Pi text generation can offer a model registered by an extension, then fail to load it because background generation intentionally disables extensions. A rejected set_model now names the requested model, retains Pi’s bounded rejection reason, and explains --no-extensions with alternatives. Transport failures keep their existing handling.

Maintainer takeover of #19070, preserving @ScottN-PV’s diagnosis and original commits. Addresses the error-message portion of #19053; filtering extension-only models from the picker remains a separate design decision. The rebuild removes test-only launch-argument tracking and retains one rejection regression alongside the existing success test.

Verification on headless Linux:

  • textGeneration.test.ts: original PR 2 → rebuilt 2 tests; both pass. Replacing production code with current main makes the rejection regression fail with “Pi text generation failed.” Restoring the fix passes again.
  • Provider-pi typecheck and touched-file lint pass.
  • Headless subprocess proof uses the real Pi RPC transport and process spawner with a protocol stand-in that rejects set_model; no real Pi executable or account is available here. Before/after output below is from the actual base/head implementation.
text
1before TextGenerationError: Text generation failed in generateCommitMessage: Pi text generation failed.
2after TextGenerationError: Text generation failed in generateCommitMessage: Pi rejected model 'demo/demo-model': Model not found: demo/demo-model. If the model comes from a Pi extension or package, text generation cannot use it because it runs Pi with --no-extensions. Pick a built-in Pi model or one defined in Pi's models.json.

Review: Two full-diff independent rounds with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol. Round 1 had no blockers; a wording nit about custom Pi data directories was fixed. Round 2 found no code findings. Current-head CI must pass before merge.

Not verified: a real extension-registered Pi model, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, or packaged Electron desktop. No client layout or visuals changed; proof is at the server error boundary.

Model/harness: resumed with GPT-6-Astra (tests), GPT-6.1-Sol (implementation), Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol (independent reviews), through Codex/Claude in T3 Code. Prior saved rebuild by Claude Fable 5.1 via Claude Code.

📝 Walkthrough

The Pi provider now maps set_model RPC failures to a TextGenerationError with model details, Pi’s error, and --no-extensions guidance. Tests verify the error and confirm that no prompt is sent.

Changes: Pi model-setting error handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Map and test model-setting errors
packages/provider-pi/src/server/textGeneration.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/textGeneration.test.ts
The provider converts tagged set_model failures to TextGenerationError and preserves the original error as cause. Other errors continue to propagate unchanged. The fake Pi process can simulate a model-setting failure. The test checks the model name, Pi’s error, --no-extensions, and that no prompt is sent.

Model rejection guidance is improved, but unusually long model names can still produce oversized error details. Bound the displayed name before merging or accept this limited risk.

Bound the model name in the rejected-model detail.

parsePiModelSlug accepts long provider/model strings without a length limit. A rejected set_model request can therefore copy the full model name into TextGenerationError.detail. Keep the full value in the request, but truncate only the displayed value.

Not changing this. The model slug is the user's own selected model, and the format error a few lines above already echoes it unbounded. Truncating only this message would hide the exact value the user needs to fix their selection, and there is no correctness or security impact.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for clarifying. Keeping the exact selected model slug is useful for diagnosis and consistent with the format error above. I did not establish a correctness or security issue that requires truncation. I withdraw this finding.

5Learning: In packages/provider-pi/src/server/textGeneration.ts, preserve the full user-selected model slug in diagnostic errors. Both the provider/model format error and the set_model rejection error intentionally show the exact value so users can diagnose their selection. Do not require truncation without a concrete correctness or security impact.
