discovery service was also run with the real CLI: matching config selected GitLab after one local command; empty config and a separate API hostname/port both selected GitLab after the host-specific auth fallback against that fixture. This does not validate real credentials.
The original VPN/keyring-backed account, modern glab releases, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and Electron desktop were not exercised here. Hosts without matching api_host retain main’s network-dependent authentication check. The offline improvement applies when the local value matches the remote host; it does not promise offline detection for separate API endpoints.
Review found token-login and separate-API-endpoint compatibility regressions. Both are fixed. Opus and Sol independently reviewed the full diff in three rounds; the final round found no code blockers and both reviewers passed all 63 tests. Reviewed/published head: 21e18ba60e. Latest-head CI is blocked: build/typecheck, lint, package tests and all eight server shards passed, but CI attempt 2 repeats a failure in WorkflowOpeningBlock.browser.test.tsx:103 (8047/8048 web tests pass). The unchanged web tree, shared client trees, lockfile and workflows match merged main exactly. A fresh test agent ran that browser suite alone: 3/3 passed. Lazy highlighter/Suspense readiness exceeding the assertion’s one-second deadline is the likely cause; precise CI timing is unproven. No web code or checks were changed. This PR remains blocked until the web CI gate is resolved.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e6ad4
The offline lookup identifies a remote only when its effective GitLab API host matches. No issue identified here needs to be resolved before merging.
Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cc7ca
The lookup remains tied to the selected remote’s host, and normal authentication checks remain separate. No security regression was demonstrated. Remaining uncertainty concerns how the real CLI selects credentials and hosts for subsequent operations when local configuration exists without valid authentication.
Retained concerns No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The changed decision affects repositories whose selected remote is unknown and whose host has a successful nonempty glab user-config lookup. It can make existing GitLab operations reachable for additional locally configured hosts, but does not itself grant permissions at a GitLab service.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The remote influences a host argument to a fixed glab config command. That host is passed as a distinct argument, and returned config text is used only as a nonempty classification signal. The supplied tests assert lowercasing and preservation of an explicit HTTPS port.
- observed — Subsequent MR-list and repository-API operations pass cwd without an explicit hostname. This behavior predates the PR. Repository source therefore does not settle which host and credentials glab selects for newly classified config-only contexts; credential redirection is not established.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Validate the classification-to-operation handoff with a real glab installation using multiple configured hosts, a username without a valid token, and host-selection environment overrides. Confirm that subsequent operations target the intended host or fail without using another host’s credentials.

GitLab CLI glab config get user --host fallback $USER v1.92.0 issue 8237
💡 Result:
| 1 | **Issue #8237** reports that in **glab v1.90.0**, `glab config get user --host <host>` could return the machine’s `$USER` environment variable instead of the host-specific `user` value. The issue says the fix was merged and the bug was resolved in **glab v1.92.0**: `user` is mapped to `GLAB_USER`, preventing `$USER` from shadowing the host setting. | 2 | |
| 3 | So if you’re seeing this on v1.92.0, the issue itself doesn’t establish why; it may be worth checking the exact command and configuration. By default, `glab config get` checks environment variables before config files, while `--host` selects a per-host setting. Require host-specific evidence before refining the remote.
glab versions before v1.92.0 can return $USER for glab config get user --host. This code treats any successful, non-empty stdout as proof that the requested host is GitLab. The discovery flow does not enforce a minimum glab version, so an unrelated remote can be misclassified when an older glab version is installed. Gate this refinement on glab v1.92.0 or later, or use an offline check that proves the requested host has its own configuration entry.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @Exotic209093
Verified against glab #8237 and historical config/login source. A version gate alone would still allow GLAB_USER overrides. The follow-up instead reads api_host locally and requires its normalized host to match the selected remote. This keeps one offline probe and rejects nonempty unrelated/global/legacy username values. Added mismatched-host and legacy-output regressions; all 57 focused tests pass. Manual entries missing api_host remain conservatively unknown, documented in the PR.
@Exotic209093 Thanks for the clarification and fix. The supplied code now reads api_host and requires its normalized host to match the selected remote. This addresses the finding without a version gate or a network probe.
Leaving manual entries without api_host unknown is a conservative fallback.

| 5 | Learning: In packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabSourceControlProvider.ts, a glab version gate alone does not make `config get user --host` host-specific evidence because GLAB_USER can override the value. Unknown-remote discovery uses one offline `config get api_host --host` probe and requires a successful result whose normalized host matches the selected remote. Manual configuration entries without api_host remain unknown by design. |

Pushed the maintainer takeover as 21e18ba60e, preserving the original commits and merging main. Thanks @Exotic209093 for the local host-config approach.
The final change uses matching config as an offline fast path and keeps the old host-specific authentication probe for missing or different API endpoints. This preserves token-only logins and split API host/port setups, two compatibility regressions found and fixed during three independent Opus/Sol review rounds. Final reviews found no blockers; 63 focused tests pass, down from 66.
The body now includes real glab offline syscall proof and production discovery service runs for all three paths. @Exotic209093, confirmation with the original VPN/keyring setup would still be useful; no such account was available here. CI is pending on this head. Unmerged.
CI remains blocked after one failed-job retry: attempt 2 failed only the inherited short-script highlighting assertion at WorkflowOpeningBlock.browser.test.tsx:103 (8047/8048 web tests passed). Build/typecheck, lint, package tests and all eight server shards passed.
Fresh independent diagnosis found the full web tree, shared client trees, lockfile and workflows identical to merged main; the isolated unchanged browser suite passed 3/3 locally. A one-second assertion deadline around lazy Shiki/Suspense rendering is a likely timing cause, not yet proven in CI. No GitLab change is indicated, and checks remain intact. The body records this blocker on 21e18ba60e. Handing back unmerged with the web CI gate outstanding.
